Otari Parish is situated in one of the most beautiful parts of Wellington. It is easy to experience the wonder of God’s creation by simply taking a walk through Otari-Wilton bush or Zealandia. These treasures of our parish have been lovingly cared for by generations who wanted these places to be available for the future. These examples show we have the knowledge, creativity and commitment to care for our common home. It is always a pleasure to take a turn contributing to the Otari parish newsletter. I thought you might like to read my contribution from last Sunday.

On Thursday the 1st of September Pope Francis joined with the world in a day of prayer for our common home.

Road Patrol We need an URGENT volunteer road patroller for every 2nd Wednesday in Term 4. Please contact Fiona on 021 846 635 if you can help out. Farm trip Despite the weather the students had a wonderful time yesterday at the dairy farm. They got up close and personal with calves and some students got a chance to feed them from the bottle. Thank you to all the parents who helped out with the farm trip. We really appreciated your support and hope you enjoyed the trip. Onesie day We will be celebrating Onesie Day tomorrow (Friday 9 September) to support the Wellington Free Ambulance. Students can come along to school wearing a Onesie (or PJ’s), and bring a gold coin donation to support keeping the Wellington Free Ambulance free! WZ Swimming

The Cardinal McKeefry representatives at the Interzone swimming competition were Laura, Flynn, Tino and Eamonn. There was a definite step up in the level of competition and all races were fiercely fought from start to finish. Laura swam in three finals and placed third in the 25m backstroke. Tino qualified for two finals and Eamonn and Flynn competed strongly in their heats but were pipped at the post for spots in their finals.

It is a great achievement to represent Cardinal McKeefry and the Western Zone at swimming and the school community should be very proud of the efforts of the whole Cardinal McKeefry team.

Dancesplash 2016 Lights, camera, action! The speakers burst into life as the song filled the theatre and we began to dance. Sweat dripped down our foreheads as our hearts beat faster with anticipation. We leapt our way along the stage with passion and pride. The gleeful expressions spread across our faces as we connected with the dance and all of our hard work shone through us as we smiled towards the audience. With one dance move it was all over. The lights dimmed, the cameras were put away (well the mobile phones were put away!) and the action stopped. It was a night we will never forget. Zoe and Maddie.

Rugby Tournament Flynn and Eamonn are members of the U11 Marist St Pats Huntsman team, and Daniel C is a member of the U10 West Rep team that will participate in a rugby tournament in Taupo this weekend. Teams from all over the country and some from overseas play in this annual event. We wish them safe travels and the best of luck in their games.

Winter Netball—Saturday 10 September This Saturday marks the last day of play for the winter and it's been another successful season for our three teams. Big thanks to all our players, coaches and managers for taking part this year. Also big thanks to all the parents for supporting your children throughout the season. Thank you too to Mrs Savage and Mrs Reynard for coming to watch some of the games. Jacqui.

A word from Mrs Savage: Thank you so much Jacqui Van Der Kaay for running netball at CMcK and taking over our Western Zone netball organisation. We are very grateful for all your hard work.

Our 2nd to last game for the netball season where Emeralds came up against a very tough team in Otari Emeralds (what a neat name) going down 17 to 3. Well done to our girls for battling it out on the court for 4 quarters. Our MVP went to Isabeĺla.

8.30 Rubies vs Wadestown Storm - Marsden 1 9.20 Sapphires vs St Bernards Saints - Marsden 1 10.10 Emeralds vs Karori Normal Pohutakawas - Marsden 2

Future Ferns Netball For the last two terms Vandita, Anisha, Allen, Alex, Alisha, Jessica, Eugene, Crystal and Ananyaa have been part of Future Ferns with the children from St Teresa's on Friday afternoons. We are very grateful to the St Teresa's parents, Rachel, Rebecca and Hamish, for their time, energy and enthusiasm in coaching our kids and making it so much fun. Rachel has done lots of organising and emailing to make everything happen too. We really do appreciate it.

Over the last three Saturday’s two teams, the Minties and the Crunchies, have taken part in an Interschool tournament in Karori. It’s great to see our budding young players teaming up with St Teresa's players and enjoying learning netball skills. Our children have really given it their all and worked well together. They have been effective on defence and been zooming around the court to find space so the ball can be passed down towards the goal. They have progressed so much over the three Saturdays and we are very proud of them all. Pam.

Otari Parish News

In 2016, Social Justice Week runs from

11-17 September and the focus is on migration.

This year the theme for parishes is We all have a migration story: Fostering a culture of encounter

“Welcoming others means welcoming God in person! Do not let yourselves be robbed of the hope and joy of life born of your experience of God’s mercy, as manifested in the people you meet on your journey!” – Pope Francis. The Masses will be reflecting this theme as will Cardinal McKeefry School in their Religious Education Programme during this time. You may wish to share with your children their ‘Migration Story’.
