Know Your Rights! Public Holiday Entitlements A word from the man in charge...

The weekly round up... Welcome to another edition of Career Talk.

OCTOBER 2014 marks Careers Month for all campuses and with it brings many different careers related events! See inside for details of Master classes and the Auckland Careers Fair. Well done to Waikato for their successful Careers Fair —with a number of students into work as a result.

For Auckland students you'll want an up-to-date CV so you can apply for roles when you meet our employer partners at the NZMA Careers Fair - ask your Careers team for help if you need it! Visit our website for more information about NZMA Ca-reers and what we can do to help you with your job search.

Also inside, we look at the events and activities that have been occurring around our campuses. Auckland South Campus volunteers time for a CureKids event at Accor, looks a Halloween dis-plays for Retail and ways to budget in Hospo class.

A big congratulations to SPC’s Kapa Haka group who performed this week—we’ll see photos soon!!!

Enjoy!...

Many thanks to Sai Hamsala, award-winning bartender and NZMA graduate, for visiting

our Sylvia Park and Auckland South campuses as part of NZMA Careers Month.

Sai Hamsala completed his Diploma in Hospitality Management with us at NZMA back in

2009 and he began as a Food & Beverage Attendant at Hilton Hotel. He was promoted to

bartender and is then Bar Manager of Bellini at the Hilton Hotel in Auckland City. He has

competed in the NZ Bar Masters at the Restaurant & Bar Trade Show and is the recipient

of the Bartender of the Year award at the NZ Culinary Fare 2013. He has built a solid rep-

utation and very successful career within the hospitality industry.

If you want to try out one of his cocktails, you can find him at Scarlett Slimms & Lucky in

Mt Eden where he's the bar manager.

The inaugural Waikato Career Fair was a huge success!!!

On the day, at least 8 students were offered jobs and many eyes were opened to future

opportunities and aspirations. The employers were impressed with the hospitality given

by the Waikato campus and the level of students presented.

Thank you to all Waikato staff for supporting students, running the competitions and

generally being amazing!

Thank you to the student ambassadors who were a tribute to their tutors and represented NZMA with pride. The employers were overwhelmed with the services you offered them. And of course thank you to all the students that attended and made the most of the day!!

Know Your Rights

As Halloween draws nearer, the retail team at ASC have embraced the festiv-

ities and transformed Retail Therapy into a haunting (but still inviting) shop-

ping haven for students and staff.

Merchandising is a key part of retail, and using the window and store space

effectively is a key lesson for our retail students, in order for them to market

their goods.

Coming of a Spring Fiesta theme for September, Octobers Halloween theme

is primed and ready to go! So if you’re around ASC, pop in to Retail Therapy

and say hi to the wonderful team … and be wowed by their great customer

service if you choose to buy something!

The ASC Hospo team have taken a different and fun approach to their budgeting skills. Sharon (tutor) has encouraged her students to learn budgeting in a more practical manner — through organising a High Tea for their families. A fixed amount was used by the students to plan for the event. Students had to plan the menu, then the shopping list, shop for the items, prepare / cook the food, then set the venue up and then serve the guests. Nerves were felt by some students but the experience was enjoyed by all. The guests had a great time and felt very spoilt and special.
