So when I got a new car stereo with satellite radio for Christmas (not wished for) rather than the pricey Le Creuset Dutch oven that I did ask for, or a pair of strappy designer heels to feed my shoe addiction, I did my best to appear

enthusiastic and appreciative.“Sirius has 120 stations and no commercials,”
said my husband.“Neat,” said I.“You’re going to love it,” he added.“I bet,” I nodded.“When we go on road trips we won’t have to
change the station,” he said.“How about that,” I said, and carefully
stacked the boxes with all the bits and pieces required for installation into a tidy pile.
Several weeks later, after his prompts to make an appointment at Performance Car Stereo in North Van didn’t get the desired effect, my gift-giver called them and set the date for me. One morning without my car and a quick lesson later, and I was ready to hit the road.
I poked Channel 1, and got an earful of standard Top 40. From Channels 4 through 9 I discovered a direct correlation to past decades of music (of course I paused at ’80s on 8 and ’90s on 9 . . . those were my party years, after all).
I soon discovered a fondness for Alt Nation on Channel 21, First Wave on Channel 22 and the mellow acoustic tunes on The Coffee House (Channel 30).
I decided to skip the 24-hour a day Springsteen (10) and Pearl Jam (17) channels, and sampled two minutes of Howard Stern (100) only to get incredibly offended . . . I avoid him at all costs now.
Still, it wasn’t long before I was driving the long way home so I could sing along to an old Clash song, and even sat parked outside my house for 20 minutes once as I tried to decide on my pre-set channels (still an entertaining work
in progress). Among my current favourites: The Spectrum on Channel 18, Iceberg (85) and CBC Radio 3 (86).
So, as it turns out, I love it — there are 120 stations with no commercials! Plus, we took a family ski trip to the Interior at the end of January, and we didn’t have to search for new stations; our reception remained clear.
Here’s how Sirius Satellite Radio works: vehicles equipped with a satellite radio receiver and a subscription get unlimited access to all 120 channels of commercial-free music, news, talk, sports and comedy.
There are dedicated rock, reggae, hip hop, jazz, classical and country channels plus talk and entertainment, live sports coverage and news from NPR, CNBC, BBC, CBC and more.
Most new vehicles are available with satellite radio. If your car doesn’t have an integrated satellite radio, there are a variety of Sirius dock–and–play and portable radios available that can be installed quickly and easily (like mine).
Satellite radio provides coverage across North America from urban centres to some of the most remote regions. Even while you are travelling from one province to another or within the United States, the reception remains clear. You can drive from Victoria to Charlottetown or Winnipeg to Miami without ever having to change the channel. Though you cannot, I have discovered, get any reception at all in an underground garage. Sirius subscribers in Canada can also download a listening app for their BlackBerry, iPhone, iPod Touch or Android device and stream their favourite channels. The app is available at www.sirius.ca/mobile.

SPRING has fi nally arrived; it’s that time of year to pack the family into the car and take off for a long weekend road trip.
Before you drive too far from home though, make sure your car made it through the winter season without a hitch.
Chuck Taylor, general manager of Taylormotive Auto Repair says it’s important to do a safety inspection after winter driving to make sure that everything is operating properly with brakes, suspension steering and exhaust.
“The problem today is that there’s a lot of salt on the roads. What happens is that a lot of salt gets in the brake mechanisms especially with disc brake cars,” he said.
Give the car a really good wash, inside and out, to get all of the leftover salt or any additives that cars get coated in during the cold season. Salt that builds up on the fl oor mats that doesn’t get washed out can eventually cause rust underneath.
In fact, keeping your car washed and waxed throughout
the seasons is recommended to prevent dirt and rust from biting into the paint.
The next thing to check is the tread on the tires. If you have winter tires change them to summer tires, and check the tire pressure to ensure they haven’t defl ated. Tire rotation is suggested every 9,600 kilometres.
Before people take off to go on an adventure the windows should also be inspected for cracks, and especially important for where we live is making sure wiper blades are in good condition.
Road-trippers should also
be on the lookout for any lights that are out.
“It’s important to make sure your lights are aimed properlyand that they are in good condition. Lenses tend to fogup and can look a little yellow. If you sit in traffi c, the coating gets all glazed and yellow. Some cars look like the headlights are hardly even working; that’s due to exhaust emissions when you are in traffi c,” said Taylor.
The battery is something that needs to be checked so your family doesn’t end up waiting for the tow truck on the

