Each day across Connecticut, children and

their families are faced with a wide range of

medical illnesses and issues. Whether it’s setting

a cast or treating cancer, Connecticut Children’s

provides kids, from newborns to teenagers, the

highly-specialized care they deserve. In fact,

we are at the forefront of the latest pediatric

research and surgical advances. Each day

Connecticut Children’s doctors and medical

staff work tirelessly to deliver the kind of

medical care we expect for our kids and our

communities. Care that makes kids better —

care they deserve.

“I can’t begin to tell you how impressed I am withConnecticut Children’s. I can’t say enough goodthings about it. Thank you for saving my son’s life.”

As the President and Chief Executive Officer atConnecticut Children’s, I get to hear stories.

Lots of stories, from parents to grandparents tofriends of the many children we care for each yearat the Medical Center. These heartfelt stories, frompeople who could not be more warm and graciouswith their own personal experiences, confirmwhat I believe every day — Connecticut Children’sis truly, one of a kind.

Connecticut Children’s Medical Center is theonly academic medical center in western NewEngland that exists for one purpose only — toprovide the highest level of care to as many children

as possible. We do this with doctors and nurseswho understand children best, because they treatonly children. We do this by providing compre-hensive care, ranging from pioneering advancesin research to complicated surgical procedures.

“So I just wanted to send you a personal note tellingyou that we are completely and truly satisfied withall we have endured in your hospital and haveseen a lot of miracles happen.”

In the past year, Connecticut Children’s provided care to a child over 240,000 times. Onceagain, the past twelve months were the busiestyet in the history of the Medical Center. We alsocelebrated providing care to a child for the2,000,000th time in our short history.

In 2008 Connecticut Children’s and Hartford Hospital’s integrated pediatric and adult trauma

center, The Trauma Institute, received Level I trauma verification and designation from the

American College of Surgeons and the Connecticut Department of Public Health. Pictured

CONNECTICUT CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER 2008 Annual Report 3

As the number of patients we care for eachyear continues to increase, we know that we haveno choice but to continue to expand and broadenour capabilities to care for them as well. In 2008,we increased our capacity in a number of newways, including the following:

• Connecticut Children’s performed the State’sfirst Vertical Expandable Prosthetic TitaniumRib surgery, a new technological procedureto treat severe scoliosis in children;

• The Medical Center is now one of only twohospitals in the State who have performed arelatively new, minimally invasive procedureknown as endoscopic third ventriculostomy(ETV) for children with hydrocephalus;

• Twenty-three new physicians joined the MedicalCenter in thirteen different disciplines. Thisincludes the hiring of a second neurosurgeonon staff, assuring that children referred toConnecticut Children’s will receive the mostadvanced treatment available; and most recently

• Connecticut Children’s and Hartford Hospital’sintegrated pediatric and adult trauma center,The Trauma Institute, received Level I traumaverification and designation from theAmerican College of Surgeons and theConnecticut Department of Health.

While these achievements represent only asmall sample of the steps we took in the past year, they are a clear indication of our commitment tocontinue forward as a leader in advancing pediatriccare at the highest level.

“We do not know how long we will be on thisjourney with our baby, but from day one, everyonehas been actively working to cure our little boy andfor that mindset alone, I will be forever grateful.”

The mission that Connecticut Children’s hasembarked upon for the past twelve years will marchon as well. As we look forward, we realize thatthere are challenges ahead. We are currently facingan uncertain economy that presents circumstancesthat have not been encountered before.

Yet the demand for pediatric health care isblind to these challenges. The reality is that in2009, we expect to provide more care for morekids, in more ways than ever before and weexpect to do the same each year thereafter. Lastyear, in anticipation of this growing demand andfacing a constantly-changing environment, wedeveloped a Strategic Plan to guide us throughwhat we expect to be the next few tumultuous years.

Our Strategic Plan was built to position theMedical Center to best meet the increasing medical needs of the children and families wecare for. We remain committed to our plan andsteadfast on meeting the demand for world-classpediatric care the same way we have been doingso since our inception — with a focus on family-centered care, clinical quality, research and ourability to perform the most advanced technologicaland surgical procedures.

Connecticut Children’s isproud to be the region’s onlyhospital to provide care exclusivelyfor children. As such, our missionis really quite simple – to ensurethat every child receives the carethey need to secure a bright and healthy future – the carethey deserve.

