nections between different, but related careers, known as “career clusters.” Using the site’s Re-

interests,strengthsandskills,andrecognizethatsimilartypesofcareersmayrequiredifferent

levels of education.

ing life. As adults move from job to job and career to career, it’s helpful to be able to look at

abroaderpicture–identifyingtransferableskillsandinterests.Consideringclustersofrelated

careersisonewayofmakingthesearcheasier.

Careerresourcesareoftenorganizedaroundcareerclusters–broadgroupsofrelatedcareers

withinanoccupationalinterestarea.CFWV.comisonesuchresource.Byorganizingcareers

intocategoriessuchasArts&Humanities,Business&Marketing,HealthScience,etc.,theCareer

Clustersnavigationtoolenablesstudents toexplorehowasingle industryor interestencom-

passesawidevarietyofverydifferentcareerpaths.Inparticular,careerclustershelpstudents

recognizethattherearemanypotentialopportunitieswithinanygivenindustry,andthateven

iftheydon’tpossesstheskillstheybelievearerequiredtoworkatonespecificjob,theremay

be alternatives.

thatreallyinterestyou.Yourresearchhasincludedreadingjobdescriptionsandeduca-tion requirements, researching whether opportunities in the careers are growing or not, andlearningaboutworkingconditionsandearnings.Atthispoint,youmayhavediscov-eredsomethingsaboutoneormoreofthecareersthatarecausingyoutowonderiftheyareindeedasgoodofafitasyouhadhoped.Ifthissoundslikeyou,don’tworry!Sometimesaninterestinonecareercanleadyoutomanysimilarcareersthatforonereasonoranothermakeforabetterfit.AgroupofrelatedcareersiscalledaCareer Cluster.

SAY SOMETHING LIKE: Discovering careers that are similar to a career that inter-estsyouislikeuncoveringaburiedtreasure!Letmeshowyouwhy.Supposeyouareinterestedincarpentrybecauseyoureallyliketheideaofworkingwithyourhands,andyoulovetobuildthings.However,asyouresearchthiscareer,youcomeacrossafewthingsyoudon’tlikesomuch.Forexample,youdon’treallywanttoworkoutdoorsintheheatofthesummer,whichisthebusiesttimeforcarpenters.Becausethesummerissobusy,takingasummertimevacationisoutofthequestion.So,nowyouwonderwhatothercareersyouwouldbeinterestedinthatrequirethesameorsimilarskillsascarpentry.

In thisgame,youandyourpartnerwillusetheCFWV.comwebsitetofindacareerthatbestmeetstheneedsdescribedonthestatementI’vegivenyou.Remember,therearedifferentwaystogoaboutfindingtherightcareermatch.YoucansearchbyCareerCluster.Or,withyourpartner,youcanfigureoutwhatcareerisbeingrejected,andfind“relatedcareers”bypathwayorbyviewingtheRelatedCareersboxontheWhat They Dopage.Whenyoufindacareerthatisagoodmatch,writeitdownandbepreparedtoexplainyourreasoning.Havefun!
