Second Harvest works to end areahunger by 2015story and photos by Caitlin Rulien

    Second Harvests warehouse is a

gaping space, stacked with boxes of

food towering over pallets of cans and

    bottles of Gatoradeover 20 million

pounds went in and out over the

course of 2011. There is the constant

clatter of items being shifted by

volunteer workers and the thump of

boxes being transferred from lifts to

    trucks.

The mission of Second Harvest is to solicit andredistribute surplus food. The food bank, theonly in the region, has its main warehouse onthe Northside of Jacksonville.

Second Harvest North Florida is one of the fiveprograms under Lutheran Social ServicesHowever, the food bank is branded separatelyas it is run predominantly by raised funding. Inorder to emphasize the importance of evensmall donations, Second Harvest hasestablished the $1=Seven Meals plan.

No one stretches a dollar like us. For everydollar donated, we are able to generate sevenmeals, much more than if you purchased at astore, said Bruce Ganger, Second HarvestsExecutive Director.

    volunteers last year, accumulating

over 24 thousand hours of work.Second Harvests goal of ending

hunger in north Florida by 2015 is

    seemly unattainable now but with

    the cont inued, increas ing

    advocacy and support of the

    community, a very real change

    can occur.

Volunteers at Second Harvest North Florida

have a tradition of signing a wall in the

Jessie Street warehouse. In 2011 Second

Harvest had the help of over 37,000

    volunteers.