Sincerely,

Martin J. GavinPresident and Chief Executive OfficerConnecticut Children’s Medical Center

CONNECTICUT CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER 2008 Annual Report 5

As the region’s only academicmedical center dedicated exclu-sively to children, ConnecticutChildren’s is unique. It is thisuniqueness that leads moreand more families to turn toConnecticut Children’s eachyear for care. We know that in

the future we can expect this increased demandfor care to continue to grow. We accept this readily, because we know the responsibility of caring forchildren is neither small nor easy.

This is why, though we now face a strugglingand uncertain economy, we move ahead boldly. We move ahead, riding a sea of momentum thathas Connecticut Children’s uniquely positionedto continue to be the leading provider of pediatriccare for the children and families of our region.

We have thought very thoroughly and deliberately about what it will take to competeand succeed in the future of health care, and wehave shaped Connecticut Children’s in recent yearsto meet these needs.

Continued new advances in technology andinnovation will be needed to meet the changingrequirements of providing pediatric health care intoday’s sophisticated world. In addition, we mustcontinue to employ a high performing workforcethat is built from the best and the brightest, fromthe surgeons in our operating suites to our facilitiesstaff, who keep our patients’ rooms warm andfriendly. Finally, it will also take the continuedsupport of our partners in government, businessand the communities we have come to count onand appreciate so richly.

While we must evolve in these and other ways,we will never lose sight of our single mission —to provide the highest level of care to as manychildren as possible. This is the fundamentalprinciple of everything we do. We all share thebelief that the children we care for are the foundation for how everyone at ConnecticutChildren’s thinks about their work, each andevery day.

Connecticut Children’s has a clear vision forsuccess. Executing this vision will not only helpthe Medical Center prosper, but more importantly,it will improve our ability to excel at providinggreat care and service for children and families inour region.

In a recent survey conducted on behalf of theMedical Center, eighty-four percent of respondentsbelieved that a child receives superior care at a hospital that only cares for children, when comparedto one that treats patients of all ages. We couldn’tagree more.

On behalf of the Boards of Directors of theMedical Center, it is our privilege to play a role inleading the future of Connecticut Children’s. Weare grateful for the opportunity to share in thesuccesses of today, and more importantly, thesuccesses yet to come.

Sincerely,

Thomas O. BarnesChairmanConnecticut Children’s Medical Center Board of Directors

CONNECTICUT CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER 2008 Annual Report 7

Rebecca “Becca” Redman is a feisty and

remarkable little girl — full of energy and

life. But life didn’t begin that way for Becca.

Dory Redman, Becca’s mother, became very

sick with HELLP syndrome

(Haemolysis, Elevated Liver

Enzymes & Lowered Platelet

Count) during her 24th week of

pregnancy. Dory’s kidneys and

liver were beginning to shut

down. An emergency c-section

was their only option. Becca was

admitted to Connecticut Children’s

Medical Center’s Neonatal

Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

shortly after she was born on July

30, 2003. At birth, she weighed

only one pound, her tiny body

no longer than a ruler.

Born struggling to breathe,

the NICU team put Becca on an

oscillator respirator and developed

a comprehensive treatment plan.

Becca was in the right hands. As a Level III

premier medical provider, Connecticut Children’s

NICU cares for approximately 500 infants per

year. The NICU is nationally recognized for its

low patient infection rates and its high marks in

patient care, quality of environment and family-

patient satisfaction. “The quality of care that

exists in our NICU is not only noticed by the

staff and our counterparts across the country,

it’s something that our families are very familiar

with as well,” said Dr. Victor Herson, Director

of Neonatology.

For the next several months Becca went through

a series of highly-advanced

treatments to help her body

function normally. On August

18th, Dory and her husband,

Gary were able to hold and kiss

their baby girl for the very first

time. And the good news kept

coming. On September 29th

Becca nursed off of the feeding

tube; on October 29th the feeding

tube was removed, and on

November 7, 2003 Rebecca

Morgan Redman was released

from Connecticut Children’s

NICU weighing a healthy 4lb,

4oz.!

Now Becca Redman is a

strong, healthy five-year-old.

She is making big plans for her

future which include becoming a cheerleader,

ballerina and scientist.

Becca and her family’s story is best summed

up by her mother, Dory, as she reflects on their

amazing journey, “At the time we were not nearly

as scared as we should have been. Now when I

look at Becca and think back, we are terrified of

what could have been without a place like

Connecticut Children’s.”

“One of the challenges for parents is

that in addition to the stress of having

a premature baby, they want to be

the primary caregiver. But they can

end up feeling disenfranchised or

helpless once they see that their

child is being cared for in a incubator.

