Greetings From Your Chapter Directors

Carl & Nancy Allen

GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”

Happy June everyone.

Nancy and I, along with a barrage of others, have been visiting the Central chapters and

having a lot of fun moving the Couple’s Plaque, chasing the Central Traveler’s Plaque

and eating a lot of food. We appreciate the visits of other chapter members who travel

with us or go by themselves. We keep Chapter A out there and enjoy the fellowship

of the other chapters.

We had a total of 13 (5 from Chapter A)

attend the Road Captain Course held at

the Pinecroft Sedgefield Fire District Sta-

tion at 2239 Bishop Rd, Greensboro, NC

27406 (off Bishop & Groometown Road)

on May 11th. Great participation and

sharing of information.

We are looking forward to seeing every-

one out and about.

May is a wrap, and it tied for the 4th hottest May on record, glad it didn’t make it to 1st place! It really made us aware of hyperthermia, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. There are some new hydra-tion products on the market to help us deal with heat issues. On Saturday, May 18, I was teaching a motorcycle class and, even though I was carrying a water bottle and drinking copious amounts of water, found that I was seriously overheated, and on the verge of passing out. An EMT class was be-ing held at the school that day, and one of the instructors suggested that I drink “pickle juice”. Worth a try, and certainly less expensive than the commercial hydration mixes. It worked, relieving the muscle spasms for Saturday and Sunday!

There are metal water bottles with filtration built in, which are better for us than many of the packaged plastic bottles of water, which may be nothing more than tap water (per Consumer Re-ports). Also, there are numerous rehydrating electrolyte drinks and drink mixes – Gatorade is very well known, but many new, and probably better, products are available. I just picked up a 30-pack of Liquid I.V. at Costco for about $22 – pricey, but boasts 3 times the electrolytes, and 2 to 3 times more hydration and faster. I am definitely trying this – but I’m keeping a jar or two of dill pickles on hand as well (just in case)!

We had our Road Captains Course on May 11, weather was good, cloudy and overcast, but we fin-ished before the rain set in. District Rider Educator Tony Prewitt conducted the course, getting up at Oh-dark-thirty to ride in from Fayetteville that morning. Carl provided coffee and donuts (brain food) to help us focus in the class room. Great experience, and definitely worth doing!

I’m a Life Member of both GWRRA and AMA (American Motorcyclist Association), and have not as yet won a motorcycle from either, although I did win a Piaggio from the NC Motorcycle Safety Foun-dation. In the June 2019 issue of the AMA magazine, they reported that Lisa Malachowsky of Apex, NC, won the AMA Hall of Fame raffle bike, a 2017 Ural Gear Up Adventure Together Edition bike and sidecar. Wow! Guess I’d better buy more WOS GoldWing tickets! Maybe my time is coming this year. No kidding, we’re selling these tickets, but we’ve got to remember to give ourselves a chance and buy a bunch ourselves – it’s certainly worth the chance!

Also, in the AMA magazine, there was a question about riding in lightning. Cars and trucks have metal skins, and do provide some protection. However, convertibles and motorcycles do not. It has happened to motorcyclists – and the outcome is seldom good. Advice: seek shelter where you can wait out the storm. Underpasses would be a last resort for me, as other vehicles may try to share that same space, and trees may attract the lightning. A covered parking area such as a gas station might be a good choice. Just think about boating rules, get off the water in a thunderstorm. Or, even better, think about golfers out on the golf course with those nice lightning rods known as golf clubs, especially when they seek shelter under the trees. We all need to be educated and use good sense. If you can’t find shelter, turn away from the storm’s direction and ride away from the storm. Delay your ride at least 30 minutes after the storm has passed. Note: I moved here from Tampa, FL, the lightning capital of the US – only to find that Greensboro, NC ranks (at that time) No. 2! It is se-rious and can be deadly.

June 17 is the 28th celebration of two wheeled commuting -- International Ride to Work Day. This is always the third Monday in June (www.ridetowork.org). For those of us who must work for a liv-ing, commuting by motorcycle can make the commute more enjoyable and certainly reminds us and others of the fun and benefits of riding. In Taiwan, Indonesia, and Vietnam, more than 50 percent use a motorcycle or scooter for daily transportation, In the US, motorcyclists are less than 1 percent of the traffic mix, and approximately 4.3 percent of that 1 percent use a motorcycle as a primary ve-hicle year-round, and an additional 9.9 percent use motorcycle as primary only seasonally (understandable in areas impacted by severe winter weather). We’re in prime riding season now, so let’s get out and enjoy riding, so many places to go, so many wonders to see!

Ride safely, remember to do your T-CLOCS inspection on your bikes, check those tires carefully, keep your first aid kit up-to-date, and dress for the ride (and the weather). Paula, Ride Coordinator 336-601-9216
