Break Time

“A Day Out” is meant to be just that—for everyone. BACOA’s new adult day respite program at Lutheran Church of the Atonement gives caregivers some much-needed time off—to run errands, get work done or simply recharge. But for the program’s participants, it’s a chance to spend the day in a friendly, warm space doing lots of activities—exercise, crafts, music—with friends. “I’ve not seen my Julie so enthusiastic about any day care,” reported one caregiver, after his wife’s first day in the program. “She was all bubbly about every part of the experience, talking about her day ‘with those nice people’ at A Day Out. Thank you for all you have done.”

Helping to Bridge the Miles

Bob Olson never planned on becoming a caregiver, but when his cousin Mary asked him

to help her handle her affairs, “I didn’t feel like I could say no,” he says. Mary was 96 at

the time; her sister had died, and she had no other close living relatives. “Family was really

important to her,” Bob says, “and when she asked me, she said, ‘You’re the closest relative

that I have that I trust enough.’” There was only one problem: Bob lives in McCook, Nebraska,

more than 700 miles southwest of Barrington.

But Bob works with BACOA social service coordinator Sue McNamara to make sure Mary

gets the care she needs. Sue worked with Bob to help him arrange legal and financial

oversight and continues to coordinate Mary’s care—arranging and taking her to medical

appointments, working with the home care nurse to order other in-home services, tracking

down paperwork, setting up home repairs. “I don’t know how she gets it all done,” says Bob.

“I can’t say enough—it’s really been helpful to me.”

“When Mary asked me to help, I almost didn’t feel like I could do it,” he adds. “But I am

able to do it—thanks to BACOA.”

There are many ways of being a caregiver. Some are small and subtle—a trip to the grocery to pick up some things for a widowed mother; some help with complicated insurance forms, maybe a spring cleanup day for your parents’ yard. Others leave no doubt: countless trips to doctors’ appointments, a change in living situations, a halt to social activities because you can’t leave your husband home by himself. At BACOA, you help us help people who are in every stage of caregiving. For those who may need just a little help, we can answer questions or suggest services. For those who need more, we can work to put together services that will help both the senior and the caregiver—whether it’s arrang-ing for Meals with Wheels, helping them determine safe and appropriate housing, or finding benefits or aid programs that can help a cash-strapped household. Most of all, your support provides relief to what can often be a stressful and lonely job. In our support groups, caregivers learn that they’re not alone—that others have shared their experience and are now willing to share advice and encouragement. In our classes, we give caregivers practical, hands-on tools to help them care more effectively for their loved one and for themselves. In our newest venture, “A Day Out,” which we’re offering with Lutheran Church of the Atone-ment, we hope to give a caregiver’s most valued commodity: Time. Time to run errands, to reconnect with friends, to simply recharge. When we work with caregivers—whatever their stage—we continuously emphasize the impor-tance of staying connected, of sharing your strength, of asking for help. We know that lesson can just as easily be applied to BACOA, and we are grateful to have a community of supporters who can help us do just that. Thank you for all you do.
