Autumn 2014

It was a pleasure to welcome respected industry professionals on campus at IMI University Centre for our 2014 Autumn Career Days. Many thanks for the industry knowledge and information passed on to our students during the Career Days. Apart from allowing students to secure internships, management trainings and jobs, the Career Days are an excellent platform to complement the academic programmes at IMI by incorporating the industry perspective. Guest lecturers from the industry as well as site visits also increase the exposure our students can get during their studies.

Representatives from Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts visited IMI to deliver two sessions to students. In the morning session, Mr. Alex Rawson , Vice President Talent Development and Mr. Christian Krug , Learning & Quality Manager – both from the Zürich Head Office – were guest speakers on the Personal Development Programme for BA Degree students and they provided invaluable advice to students about their CVs and cover letters, to be better prepared for their employment applications.

We were happy to welcome guest speaker Ms. Birgitta Scharnberg, who is Executive Housekeeper at Hotel Astoria in Luzern. Ms. Scharnberg spoke to our Certificate students about her career and the different options they may have as they progress with their careers in hospitality.

IMI was happy to welcome representatives from three American 5-star hotels. Mr. Thomas Riveyran from Placement International brought with him Mr. David Smiley from The Inn at Palmetto Bluff, Ms. Rachel Monroe from Hotel Jerome, and Mr. Allen Highfield from Montage Deer Valley. Our students learned of the many exciting opportunities awaiting them in the United States. Interviews were held following the presentation.

A group of IMI students had the opportunity to visit two very different Kempinski properties: Grand Hotel Kempinski, on the lakefront in Geneva, and Le Mirador Kempinski, which overlooks Lake Geneva from a height of approximately 800 metres.

The group was given a guided tour of the properties, followed by drinks and question-and-answer sessions with Mr. Matthias Bernard, Resident Manager in Geneva and Mr. Olivier Vernet, Assistant Manager at Le Mirador. Some students also had the opportunity to interview for positions during the visits.

The Chedi Andermatt Career Day was held at the hotel this year. Ms. Cindy Conrad, the Director of Human Resources, gave our students a tour of the property. Afterwards the students were able to interview for internship positions in various departments.

White Lodging USA

IMI was pleased to welcome representatives from White Lodging USA on campus. Ms. Cara Dougherty , Talent Acquisition Project Manager, and Ms. Sylvia Choi , Director of Human Resources at Courtyard/Residence Inn by Marriott Austin Downtown, presented on a variety of internship opportunities available in the USA. Interviews were held following the presentation, with positive reports coming from our guests and many students securing 12-month training positions in the USA.

Ms. Frederique Hounkpatin , Cluster Learning and Development Manager at Hilton Worldwide and Ms. Anja Fuchs , Resourcing Coordinator for the Hilton Group in Ras Al Khaimah visited our campus to deliver a presentation on Hilton brands in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE. Students also had the opportunity to interview for internships and jobs.

Mr. Paul Fletcher , from Fletcher Recruitment, was warmly welcomed to our campus. He gave a presentation on the work permit and visa process for the UK. Mr. Fletcher also sat down with our students to discuss the many possible opportunities at properties throughout the UK.

We were happy to see Mr. Christian Hoffmann , Human Resources Manager Europe from the FRHI Head Office in Zürich and Ms. Ella Potalivo , Recruiter and Trainer from Fairmont Le Montreux Palace. They delivered a presentation on the Fairmont, Raffles and Swissôtel brands and the opportunities available within them. Several of our students were selected for interviews for the Leadership Development Programme, with positive feedback coming from the guests.

We were happy to host once again Mr. Thomas Riveyran , from Placement International. We hosted Ms. Erin Pacol from WISE, a sponsorship company for the American J-1 Visa. In a highly entertaining presentation, Ms. Pacol explained the J-1 Visa process and was on hand to answer any questions the students had.

We were thrilled to host Hyatt Europe, Middle East and Asia, as well as Hyatt USA. Ms. We had an energetic early morning presentation from Ms. Katrin Melle , Ms. Vida Chow, Mr. Alex Chiang, Ms. Brooklynn Luedke, Ms. Christine Flaschner, and Mr. Ash Desai. Mr. Sayed Haggag presented the Marriott brand, with special attention paid to opportunities in the Middle East and Africa region. After the presentation, students interviewed for opportunites in the region.

We were happy to welcome Mr. Tijs Klerx , Hotel Manager at Viceroy Miami, as well as Ms. Kelly van Woezik and Ms. Inka Diddens , HR Consultants at HRC. Mr. Klerx shared his experiences working his way up from being a J-1 trainee to several years later, a Hotel Manager. Afterwards our students learned about many worldwide opportunities through HRC International.