That’s why we include Mom and

Dad in day-to-day parenting activities

— changing a diaper, checking a

temperature — it means the world

to them.”

“Whether it is teaching the next generation

of pediatricians and surgeons or developing

the next medical protocol for treatment of serious

childhood diseases or basic laboratory research

looking for hidden connections

that will lead to the next leaps

forward — we are always looking

ahead,” said Paul H. Dworkin, MD,

Professor and Chairman,

Department of Pediatrics,

University of Connecticut School

of Medicine and Physician-in-Chief,

Connecticut Children’s Medical

Center. “Our relationship with

the University of Connecticut

School of Medicine is critical to

our efforts to advance care for

children. This partnership is also

integral to the medical school’s

vision of being nationally

recognized and admired for the

students they train. Currently all

of the physicians on staff at Connecticut

Children’s have faculty appointments at the

UConn Medical School.”

The University of Connecticut Pediatrics

Program is based at Connecticut Children’s. The

hospital is home to a strong pediatrics residency

program, with medical students rotating through

the hospital’s departments of pediatrics, pediatric

surgical specialties, and radiology, as well as other

specialty departments for elective course work.

The hospital also trains the UConn surgical

residents in all surgical subspecialty areas of

pediatric surgery. Dr. Dworkin continued, “We are

proud of our training program, which provides

clinical and educational experiences that promote

the development of knowledgeable, skilled, com-

passionate and ethical pediatricians

dedicated to the care of children.”

But the relationship between

the hospital and the university

goes much deeper. Many of the

clinicians from Connecticut

Children’s are also looking at the

fundamental causes and cures for

childhood diseases. “I am lucky. I

get to work with some amazing

researchers at the UConn facility,”

adds Fernando Ferrer, MD, Surgeon-

in-Chief, Connecticut Children’s

Medical Center. Dr. Ferrer has been

working closely with Timothy Hla,

Ph.D., Director of UConn Center for

Vascular Biology. They have been

working with a team of UConn’s

medical research staff to better understand, at a

molecular level, the role of bioactive lipids on

pediatric kidney tumors. “So much progress has

been made in the last twenty years in the treatment

of childhood cancers. And the research we are

engaged in now has tremendous potential to

control and perhaps cure cancer in the future.”

With every year that passes, UConn School of

Medicine and Connecticut Children’s are gaining

critical recognition nationally and internationally.

These bright minds are collaborating to create a

brighter future for children everywhere.

“Connecticut Children’s is committed

to providing the highest quality of

care, characterized by excellence in

clinical service delivery, education and

training and the advancement of

knowledge through research. Our

relationship with the University of

Connecticut School of Medicine affirms

this commitment and helps both

institutions provide extraordinary oppor-

tunities for growth and advancement.”

Sherry Chapman, Co-founder,Mourning Parents Act, Inc. (!MPACT)

Page 13: Care kids deserve. - Connecticut Children's

CONNECTICUT CHILDREN’S MEDICAL CENTER 2008 Annual Report 11

Sherry Chapman does not want any new

members to join the organization she co-

founded four years ago known as Mourning

Parents Act, Inc. (!MPACT).

!MPACT is comprised primarily

of parents whose teenage children

have been killed in an automobile

crash. !MPACT is a nonprofit group

whose mission is to prevent

tragedies caused by inexperienced

drivers through awareness, education

and legislation. Chapman’s 19-year-

old son, Ryan, was killed by an

inexperienced teen driver on

Dec. 7, 2002.

“There have been a number of

high-profile car accidents recently

in which a young driver was killed,”

Chapman said. “We’ve had many of

these victims’ parents join us in an

effort to get the message out.

Unfortunately our increasing roster is a tragic

reminder of the number of inexperienced teen

drivers on the road.”

Chapman co-founded !MPACT with Janice

Palmer whose 17-year-old son, Dan, was killed in

a driving accident in 2002, and Connie and Tom

Jascowski who lost their 16-year-old son, Joey, in an

accident on Dec. 17, 2002. Chapman said !MPACT

members share their experiences in powerful

presentations to high school students across the state.

And like Sherry Chapman, the staff at Connecticut

Children’s would like to not treat as many victims of

teen-driving crashes as they currently do. That is

why the Connecticut Teen Driving Safety Partnership

was created, on which Ms. Chapman serves as

a member. Funded by a grant from the Allstate

Foundation, the Partnership’s overriding mission

is to prevent teenage car crashes

through research, education and

advocacy.

