On behalf of The Junior League of Austin we welcome you to A Christmas Affair 2017 – Haute Holiday. This year our 77 volunteers have lined up a terrific group of merchants and five days of events that includes something for everyone.

In addition to delighting the 25,000+ patrons who join us yearly to kick off the holiday season, A Christmas Affair is our largest fundraiser and our best opportunity to showcase The Junior League of Austin’s impact in the local community.

The funds raised throughout this five-day event help us to achieve our mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

This year alone, our 2,500 volunteers will donate more than $815,000 to our community and log 160,000 volunteer hours. We will distribute 35,000 coats through our Coats for Kids program in early December and will deliver more than 47,000 backpacks of food to elementary school students facing food insecurity in Del Valle ISD. Additionally, we will partner with 35 local nonprofits to provide funds and volunteers in support of their specific missions.

While the calendar year is coming to a close, The Junior League of Austin is busy planning for 2018. First off will be Austin Entertains, a culinary experience led by Austin’s greatest female chefs, which will be held at Fair Market on February 22. Austin Entertains will be quickly followed by the family favorite Bunny Brunch on March 24, 2018. Both of these events are

expected to sell out so please visit our website for more information.

Lastly, after years of working closely with the City of Austin and our extensive project team, we will be hosting an official groundbreaking for our new Community Impact Center on January 18, 2018! This new space, located on the corner of 360 and Bluffstone, will position the JLA to do more of what is does best – impact the Austin community by providing funding, volunteer power, and the strength of women qualified to lead and serve. We want to thank each and every one of you for your support as we kick off the 42nd year of this treasured tradition.

Proceeds from A Christmas Affair directly benefit our Central Texas community, supporting more than 35 area non-profits with financial resources and trained volunteers each year. Internal programs such as FIT-Food In Tummies and Coats for Kids are supported as well. FIT volunteers provide weekly nourishment to elementary-aged children who qualify for free or reduced lunches. The FIT program will provide approximately 1,400 backpacks over 34 weeks to the entire student population of two local, low-income elementary schools. Coats for Kids is in its thirty-first year of operation. We expect to distribute more than 35,000 coats to local families in need this December.

This event would not be possible without the dedicated members of the ACA Committee, who have contributed thousands of hours to ensure its success. It has been an honor to serve with such a talented and committed group of women whose drive and dedication reflect the mission of The Junior League of Austin.

The holidays are marked by the warmth of a fire, the sweet smells of homemade treats and the annual celebration of The Junior League of Austin’s A Christmas Affair! This community tradition allows The Junior League to support 35 partner agencies along with League signature programs such as Coats for Kids and FIT - Food in Tummies.

As former active members of the JLA, we Sustainers have been trained to give back as effective volunteers

and community leaders. The League asks its Sustainers to promote the development of women by being advisors, generous donors and mentors to the active membership. The Sustaining membership includes women who credit the League with providing the inspiration and training that have lead them to professional and community service successes. It is a membership rich with experience and collective wisdom that continues to multiply each year.

A Christmas Affair is 100% volunteer run and we are grateful to our members, donors, and supporters for the difference they are making in the Austin community. The Junior League of Austin’s current headquarters, at 5416 Parkcrest Dr., has been home to the League for decades. As the League’s membership has dramatically increased over the years, it is now time for the League to transition to a larger location to better serve Austin. The future headquarters, named the Community Impact Center, will not just be a place for League members but also a space utilized by local non-profits.

“I love the idea that we can use the Community Impact Center as a congregation point for multiple non-profits to come together and solve problems,” said JLA President Julie Hall.

The League plans to have a public groundbreaking at the new location, located on Bluffstone Cove in Northwest Austin, on January 18, 2018. “Once we break ground, we can start thinking past the building and continue to increase our impact in the community,” Hall explains. Breaking ground does not mean the work needed to bring the Community Impact Center to life is complete. The League still needs to secure interior design plans, and additional funding. Most of this work is done through the Capital Campaign, which is the League’s program designed to help transition the current headquarters to the Community Impact Center. While League members have donated to the Capital Campaign, contributions from the public are also needed to turn the Community Impact Center into a reality. Hall wants Austinites to know that the building is not solely for League members. The Community Impact Center is for the betterment of the entire Austin community. “It’s not just a building—it’s what’s happening inside the building,” said Hall.
