Each student spent the week with their Spires ‘buddy’ of a similar age, going into their lessons and spending break and lunch with them. The week was a huge success with both sets of students in terms of developing their understanding each other’s cultures. Many of the Spires buddies are now keen to set up a Chinese club after school and have even suggested that Chinese is put onto the school’s curriculum!

“My buddy taught me calligraphy. She told me that in China she has eight lessons a day between 7:30 and 16:30pm and has to do homework every day for three hours! They were all chattier and not as quite as thought. They are really nice people and I am going to really miss them. In some ways they are just like us.”

St Faith’s at Ash Prep School first House Music Competition 2015.

On a Thursday afternoon, Kerruish Hall was alive with the sound of music in St Faith’s first House Music Competition. All pupils from Year 1 to Year 6 took part and impressed all the staff with the high standard of their performances. More importantly, they also impressed our guest judge, Emma Ainslie. Emma, a former pupil at the school, is currently studying for a doctorate in Ethnomusicology at Cambridge University and also lectures in Music there. It was inspiring for our musical pupils to see what they might be able to achieve in the future. Emma even treated Year 6 to an impromptu

piano recital (after they had put away the benches) which left them speechless and that has NEVER happened before.

Returning to the competition, each house presented a short programme including two solos (older and younger), an ensemble item and a performance of the House song, ‘Down in the Jungle’. We were treated to some outstanding solo performances: in the younger category. Pupils sang and played the Piano, Harp, Clarinet, Guitar, Trumpet with confidence and style. Their collective performance , showed the versatility and skill of the musicians in our school. In the Ensemble performances we saw an even greater breadth of talent and it was particularly encouraging to see four pupils playing the ‘Cello after less than one term of lessons. Lastly, we enjoyed

different interpretations of the song ‘Down in the Jungle’. Sycamore produced some amazing percussive effects including stamping and lip-smacking. Ash were extremely well co-ordinated thanks to the talents of director, Bea Punt. Oak showed originality and flair in their arrangement including some solo parts, while Beech produced an exceptionally professional performance really showcasing the talents of their house.

The final results were very close indeed! Special thanks must go the exceptionally talented and hardworking Year 6 pupils who organised their house entries.

Hockey Awards at Kent College The Higgins Junior Award (girls 16-and-under) was won by LIZZIE NEAL of Kent College, Canterbury and Canterbury Hockey Club.

LIZZIE NEAL was selected for England last January and was involved in the five nation’s tournament. She was soon moved into the U-18 squad. She played in the school U-16 team that finished runners-up in the national indoor championship in December and played in the national league play-offs in Reading in March. Lizzie is good at cricket too playing for Kent U-15s last year after being talent spotted at nine years old. She was

“very surprised and overwhelmed”

at the award says mum Shirley. Like every other player, it seems goals are Lizzie’s memorable moments. She said: “I still think of playing for Kent College and winning the U-13 schools competition and scoring the winning goal. “I was too young to play for my club, Canterbury, which was a bit frustrating so I spent a season as a ball-girl. Then when I turned 15 I was allowed to play in my first national league match and scored against Olton and West Warwicks. Last season I was really proud at playing in the league play-offs at Reading. “I would like to say thank you to mum, coach Jen Wilson and Nick Clark of Kent College and my

sponsors Burgess Hodgson accountants and Gryphon for supporting me.” Lizzie added: “My ambition is to play in 2020 Olympics – maybe that’s a bit early, the one after - and to just carry on playing for Canterbury, win the league and when we go into European competition in Holland this year to win two matches at least.” Canterbury player-coach Jen Wilson says Lizzie “stands her ground week in week out” for Canterbury. “At 13 she was a ball-girl, unbelievably a year later she received her call-up to the training squad. Her recent selection for England U18 assessments is confirmation of a very bright future.” Says Kent College director of hockey Nick Clark:

“Her play is characterised by intense energy and commitment coupled with excellent ball control.”

Canterbury Festival is delighted to announce that Kent Refugee Action Network have agreed to work in partnership with the Festival as their LINK 2015 community connection. The aim of LINK is to generate connections between local communities and the wide variety of creative opportunities found in South East Kent.

KRAN, based at Canterbury Riverside, is an independent charity providing support to asylum seekers and refugees. Their dedicated team provide invaluable support and education for these young people, while seeking to advance the public’s education about the position of refugees and ethnic minorities in society. For KRAN one of their key objectives is to provide students with a varied programme of education. Canterbury Festival will be working alongside staff to deliver Arts Award to the students. This will ensure that creative projects and Arts Award can be achieved by students, alongside their core subjects for years to come.

