Heralded wildlife pastelist LeslieDelgyer shares her compassion forendangered species and the wilder-ness that nurtures them in her soloexhibit, "The vanishings" at SwainGalleries in Plainfield.

Delgyer decries the loss of habitatthat forces wildlife to move andsearch for sustenance in a less hos-pitable place. Commenting on herpastel of a lynx in winter, she notesthat this animal was

not so long ago a familiar sight. Itshabitat as seen in my painting wasalready vanished. This cat hasmoved to higher country. Its rangeand numbers are shrinking becauseof development, land cultivation, hunters and fur trappers."

While she speaks of habitatdestruction and climate change, sheadds that "increases in humanpopulation" should be called into ac-count. "All of us inhabit this one, single Earth. We need to pay closerattention. I hope that paintings ofthese magnificent creatures willinspire people personally, beyondfund-raising, to help these animalssurvive and even thrive." Her pas-

tels include tigers, a cougar, polarbears, and a comical kangarooamong others.

Delgyer donates paintings and printsto wildlife protective organizationsand will donate a percentage of hersales from this exhibit to the Worldwildlife Fund. In the late 1980s, shewas commissioned by Prince Philipto paint for the World Wildlife Fundinternational stamp collection.

In the October 2009 issue of thePastel Journal's feature article onDelgyer, titled "Art and Conserva-

tion" she describes how she startswith the background, seeming to pre-figure her concerns about habitat. The piece notes that in her exhibitsshe always includes a paragraphabout the animals and their charac-teristics to attract more personalinterest. She visits to talk to childrenabout her work and heighten theirawareness.

Delgyer's early foray into petportraits led to a commission fromPresident and Mrs. Ronald Reagan.Eventually she was drawn to thewilder varieties. She is a graduateof the deCret School of Art inPlainfield where she studies withMarjorie Van Emburgh and DudleyV. duCret and later served as presi-dent of the board of trustees. Sheholds memberships in the Society ofAnimal Artists, Salmagundi Club andPastel Society of America, all inNYC; and in the NJ Pastel Society, the National Museum of Women inthe Arts in Washington, DC and theWorldwide Nature Artists Group.Shehas received a certificate ofspecial congressional recognition, certificate of recognition from theUS House of Representatives anda citation from the NJ Senate andGeneral Assembly.

Her most recent show was AudubonArtists 66th Annual Exhibition inNYC. Her work has been exhibitedthroughout the US including Vir-ginia, Arizona, Nevada, Ohio, Okla-homa, Utah, Florida, Wisconsin, Or-egon, Washington and WashingtonDC, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Cali-fornia, Massachusetts as well as NJand Canada. She has garnered ma-jor awards over three decades. Sheis listed in five "Who's Who" journalsand the Dictionary of Birds and Wild-life Painters. In 1996, Ms. Delgyerwas inducted into the NPHS AlumniHall of Fame.

Dear Alumni Association

Sorry but once again I will not beable to attend the Hall of FameDinner as I will be tied up that day.Ihope you have a good turnout.

However, I wanted to make youaware of something that should beof interest to anyone who has livedin the area for a long time. Just theother day my wife and I went to thePlainfield Library to see a historicalexhibit called "Lost But NotForgotten"about buildings that usedto stand in Plainfield but are nolonger there. The exhibit is verywell done. It is located in the lowerlevel of the library. It runs till Octo-ber 17th. Also spend some time atthe computer just inside the maindoor that continually shows old pic-tures of the area. This is also worth-while.

I need Hall of Fame Booklets from2008 and 2009 to keep my collec-tion up to date. Let me know whenyou have them and I will come overwith my money to pick them up.Also Also, I think I have a completecollection of the Newsletter. Letme know if you need copies of anyof them. I will be glad to help.

On behalf of theClass of 2009 I want to extend ourheartfelt gratitude for your generos-ity. The program was a huge suc-cess and we owe it all to your hardwork and commitment to our stu-dents. I was upset to find out that some ofyou did not receive a letter from usthanking you for your enormous giftof time, money and effort. We apolo-gize for the "postal issues" and hopethat you accept this letter in its place. For those of you that did receive theletter, a second 'thank-you' is welldeserved.

Dear Alumni,

Do you remember Winkie Coly? Shegraduated with my sister in 1946. Ithink she was a cheerleader. Shemarried a famous baseball player. Ithink it was Bobby Thompson but Iam not sure. I don't know how Iremembered this but my grandsoncollects baseball cards and I wastelling him abut it but I said shemarried Ted Williams. I always gotthe two mixed up. Wish I could findsomeone with a '46 yearbook andget a picture of her to show him.

