The Art of Teaching with Digital Literacies Last April, Teachers College Reading and Writing Project held its first ever international institute focused on digital and media literacy. This institute focused on ways digital devices and applications can lift the level of reading and writing workshop teaching. Educators from six continents investigated how digital literacies can not only transform our classrooms but transform our teaching and our students’ learning. On this day, join us as we share some of the important insights around the work of this institute. Learn about tools that make the most impact and ways to support digital literacy skills by bringing digital texts into mini-lessons, read/video alouds, conferring, small group instruction, and more. We’ll note how digital literacies can help make your assessment easier and more efficient and how to get these literacies into the hands of your students so that the digital literacies in your classroom can be more student-run and led. Join us as we continue this powerful conversation around such an important topic in education today.

Audience PK-6 Presenter Kristy Johnson

Using Destiny, the library catalog, to support student instruction Teachers will explore the various features to the new system which can support their instruction. There will be demonstrations of how to write book reviews, access e-book collection for whole group instruction, find specific levels for book clubs, etc.

Audience PK-12 Presenter Kelly Conway and Joanna Eickenhorst

"Keep Calm and Tech On" Technology in the classroom – whether it's using Google Docs, Plickers, or Flipping the Classroom -- can be a daunting task. At this workshop, we'll go through a number of really interesting and engaging pieces of technology that teachers may or may not already know about. The goal will be to explore the technology and develop a plan of how to USE the technology IMMEDIATELY in their classroom. Enough time will be spent "playing" with the technology, so teachers are encouraged to attend this workshop with a colleague or a co-teacher as well.

Audience PK-12 Presenter Jen Gembala

Beginner Google This workshop will do a quick overview of helpful ways to use Google Apps in your classroom. Be prepared to leave with a few tidbits of each App that will help you make your classroom a bit more paperless. If you are new to Google or worried about trying things in your classroom, sign up! It will help relieve the stress and worry!

Audience PK-12 Presenter Jen Peterson/Tracey Reichen

The In’s and Out’s of Gmail

This session will focus on everything you wanted to know about how to operate Gmail.

Audience PK-12 Presenter Sarah Foster

Workshops below are held for only certain sessions

Chromed Classroom (Sessions 1 and 3 only) In this workshop we will explore a series of web-based resources which provide your students with the opportunity to communicate, collaborate, and create. You will walk away with several excellent resources you can use right away in your classroom and will help to crowd source a list of resources for your fellow teachers to use. Bring a willingness to try new things in this "sand box" time and, if you have them, a few resources to share.

Audience PK-12 Presenter Jon Bishop

Get Organized and Productive with the Cloud (Sessions 2 and 3 only)

Learn to use various apps, synced across multiples devices to be reminded, have your files stay in sync and get rid of paperwork.

Audience PK-12 Presenter Brett Gottheimer

Digital and Non-Digital Tools for Differentiated Discourse (Session 1 and 3 only) This workshop is designed for teachers to explore a variety of ways to promote student-to-student discussion in their classrooms. We will look at a few specific strategies and tools including the use of Google Classroom, Todaysmeet.com, classroom Twitter hashtags, as well as the use of station rotations and discussion back-channeling. Teachers will have time to think about how these strategies can help to personalize student learning and engage all students in a discussion.

Audience PK-12 Presenter Ruth Kidwell

Citizen Scientist Projects Using Apps (Sessions 1 and 3 only) Participants will be provided the link to a Teacher/Student Resource web site that provides all the materials needed to launch a student or classroom project that involves collecting data for the more than 1,000 Citizen Science projects globally. During the workshop, participants will have time to use/explore Weebly (free web page builder), Padlet (free bulletin board-type app), Wonderopolis (free site exploring all sorts of things people wonder about) as they pertain to Citizen Scientists projects. The final outcome is to tap into personal curiosities and participate in authentic data collection in the scientific community.

Audience PK-12 Presenter Marsha Jorgensen

Google Drive and Use of Google Apps (Session 1 and 2 only)

Organizing shared folders (portfolios). Use of Other Google Apps for Education (Docs, Slides, etc.)

Audience K-12 Presenters Session 1: Robin Nardini

Scratching the Surface of SCRATCH (Session 2 only) Scratch is an amazing web tool from MIT which is being used to teach students to code and so much more; it goes far beyond computer science and a technology lab! Come and learn how to use Scratch to develop stop animation videos, custom student or teacher presentations, music, voice-overs, math and science models, and so much more! You will learn, see, and create examples you can take straight back to your classroom to implement right away. Teachers, please be sure to bring your computers. You will be creating!

Talk Twitter to Me (Session 2 only)

Twitter is a powerful tool for professional networking and learning! Professional Warning: Twitter for PD is addictive!

Audience PK-12 Presenter Ruth Kidwell/Marsha Jorgensen

Increasing mathematical discourse in the classroom through the incorporation of problems, games and videos (Session 2 only)

Sources will be shared that can be used to get students talking about math. Bring your laptop as you will have time to play with different sites. If you have great sources, bring them to share with others as well. This will be a hands-on workshop, not a lecture style session.
