The CAPA staff is already gearing up for the holiday season. Yet, amongst the holiday cheer and

merriment, many CAPA families struggle to find the extra funds to provide presents for their children. CAPA understands the pressure the holidays can put on our families. We are calling on Holiday Heroes to help us ensure that each of these children has a present to open this holiday season.

Ways to become a Holiday Hero: Sponsor a family in need - we have their wish lists! Host a toy drive at your office or congregation. Donate unwrapped toys directly to the CAPA office.

Holiday Heroes do more than supply children with gifts; they help each of our families feel the joy and love of the holiday season. Thank you for your generosity!

My family is overwhelmed by the generosity and blessings you have given us this Christmas. I thank you with my heart and soul!

CAPA Supplies Backpacks to Over 200 Children

The Back to School season can be an exciting time of year, but with the excitement can come financial and emotional stress. Statistics estimate that parents spend an average of $576 for clothing and

supplies for elementary school students, $762 for middle school students and $1,223 for high school students. Affording school supplies on an already stretched-thin budget can weigh heavily on the hearts of parents. CAPA’s belief in the importance of children beginning the school year feeling excit-ed, prepared and capable of success was the driving force behind this year’s Back to School Bash.

Families lined up outside New Walnut Park Church, anxiously awaiting the doors to open for the second annual Back to School Bash on August 8th. The

gymnasium was filled with volunteers and area businesses hosting family games and activities tocelebrate the new school year. Yet, the most important reason many of these families rushed to the Back to School Bash was to ensure that their children would have essential school supplies.

The childrens’ smiles as they picked out their backpacks were matched by the expressions of gratitude from the parents standing beside them. They could breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their children were all set for their first day of school.

CAPA provided backpacks for over 200 elementary, middle school and high school children during the Back to School Bash. This accomplishment is due to your support. Each school supply collected, donation raised and hour volunteered helped a child in Jackson County begin the new school year with confidence.

Your support did more than provide school supplies.

It gave a child the confidence to succeed!

Community CornErCAPA VIA Volunteer Highlight: Leslie Tuttle

Puck booth during Missouri Maverick’sgames, helped with the HyVee Mother’s Day Diaper Drive and participated in the CAPA Independence St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

Yet, Leslie has done more than just give of her time at various events. She, along with her husband Frank, helped to envision and create CAPA’s lovable “Heart” and “Home” mascots!

“I realized that a mascot could take an organization to the next level, and it is great to be able to take on that personality and interact with the kids!”

Leslie’s dedication to the Child Abuse Prevention Association has paved the way for future CAPA VIAs. “Kids who have been abused are vulnerable, and it is important to give them the confidence that someone cares about them. Any small participation you have with this cause will help you see the value in doing more.”

I love volunteering with CAPA and all these young people who stand for such an important cause.

- Leslie Tuttle, CAPA VIA

“CAPA is fortunate to have many dedicated community members as volunteers,

helping us further our mission to prevent and treat child abuse. One community member who has gone above and beyond as a CAPA VIA star is Leslie Tuttle.

Leslie began her relationship with CAPA last year while working as Community Liason for Speaks Family Legacy Chapels. She attributes her former position at the Chapel to her increased involvement in community causes. “Speaks is so involved in the community, and I was fortunate to have fallen into my role there.”

Since becoming a CAPA VIA last year, Leslie has been a shining example of the impact one person can make on a community. She has been a staple at the CAPA Chuck-A-

Leslie (far left) with Mavericks’ mascot, Mac, CAPA “Heart” and “Home” mascots and UMKC MuMu chapter volunteers at Chuck-A-Puck for CAPA.