Save gas: drive lean and cleanBY adopting these fi ve driving behaviours, you can cut back on gas, save money, curb harmful emissions and improve safety on our roads.
1. Be mindful — Seatbelts and car seats revolutionized the way we drive and forever changed the way we think about safety and driving. Nowadays, the buzz is all about fuel effi ciency, saving money and the environment. If you have never driven with fuel effi ciency in mind, now is the time to start. Make it a priority and watch your pennies pile up. You could save as much as $500 a year in fuel costs and cut your carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1,000 kilograms.
2. Become aware of your driving style and modify it accordingly — Are you aggressive, rushed, average or fuel–effi cient? Natural Resources Canada identifi es these four driving behaviours as signifi cant factors in fuel effi ciency and driving. Aggressive drivers focus on speed, rushed drivers focus on saving time, average drivers react to changes in traffi c whereas fuel-effi cient drivers are always mindful of how their driving will affect their fuel consumption.
3. Think before you drive — Can you take public transit? One bus takes up to 40 cars off the road, saves as much as 70,000 litres of fuel and prevents nine tonnes of air pollutants from being emitted each year. Can you work from home? Telecommuting one day a week cuts the amount of fuel used to go to work by 20 per cent that week. Can you plan your route? Allow for fewer stoplights, intersections and pedestrian traffi c.
4. Avoid unnecessary idling — Some Canadians spend about four per cent of their
annual fuel consumption idling their vehicles. In fact, for every 10 minutes of idling one third of a litre of fuel is wasted for an average vehicle. Experts recommend turning off your engine when you are parked for more than 60 seconds, except in traffi c. Also, the best way to warm up your vehicle in cold weather is to run it for two to three minutes and then drive it.
5. Maintain your vehicle — Proper tire infl ation, reducing extra weight, removing roof racks and following the maintenance schedule in your vehicle’s owners’ manual, all help to keep your fuel consumption in check.
Driving with fuel effi ciency in mind takes time, knowledge, steady hands and feet and a sense of commitment. Natural Resources Canada has more tips, tricks and trivia at www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca.
www.newscanada.com
USING your air conditioner in stop-and-go traffi c can increase fuel consumption by as much as 20 per cent.
For city driving, opening a window is the best option.
For highway driving, open your vents. If you’re still hot, keep the windows closed and use the air conditioner as needed.

side of the highway. Taylor reminds people not to disconnect batteries, “because you can lose radio memory and other car computer memory.”
The constant stopping and starting in the colder months means that your brakes and pads are also vulnerable to damage and should be
looked over for any wear or corrosion from salt. Springtime means it’s oil change time because cold temperatures make motor oil work harder than usual so it’s a good idea to change it once the warmer season arrives.
Once all of those parts of your car are looked over, then pile the family into the car and have a great trip!

RUST: The car killer. People don’t usually notice
it at fi rst when it takes hold of wheel wells or fenders, but once it does our car could be marked for death.
On the North Shore, cars are likely to be the victims of rust. Rust develops when the metal is exposed to air or moisture for a period of time, even from tiny rocks chipping the paint.
There are some things car owners can do to protect their car from falling victim to rust.
Make sure your car is washed regularly. When clean it’s easier to see if there are chips in the paint, which, “is the perfect breeding ground for rust,” said Brad Green, owner of Elite Auto Body.
If cars aren’t washed regularly then dirt, grime and salt provide a perfect slice of heaven for salt and rust to take a bite out of your car.
“Most cars are steel
aluminum these days and the majority of panels are steel, as soon as the steel is exposed to the air is will start to rust within days,” said Green.
Some auto body companies advertise paint protection services that will make a car rustproof for a lifetime but there is some doubt to that claim. The sealants are actually estimated to last for roughly a year.
Can’t make it to the body shop right away? A can of touch up paint is a good idea to keep on hand to temporarily protect the exposed metal. And in a pinch, clear nail polish will do the job until you can drive to the body shop.
“The problem with rust is it’s cancer for your car. If you get at it right away then you can stop it from expanding,” said Green.

TUNE UP AND DRIVE
WHEN it comes to purchasing a new vehicle, you might want
to consider buying the most fuel–effi cient one that meets your needs.
Follow these tips to help you make an informed decision:
■ Do some research before you leave home — The Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)
website, www.vehicles.nrcan.gc.ca, lets you compare the fuel consumption of various makes and models of vehicles for a specifi c year.
■ Check out the EnerGuide
Label — Compare vehicles using the EnerGuide label that is found on all new cars. The label shows city and highway fuel consumption ratings and an estimated annual fuel cost for that particular vehicle. The values may not be perfect but they’re a start.
■ Choose a vehicle that fi ts your everyday needs in terms of size and power. Put some serious thought into your space and cargo needs — do you really need a minivan when a compact would do? Passenger cars with smaller engines tend to deliver better fuel economy than those with larger engines. Keep in mind horsepower levels have doubled over the past two decades and the power available in today’s subcompact cars exceeds that of many midsize sedans of the mid-1980s.
■ Choose a manual instead of an automatic transmission. Look for the transmission option that minimizes fuel consumption. Generally speaking, manuals will use less fuel, saving up to 100 litres a year.
■ Two-wheel drive vs. four-wheel drive. The added
weight and drive train losses you get with four-wheel and “all-wheel” drive systems increase fuel consumption. Although all-wheel drive can offer better traction when accelerating under slippery conditions, it doesn’t assist in turning or braking; there is no substitute for safe driving habits.
■ Think about your extras. Accessories and power features can be a big drag on an engine, increasing fuel consumption. How much do you really need a sunroof or roof rack? Are they worth the increased fuel consumption and emissions?
Do your homework and watch your savings add up and your emissions go down.
