Cardiovascular disease has become a reality for you and your family. Perhaps it came as a surprise in the form of a heart attack, a stroke, or a serious vascular problem. Or maybe you suspected you were at risk, or were diagnosed in the earliest stages of cardiovascular disease. If you have cardiovascular disease, you are not alone. It is the number one health problem in America, with one in five adults having some form of the disease.

Fortunately, at Ingalls, you have access to the most comprehensive scope of cardiovascular services available. Sophisticated technology improves diagnostic accuracy and creates new pathways for care. Experienced and talented physicians and staff provide minimally invasive care and effective disease management to help you live long and live well.

Our greatest satisfaction comes from knowing and caring for you. Our desire is to reduce your risk of suffering a future heart attack or stroke, and help you improve your overall health. We will go the extra mile. Your care is what makes our technology and knowledge come alive.

Wholehearted care for a common disease

We call it wholehearted care, and it’s how you know your heart’s in the right place… at Ingalls.

Pinpointing problems with precisionCardiovascular disease presents itself differently in everyone. To fully understand your cardiovascular system, Ingalls offers a complete range of both non-invasive and invasive diagnostic tests in locations throughout the South Suburbs. These include:

• Electrocardiography (EKG) & Holter Monitor EKG• Stress Testing• Echocardiography• Stress Echocardiography• Carotid Doppler Studies• Cardiac Catheterization & Angiography• Transradial Cardiac Catheterization• Intravascular Ultrasound

Variety of treatment optionsThe more options you have, the more likely your treatment will be successful. At Ingalls, we offer a full array of state-of-the-art procedures and therapies as well as access to emerging methods. Your individualized plan may include:

Medical Therapy - Modern medicines can improve cholesterol, lower blood pressure, strengthen your heart, and reduce the risk of blockages.

Angioplasty & Balloon Angioplasty - Opens a blockage or narrowing in an artery so appropriate blood flow can resume.

Stent - A small stainless steel tube implanted in a blocked artery acts as a framework to hold the vessel open.

Coronary Atherectomy - Removes some of the plaque, reopening the artery.

Coronary Artery Brachytherapy - Treats blocked arteries with the addition of radiation, significantly reducing the risk of a previously treated artery narrowing.

Congestive Heart Failure Center - Outpatient treatments, coordinated care and education help reduce shortness of breath or swelling which patients with CHF may experience.

Pacemaker or Defibrillator Implantation - Artificial electrical stimulation for significant problems with the heart’s rhythm.

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG) - For a coronary artery that is severely restricted, a surgeon bypasses the effected area with a chest or arm artery or leg vein to re-route blood to the heart muscle.

Cardiac Valve Surgery - With a mechanical or tissue valve, surgeons repair or replace valves that aren’t properly controlling blood flow through the ventricles.

Transmyocardial Revascularization (TMR) - Unique surgical procedure relieves chronic, severe chest pain. TMR uses short bursts of laser energy to create pathways in the heart muscle that increases blood and oxygen flow to the heart muscle.

First to Offer Coronary Artery RadiationDoctors at Ingalls were the first in the South Suburbs to treat a blocked coronary artery with the addition of radiation. This new procedure, called Coronary Artery Brachytherapy, has been shown to significantly reduce the incidence of restenosis, which is the narrowing of a previously treated artery. Until now, the only alternative for many of these patients was bypass surgery.

Formerly, it was not uncommon for scar tissue to build up within an artery which had previously had a stent placed after an angioplasty. But now, patients at Ingalls benefit from the collaborative efforts of interventional cardiologists and radiation oncologists, who perform the repeat angioplasty in Ingalls Cardiac Catheterization Lab with the addition of the temporary placement of radioactive seeds within the stented segment.

Ingalls continues to remain in the forefront of brachytherapy with the availability of the two different systems approved by the FDA for this treatment. This is an unusual luxury, since most hospitals offer only one of the available systems.

New Pacemaker TechnologyIngalls is one of the first in the nation to offer a revolutionary new treatment for congestive heart failure patients. The “InSync” cardiac resynchronization device represents a major therapeutic breakthrough.

Heart failure occurs when a person’s heart is unable to pump enough blood to sustain an adequate metabolism. With this new therapy, a device is implanted in the upper chest in an attempt to resynchronize the contractions of the ventricles to help the heart pump blood throughout the body more efficiently and reduce the symptoms.

Cardiac resynchronization therapy will benefit thousands of patients immediately by restoring quality of life and functional capacity beyond our expectations.

Technological advances at Ingalls

“ We are proud to be recognized as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals. We are prouder still to serve our families, friends and neighbors in the South Suburbs of Chicago with distinction and our whole hearts for nearly a century.” – Kurt Johnson, CEO

First All-Digital Catheterization LabDoctors at Ingalls can better view and treat coronary artery blockages with Ingalls’ new all-digital cardiovascular imaging system - the first of its kind in the Chicago area. This revolutionary system allows cardiologists to view hard-to-see blood vessels with exceptional clarity under the most difficult conditions. This new technology enables faster procedures, requires less radiation exposure, and gives Ingalls cardiologists the ability to see details, especially balloons and stents, better than ever.

