• A bachelor's degree in urban and regional planning, geography, architecture, engineering or a related discipline is required
• A master's degree in one of these disciplines may be required
• Membership in the Canadian Institute of Planners is usually required

• Internship or shadowing day (e.g. bring your kind to work day)- see how people in urban planning deal with different needs, create ideas, presentations, reports and meeting deadlines.
• Tours- to tour different cultural history museums (e.g. the ROM)

Work Environment
• Urban planners work for the government or for consulting companies.
• Most of their work is done in an office environment using computers, phones, and possibly sketching materials.
• Visit and examine the areas of land and neighbourhoods they are working with, travelling on site.
• A planner's work is often done in cooperation with a team of other community experts and officials.
• Hours are full time during the week,
• Meetings and extra work are sometimes done on evenings and weekends.

• Prepare land development plans for roads, parks and other land uses
