Thank you for supporting our goal – we look forward to seeing you at the Christmas Craft Fair – December 13 th - 14 th . The Canyon Heights Nicaragua Student Committee Christmas Hampers It has become an annual tradition for Canyon Heights to assist North Shore Family Services in making Christmas a little brighter for some North Vancouver families with our Giving Tree. The Giving Tree will be put up in the front hallway during the last week of November. The tree is filled with tags colour-coded to our three families as well as green tags which are monetary donations to cover grocery gift cards for each family. The idea is to take a tag from the tree and fulfill that requirement – it might be a toy for a three-year old or a jacket for a teen, a pair of gloves for a mom or a scarf for a dad. Whatever tag you take, please purchase the item and bring it into the school, wrapped or unwrapped and place it in the appropriate hamper in the office. We must have the completed hampers to the Family Services depot by December 12 th . Thank you to Mrs. Lowe and her class, Ms. McKenna and our Library volunteers for all their help with this project. We very much appreciate the community support for this annual project as do the families whose Christmas is made a little happier through your generosity. Destination Conservation This year, Destination Conservation has about 40 children who have dedicated their Thursday lunch hour to continue

the work on environmental initiatives at Canyon Heights. Most of the children are in Grade 2, with new and

returning members from Grade 3 and 4. So far, the children’s interests have been towards reminding the community

about doing our part for drink recycling and litterless lunches. The first big project for our group is the Candy

Wrapper Campaign. We have been collecting candy wrappers since November 1st and will continue to collect up

until December 1st. The purpose of this campaign is to help community become more aware of how one festivity

(Hallowe’en) can generate a large amount of waste. Not only are we consuming items with no nutritional value, but

we are also creating a tremendous amount of garbage. Our message is not intended to put a damper on celebrations;

instead, our intention is to get people to be more mindful of the environmental ramifications and begin to think about

making “greener” choices.

WE Create Change Did you know that over 1,000,000,000 people live without access to fresh drinking water? Almost 80% of illnesses in

developing countries are linked to poor water and sanitation. The Grade 7s from the Free the Children committee are

taking part in the WE Create Change initiative.

In Canada, the penny is going out of circulation. It’s the perfect time to help get rid of all those pennies by donating

them. The goal is to provide clean water for 100, 000 people around the world.

2,500 pennies = $25 = Clean water for 1 person…for LIFE! From Tuesday, November 27th to Friday, November 30th we will be collecting your pennies at school. So look out

those penny jars, empty your piggy banks, and gather up all those copper maple leafs for our farewell party. Help us

create a big change with our small change.

Recycle an old laptop and help a school in Haiti Do you have a working laptop that you are ready to recycle? Maybe it can’t handle current programs anymore. It

might run windows 3.1. Or perhaps the CPU is slightly less powerful than a tired hamster on a treadmill? Please

consider donating it to help school children in Haiti.

Several years ago, BC teacher Kathy Koopman and her sister started the Ecole Ebenezer. Which is 100% non-profit,

entirely run and supported by a small army of fantastically dedicated volunteers and serve one of the most

impoverished communities in the Western World.

Your old working laptop that would otherwise be heading for the recycling centre or a landfill would make a world

of difference in these children’s education. The Koopman sisters will be making another visit to the school this

December and would gratefully bring any donated laptops with them on their upcoming journey.

To donate your old laptop, please see Mr. C in the Canyon Heights Library. You can also learn more about their

school at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ecole-Ebenezer/171350216236597

PLEASE BE SURE YOUR HARD DRIVE IS CLEARED OF ALL PERSONAL INFORMATION BEFORE DONATING

With the upcoming seasonal festivities, please do your

part by reducing waste (alternative ways to gift wrap),

reusing materials (gift bags, Christmas cookie tins), and

recycling (cardboard boxes, batteries). For more

information, please have a look at this link on Holiday