Maximizing Your RecoveryIf you have cardiovascular disease or are recovering from a heart attack, stroke, angioplasty or surgery, improving your physical condition will improve your stamina, strengthen your heart muscle, and reduce your cardiovascular risks. Ingalls offers a professionally-managed rehabilitation exercise program to help you recover safely and reach your highest potential.

Phase I – Cardiac rehabilitation begins right at the bedside for hospitalized heart patients, where cardiac risk factors are identified and physical activity is initiated.

Phase II – After discharge, the patient participates in a supervised outpatient exercise program held at the hospital, three times a week, for a total of 12 weeks. During exercise, each patient’s blood pressure and EKG are carefully monitored. Patients also receive comprehensive education and counseling services, as well as the support of others who have been down the same road.

Phase III – Cardiac fitness is for both recovered heart patients and those at risk for heart disease. Exercise sessions are medically supervised by a specially-trained, registered nurse or exercise physiologist at the Ingalls Wellness Center located at Homewood-Flossmoor Racquet and Fitness Club. This facility features a full complement of exercise equipment in a convenient community setting.

A little exercise goes a long way. It doesn’t have to be hard, and you don’t even have to do it all at once. Taking three brief 10-minute strolls a day provides the same benefit as a 30-minute power walk.

So move a little!

Ensuring Future Heart HealthAt Ingalls, our interests go beyond diagnosing and treating ailing hearts. We want to encourage healthy hearts to stay that way. That’s why we provide recovering patients, or those at risk for heart disease, with the tools they need to lead a heart-healthy lifestyle and detect concerns early.

Women’s HeartAdvantageCardiovascular diseases claim the lives of more women each year than the next seven causes of death combined - and almost twice as many as all forms of cancer. Ingalls was the first hospital in the state to join Women’s HeartAdvantage - a national initiative to change women’s behavior about heart disease, and ultimately, save lives.

Women’s HeartAdvantage raises awareness and changes behavior among women about steps they can take to prevent heart attacks, how to recognize symptoms, and the urgency of seeking prompt treatment should a problem be suspected.

With post-menopausal women, for example, the loss of estrogen makes it more difficult to control blood pressure and the balance of “bad” cholesterol vs. “good” cholesterol. Plus, women experience different symptoms of a heart attack than men, so they sometimes don’t recognize their own life-threatening heart trouble until it’s too late. Ingalls makes it a mission to help women reduce their risk of suffering a heart attack, stroke or other vascular disease.

Lifestyle Modification ProgramsAt the Ingalls Wellness Center in Homewood, you’ll find community classes such as low-fat cooking, weight management, exercise, and smoking cessation. Private nutritional counseling and customized cardiac fitness programs to help you manage your risk and future health are also available. The goal is to find what works for you and help you stick with it.

Screening ProgramsIf you have been diagnosed with a heart problem or are a recovering cardiac patient, Ingalls screening programs can help you detect problems at their earliest stage. They also are important tools for your loved ones - siblings, children, parents - whose increased risk for cardiovascular disease is revealed or inherited with your diagnosis.

Ingalls HeartAware® is a free, online diagnostic screening program that evaluates your cardiac risk factors and overall health. The assessment is confidential, private, and can be completed in just seven minutes. Go to www.Ingalls.org/Heart-Aware-Risk-Assessment.aspx

Smoking is the single most dangerous risk factor, and increases your risk of suffering

a heart attack, stroke, aneurysm and vascular disease, not to mention numerous

cancers. By quitting now, you can enjoy immediate and life-long health benefits.

Ingalls Cardiac Scan uses a high-speed x-ray to detect calcium deposits in the arteries of the heart. This revolutionary screening can pinpoint heart problems before you ever experience any symptoms of heart trouble.

Together, HeartAware and Ingalls Cardiac Scan, along with many other testing options, provide a comprehensive picture of your heart’s health, and give you greater control over your future well-being.

Wholehearted peopleEven the most sophisticated technology cannot heal you by itself. It takes knowledgeable minds, steady hands and caring hearts. Because technology and approaches are constantly evolving, it requires a special kind of professional who loves to be on the leading edge.

The Ingalls cardiovascular team is led by highly skilled cardiologists and cardiac surgeons who trained or held faculty positions at renowned academic institutions including University of Chicago, Harvard, New York University, Boston University, and Albert Einstein University. Our cardiac surgeons perform more heart surgeries than any group in the state. Ingalls staff cardiologists have the same deep experience you would expect in a university hospital setting, but here they provide patient care directly, offering progressive heart services with a personal touch.

Our physicians and surgeons are backed by a team of dedicated health professionals from a variety of disciplines - specially trained registered nurses, pharmacists, exercise physiologists, therapists, dietitians and many others.

Together, these professionals have earned the Ingalls Heart and Vascular program the recognition and respect of industry experts, and even more importantly, the appreciation of patients.

Hearts in the right placeHeart disease, stroke and vascular disease can be killers, and each is connected to the same underlying risk factors. When you manage your risk factors, it improves your odds of staying healthy in three ways. At Ingalls, our passion is to improve each person’s overall cardiovascular health and ultimately enrich and extend their life. We can reduce your risks through education, prevention, advanced diagnostics and modern medicines. If necessary, minimally-invasive treatments or skillful surgery make it possible for you to receive exceptional care that’s exceptionally close. We’ll share our passion, experience and expertise, because our heart’s in the right place…and so is yours, at Ingalls.