Ruth,

You were right. Elaine "Winkie"Coley was a cheerleader, she wasa graduate of NPHS in 1946 andshe married Bobby Thomson, andher father owned The Cedar Bar(later to be known as "HarmonyStreet") on the corner of Somersetand Harmony Street

Tell your grandson that BobbyThomson became the most remem-bered baseball player for onehome run - "The shot heard roundthe world." It was 1951 and hishome run beat the Brooklyn Dodg-ers for the National League Pen-nant. There is a plaque byWatchung Lake commemoratingthat event, since he and "Winkie"lived in Watchung for a long time.He is currently living in SouthCarolina.

yard run for another score, helpingthe Canucks to a 14-13 lead.

On their next passion they neededjust five plays to get on the boardagain. Quarter Erick Frederickshooked up with - who else? - Greenon a 38-yard pass play to push thescore to 20-13. The two-point con-version put the lead at nine points.

The margin increased almost imme-diately when Hillside fumbled on theensuing series, the result of a smack-ing tackle by senior Mario Herrera.Demon Tyndell fell on the ball, andfive plays later Fredericks sneakedin from the 1: North Plainfield, 28-13.

Hillside would make it close in thefinal minutes, but North Plainfieldfinished the game taking a knee.

"The kids were so excited aboutplaying on the field, I think the bigthing was keeping them focused,"Lake said. "I don't know if that madeus win; I think that was effort. I thinkthey refused to let themselves down."

Hillside won the stat game, totaling

430 years of offense toNorth Plainfield's 223,but the only state thatmattered was the firstfinal score at the newKrausche Field.

"This win is tremen-dous," Lake added."Hillside is a very goodfootball team. This is avery, very good win forour kids."

Mike Passe, NPHS Class of ’96,who helped North Plainfield HighSchool win a Central Group II base-ball title in 1996, was honoredbrecently when he was inducted inFairleigh Dickinson’s Athletic Hallof Fame.

"There's no better feeling than beingrecognized and appreciated by theschool that you went to battle for,"Passe said.

Passe could have played scholar-ship ball on the Division II level, butsomething about FDU seemed right. It didn't hurt that high school team-mate Keith Gaub was going there,as well. They remain close all theseyears later. So much, that Gaub in-troduced Passe during the Hall ofFame ceremony. Several of theircollege classmates were in atten-dance, as well.

"The camaraderie, doing all the thingsteammates do, that's the best partabout being a collegiate athlete,"Passe said. "I rarely thought aboutnumbers. It's good that the recordskind of added up at the end of mycareer, but I was all about winning."

That said, his numbers were out-standing. Playing for FDU's Madi-son branch, Passe ended his careerranked second in career triples (15),third in single-season batting aver-age (.436) and fourth in all-timeRBI's (105). He was team MVP

and first-team All-Freedom Confer-ence as a Senior in 2000.

And he is fondly remembered as akey ingredient of North Plainfield's1996 baseball championship, the lastsectional title by any boys programat the school.

"People still talk about that team. It'sa great source of pride for all of us,"said Passe, who lives in Edison andteaches at Rahway Middle School."At the time, you're 18 and you don'treally think about it, you just go outthere and get it done, but when you'rein your early 30's and people are stilltalking about it, you realize it waspretty special."

From the NPHS Principal's DeskDecember 2009

Dear Alumni:

The leaves have fallen, our fall ath-letic season has come to an end andwinter practices have begun. Weare proud of the accolades our teamsand individual students have receivedduring the season.

On October 9, the Ribbon CuttingCeremony took place on our newlyrefurbished Upper Krausche Field. Our new field now hosts footballgames as well as soccer, field hockey, baseball and softball games. Begin-ning the process of applying to col-leges and gathering those recom-mendations for admissions is on theminds of our seniors. The under-classmen are knuckling down andstriving for academic excellence andbolstering those GPA’s. The facultyand staff are gearing up for anotherfun winter with all of the excitementand challenges that winter brings.

Our Varsity Boys’ Soccer Teammade it to the States as well as ourGirls’ Field Hockey Team. TheBoys’ Basketball Team is looking torepeat as Conference Champions

just as our football team won theThanksgiving Day game againstSouth Plainfield. The NPHS Cheer-leaders and Marching Band con-tinue with their winning traditionsand have brought home first andsecond place trophies from the nu-merous competitions they have beeninvolved in this year. The cheerlead-ers will be featured in a documen-tary series entit led “What isAmerica?” Please visit our websiteto read the news articles pertainingto them.

“Canuck Pride” is alive and stronghere at NPHS and I look forward tomeeting more alumni as the winterseason begins and we head indoorsfor athletics. Please feel free tocontact the school to find out howyou can assist today’s students asthey carry on the proud traditionsthat you all worked to create.