Brendan Campbell, MD, MPH

is the Director of Pediatric Trauma

at Connecticut Children’s and the

principle investigator for the grant

which funds the CT Teen Driving

Safety Partnership. From both his

experience as a surgeon and a

scientist, Dr. Campbell is well aware

that it is much easier to prevent

car-crash related injuries than to

treat them.

“Traumatic injury is the leading

cause of death for children and teens

in Connecticut and motor vehicles

crashes are the most common cause of traumatic

injury,” said Dr. Campbell. “We are strong believers

that community education and advocacy activities are

the most effective way to reduce the injuries and deaths

that result from inexperienced teens driving cars.”

The work of !MPACT and Connecticut Children’s

Teen Driving Safety Partnership was so compelling

that both Dr. Campbell and Ms. Chapman were

asked by Governor M. Jodi Rell to sit on the Teen

Driving Task Force which was formed last year.

The Task Force was instrumental in helping draft

new legislation, which strengthened the state’s

teen driving laws.

C O M M U N I T Y A D V O C A C Y

“While all of us have been

drawn to this issue from different

circumstances, we share a common

goal of keeping Connecticut’s

teenagers alive,” said Dr. Campbell.

“This Partnership is an excellent

example of how dedicated individuals

can work together and produce

meaningful change.”

Brendan Campbell, MDDirector of Pediatric Trauma

As the number of children who come to the

Medical Center increases each year, Connecticut

Children’s continues to grow along with it. In

addition to opening outpatient care centers in

Glastonbury and Farmington,

this growth will continue in

2009 with the opening of

Connecticut Children’s

Waterbury inpatient unit in

January and the opening of a

new outpatient care center in

Trumbull later in the year.

In addition to enhancing the

pediatric health care infrastructure

across the State, this growth allows

Connecticut Children’s to continue

its role as an important contributor

to the local communities and

economies in the towns and cities

from which it operates.

“I think because Connecticut

Children’s is so skilled at their

primary function of providing

high-level pediatric care, some of the other

benefits they bring to a community are often

overlooked,” said Charles W. Shivery, Northeast

Utilities Chairman of the Board, President, and

Chief Executive Officer and a member of

Connecticut Children’s Board of Directors

Among the ways that Connecticut Children’s

contributes economically is by employing more

than 2000 people throughout the State, having

hundreds of affiliated physicians and hosting

hundreds of thousands of patients, family members

and visitors in a number of towns and cities each

year. In addition, each time the

Medical Center expands by opening

a new office, construction is

needed and jobs are created.

“Any time we interview for a

position at Northeast Utilities

with candidates from outside the

area, one of the first things they

ask is: ‘How is the quality of

health care in the area for my

family?’” Mr. Shivery added.

“To be able to say that in

Connecticut Children’s, we have

a leading pediatric care provider,

is very reassuring.”

It is the growing access to

pediatric care, along with the

high quality of care that connects

Connecticut Children’s with

children and families throughout the region.

For years now, the Medical Center has annually

treated children from every one of the 169 towns

and cities in Connecticut. As we continue to grow,

Connecticut Children’s is committed to providing

care for more children and families than ever, as

close to home as possible.

E C O N O M I C H E A L T H

“The continued growth of

Connecticut Children’s is exciting at

many levels. From the jobs that are

created each time the Medical

Center expands to the easier

access for families and our

increased capacity to care for more

children, Connecticut Children’s is

making a difference in numerous

communities throughout the region.”

Fulfilling the hospital’s missiondepends not only on our talented medical professionals, administrators and staff. It alsodepends on the essential supportof our donors. We are fortunatethat countless individuals, corporations, foundations,

organizations and schools share our belief thatthe children and families of our region deserve tohave an academic medical center dedicated exclu-sively to their care.

Our robust group of very special donorsenhances every corner of the Medical Center.Contributions enable our neurosurgeons, neonatalogists, oncologists and other pediatricsubspecialists to treat even the most complex casesin a state-of-the-art facility designed especially forkids. Gifts to our basic, translational and outcomesresearch efforts help us to advance child healthon a regional and national level. And, unrestricteddonations allow us to meet our current needs

while seeking the most innovative ways to expandthe accessibility of the vital services we provide.

As Chairman of the Foundation Board, it ismy pleasure to extend our deepest gratitude to allwhose support has significantly impacted thechildren and families of our region. By giving sogenerously, they are helping to ensure that the workthat is done each day at Connecticut Children’s is the most technologically advanced and compassionate as possible.
