I n 1984, shortly after Jim Moran founded the Youth Automotive Training Center, he decided the school needed a logo that visually would communicate what YATC was all about. In collaboration with David Williams, then an associate with JM Family Enterprises / Southeast Toyota Distributors Marketing Department, Jim Moran requested a graphic that captured YATC’s mission of giving troubled youth a second chance in life. By the time the first class began its six–month program in October 1984, YATC had adopted a logo that would represent it for 25 years. Since then, many people have noticed how well it depicts Jim Moran’s vision and the YATC mission statement. “The transition of a young man first leaning against the light pole with his head down and his hands in his pockets to a skilled mechanic confidently moving into a brighter future shows what Jim Moran wanted for every student,” said YATC Board President Larry McGinnes. “His dream was for each and every one of them to gain the self–worth and self–respect they need to fulfill their dreams.” As the YATC program evolved with the addition of life management skills classes in 1988, a full–time academic instructor in 1991 and an expanded curriculum, the original logo still communicated YATC’s mission and Jim Moran’s dream. Friends of YATC often asked Jim Moran if he would consider updating the school's name and logo by adding his name to both. “His answer was always a swift and consistent no, saying, ‘YATC is not about me, it is about the kids and their future,’” McGinnes recalled. Soon after Jim Moran’s death in April 2007, the idea of amending the logo resurfaced and in 2009 the change was approved. In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of YATC, the Board of Directors, with the support of Jan Moran, revealed the new logo, which now includes Jim Moran’s signature and appears on the front of the YATC building. “The original logo told the YATC story for the first 25 years while our Founder was with us,” said McGinnes. “Now the new logo keeps that story and history alive, demonstrating that Jim Moran’s mission remains intact. His legacy lives on through the kids of YATC — past, present and future.” News From The Youth Automotive Training Center Fall 2010 YATC logo captures Founder’s vision then and now

YATC MissionStatement

The mission of the Youth AutomotiveTraining Center is to train andeducate at–risk youth in basicautomotive repair skills, academicremediation, job readiness and lifemanagement skills. The goal of thisprogram is to prepare young adultswho are at a disadvantage in theirlives to become self–sufficient, productive, law–abiding citizens.

At this time every year, YATC is preparing for the newschool session to begin. We’ve gone through hundredsof applications for the 30 student slots, conducted morethan 100 interviews and selected the best candidates forour program. It is an intense process for the whole YATCteam and now we are ready to get started!

Our mission at YATC is clear. Jim Moran provided thevision that is the very core of the school, and we workhard each and every day to ensure that we meet his expectations. Whilethe program’s core values are constant, we always are exploring how wecan “do it better,” as the Boss used to say. Because YATC is committed tothe success and development of our students and graduates, we want tobe more creative, innovative and caring.

A recent example of this is our new partnership with Tire Kingdom.Tire Kingdom has been a friend and supporter of YATC for 15 years, but it was not until last year in a meeting with its executives that wediscovered a new way for us to partner — through the creation of a jobplacement program for YATC graduates. It seemed so simple. I thoughtto myself, “Why didn’t we think of this before?” It will help ourstudents and graduates get the jobs and the experience they truly need.

With the graduation of the Class of 2010, the total number of alumnigrew to more than 500. And while that number alone is impressive,I have to point out that the school’s impact does not end there. It stretches to our graduates’ families, families of families, friends, neighbors and into the community at large. We see the “YATC effect”often as graduates come back to visit with their own children andrealize how immensely changed they are and in turn, how they havechanged the lives of those around them. To me, it shows how YATCpays it forward. All of this is possible thanks to friends like you, ourdedicated Board of Directors, Advisory Board, volunteers, staff andour many donors. Thank you for supporting the mission of YATC!

Graduate Spotlight:Ed Carmona,Class of 2005

In 2004, Ed Carmona saw a magazine advertisementthat caught his eye. It was about a program that helpedtroubled youth learn automotive repair skills. As a child,Carmona was interested in cars and science and how thetwo worked together. The program seemed a perfect fitfor the then 20-year-old who said he realized that,“Hanging out in the streets did not constitute having abright future.”

Looking back, Carmona sees his decision to apply toYATC as a pivotal moment.

“Who knew one interview could change my life?” hesaid. “It’s the small steps that count. That's what I'velearned.”

Carmona’s difficult family life and vulnerability tonegative elements around him led him down adangerous path. After moving from Caracas, Venezuela,to Miami when he was 12, Carmona and his familylater settled in Boca Raton where he got in trouble withthe law.

During the nine–month program at YATC, Carmona’sattendance was spotty, yet he remained focused andcommitted to completing the program.

“Ed was the kind of guy who had the drive andwherewithal to learn about cars, but he was constantlyup against personal challenges,” recalls YATC ExecutiveDirector Terry Routley. “YATC became the family thathe needed at that time.”

As a new student, Carmona remembers how FounderJim Moran came to class to introduce himself.

“The entire class became quiet,” Carmona said. “We feltintrigued that such a person would dedicate his life tohelp people like us. After he spoke, we all got into a lineto shake his hand. I took a picture with him and thankedhim for everything that he was doing for us.”

While at YATC, Carmona balanced his studies with a jobat a local Jiffy Lube. He carefully listened to the advice

of the guest speakers in class who spoke about patienceand never giving up in life. After his graduation, he washired by Advance Auto Parts (AAP) as a technician.Believing that more education was in his future, he took achance and enrolled in Valencia Community College(VCC) in Orlando in 2007. AAP transferred him to a storein Orlando, and Carmona began working toward success.

At VCC, he became a leader in student government, volunteered at a local hospital and participated in blooddrives and school events. In May, Carmona earned hisassociate’s degree and has been accepted to attend theUniversity of Florida to pursue a bachelor’s degree inchemistry. He is eager to conduct lab research at theuniversity level.

As a five–year alumnus, Carmona is grateful to the YATCstaff for the help and encouragement he received and saidwithout that support he would be on another path today.

“I believe that all of us want to do something unique inlife, but finding the resources and taking the time to planit out is the most difficult part.”

“One drive and I was a believer.”That’s how YATC Founder Jim Morandescribed the first Toyota he everdrove. It was a red, stick–shift CoronaRT–52 Coupé, and Jim Moran laterwrote in his book Jim Moran: TheCourtesy Man that he attempted topush that car to its limits, including ashift into reverse while driving 55 mph.Impressed with the quality of theCorona, he agreed to become one ofToyota’s first private distributors in theUnited States in 1968.

Last February, Kelly Jordan of Atlantagenerously donated a 1969 ToyotaCorona to YATC. His fondness for theJapanese culture, people and their“extraordinary” design of classic cars

began when helived in Japan whileserving in theFriendshipForce, acultural exchange programcreated by former PresidentJimmy Carter. He lived with a hostfamily and quickly developed anaffinity for Japanese cars — inparticular, the Corona. Years later,he purchased a 1969 Corona andrestored the car himself. Recently hedecided that this gem of a car neededto be displayed.

As a young man, Jordan heard thenames Jim Moran and Southeast Toyota. His late father, S. Kelly Jordan, Sr.,

worked in the South Florida autoindustry for more than 25 yearsand served on civic committees withJim Moran, noting his dedication tothe community. When Jordan wasready to part with the Corona, hecould think of no better way tohonor the memory of his father than

to have his prizedpossession displayed atthe school Jim Moranfounded.

According to YATCExecutive DirectorTerry Routley, therestoration andreconditioning of theCorona will be astudent/instructorproject and ultimatelythe vehicle will bedisplayed at YATC, aswell as during off–sitefunctions that benefitthe program. Amemorial plaquerecognizing Jordan’sgenerosity will bemounted on thedashboard of the car.

Guest speakers & field trips inspire and motivate students

During YATC’s twice–a–week lifeskills sessions, the members of theClass of 2010 listened to a wide varietyof speakers who discussed topicsranging from financing and marketinga business to understanding thedifference in the legal system.

Students received expert advice from alocal Deerfield Beach dentist MaureenO’Flanagan, DDS, who spoke aboutoral hygiene and presented photos ofthe devastating effects drugs can haveon teeth. The Rev. Anthony Pelt, senior pastor at the Radiant LivingWorship Center, brought the realitiesof life to his sessions, giving adown–to–earth perspective on everydaychoices and the impact they have.

Service Training Specialist Guy Browntraveled from the Southeast ToyotaDistributors Service Tech andTraining Center in Jacksonville toYATC, where he conducted an all–daydemonstration of Toyota HybridTechnology. In addition, YATC

Advisory Board member Jim Crockerof TekPartners guided the groupthrough an online job search anddemonstrated how to write and post aresumé online.

Students toured facilities that offerpotential jobs. They toured the USCoast Guard Station at PortEverglades and learned aboutplacement positions, weapons, and

rescue protocol used on a 41–footUtility Boat. At the All Service Refusefacility, each student learned fromexperts how maintenance is performedon the refuse trucks.

“The field trips and speakers arecarefully planned with the objective ofgiving students a chance to see forthemselves and listen to professionals,”said Eddie Marchan, YATC lead

student services advisor.“This way, they see thepossibilities of jobs intheir future.”

Fun trips included iceskating, fishing, bowling, touring the BankAtlanticCenter, and a matineeperformance of “TheColor Purple” at theBroward Center for thePerforming Arts.

Thank you to all 2009–2010guest speakers and fieldtrip sponsors!

Dale Henderson, general manager at All Service Refuse, explained the importance of refusetruck maintenance and how YATC students can put their automotive skills to work in the industry.

Former NBA All–Star Dan Roundfield annually visitsYATC to speak to students about achieving their goals. As along–time supporter of YATC, he reminds the students to usethe chance the school is giving them to follow their dreams.

Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputy HaroldMorrison begins each school year with wiseadvice to students that includes using goodjudgment in daily life.

Speaking to a crowd of hundreds of YATC friends was a dauntingtask for Maxu Daceus, a graduate of Class 24 (2002). But telling hisstory to those gathered at the 2009 Jim Moran Classic wasn’t aschallenging as the decision he made nearly a decade ago to turn hislife around and walk away from drugs, crime and gangs that hadfilled his life since he was 11 years old. Speaking from his heart,Daceus told the gathering how YATC influenced him.

“Because I found this program, my life has changed. I would not bewhere I am today without YATC and Mr. Moran,” he said.

Hearing Daceus’ story was a chance for those at the Jim MoranClassic to hear firsthand how their contributions make a difference.Daceus is one of more than 500 YATC alumni, all of whom areeligible to receive assistance with job placement, scholarshipsand additional training as long as they remain drug-free, law-abiding citizens.

Today, Daceus is afull–time automotivetechnician at MarooneVolvo in Delray Beach,Florida. Married and theproud father of a5–year–old daughter, hehas a long list of goals hewants to achieve, including continuinghis education.

Thanks to the support ofhundreds of generouscompanies andindividuals, Daceus willhave that chance. DuringYATC’s 25th Anniversaryyear, the 2009 Jim MoranClassic generated fundingfor the operating budget, allowing YATC tocontinue training andeducating students inbasic automotive repairskills, academicremediation, job readiness