Made in Kent will look to East Kent’s local talent to discover the very finest representatives of each of the genres (music, theatre, comedy, visual art and literature) and provide opportunities for them to both develop their skills and take part in the Canterbury Festival 2015 alongside the international programme.

Festival Foundation’s Young Musicians’ Bursary Competition. This popular competition

is now in its fifth year and provides excellent support to talented young musicians from East Kent. The competition has two categories, the juniors covering 12-14 years and the seniors covering 15-18 years. Applicants are encouraged to enter with either instrumental or vocal performances. The Senior Bursary winner will benefit from a very generous bursary award as well as becoming an ambassador of the Canterbury Festival and the finalists from the senior section and winner of the junior section will perform at the Foundation Bursary concert during the Festival in October.

As a passionate supporter of regional arts and culture, Canterbury Christ Church University is proud to be the five-year Partner and Principal Sponsor of the Canterbury Festival. The University is the number one choice for local people looking to study at university in Kent. Christ Church has just celebrated its 50th anniversary and, as a home to world-leading research and internationally recognised teaching in music, has just opened its newly refurbished St Gregory’s Centre for Music.

There are, without doubt, pros and cons to technology - I don’t remember how I coped without a mobile phone, but I also hate the thing for making me available all the time.

The internet has led to me watching less television, but what I do watch is far better quality because I make an effort to catch things on the BBC iPlayer, or Netflix. It means that I’m no longer stumbling across Open University Physics programmes late at night, but I can live with that. I get recommendations from friends on Facebook, check out a clip of the programme online, read about it on IMDB.com, and then after I’ve watched it I can find out what else the actors were in, which book the show was based on, download that to my eReader app, and go back to Facebook and tell everyone how much I enjoyed it. Wow. So much for setting the VHS recorder and then realising I’ve taped over my mum’s Eastenders.

In our house now we play more video games, but not the ones I grew up with - no endless hours of Frogger or PacMan, instead I get frustrated trying to get a medieval chap to climb walls and roofs while my children tut at my lack of skill with a joypad.

The children do their homework online via MyMaths or research gathered from Google. They email their work to themselves and print it out at school - gone are the days of blaming a hungry or destructive dog.

And in school there are interactive whiteboards, lessons taught using PowerPoint, Smartcards for buying lunch, automated telephone calls letting you know if your child hasn’t arrived in class. An amazing transformation from blackboards and Roger Red Hat reading books.

Where I teach at the University of Kent each teaching room is equipped with not only a computer, digital projector, and internet access as standard, but also a webcam aimed at the person teaching. This means that if I decide to use it I can record my entire lecture or seminar, upload it to the Uni website and make it available to current students or the public.

Yet despite all of this most of us are using the cutting edge technology in our homes with

iPads, SmartTVs, and so on, it’s often not at work, and sometimes not in school. Perhaps we should be lobbying for increased funding to schools so they can upgrade their systems. That way our children could have access to fibre broadband, or Google Glass, or wearable technology. Perhaps we should be trying to get all children a RaspberryPi, teaching them coding, and leading the way worldwide in technology and teaching. We have the technology, are we using it?

What do you think? Do we and our children have too much or not enough technology? Is your life better in the Digital Age? Let us know what you think - email me – [email protected] and we’ll print some of the responses.

Some Schools have recently embraced technology using New World Netcom and their excellent service and know-how; saving themselves hundreds / thousands of pounds when transferring their telephone systems over to a more user friendly and more up to date package. A bursar at one school said

“From a financial perspective we are delighted in the cost savings that New World have provided for the school in these days of very tight budgets”.

With money being such a very important part of any decision in schools these days it is beneficial to have companies like New World available so that new technology is not so financially out of reach.

The biggest impact a parent can have on their child’s education is to display a positive attitude and work in partnership with the school. Effective communication between teachers and parents will ensure home and school work together for the benefit of the child.

Home learning can take many forms; be that reading, spelling and multiplication and handwriting practice. Research around the topics studied - using the internet; visiting the library or places of interest. Reading

Home support with reading is very important. Reading regularly increases a child’s confidence and fluency.

Spellings

Help your child learn their spellings. The looks, cover, write, check method helps a child to remember to build confidence in spelling. Maths

Encourage mental maths by getting your child to add two numbers together in their head. Times Tables

Encourage your child to learn their times tables. Chant them forward and backwards. Learn them in and out of order. Ask them in the car or walking on the way to school.

How to………. Support your child’s learning at home

All these things will help to support your child’s learning in school.

Helpful Homework Habits

Helping your child at home • Work out the best time for your child to do their homework. • Find a peaceful, comfortable area for them to work away from distractions. • Provide a table and chair for your child. • Give them a healthy snack and drink (preferably water) before they start their homework. • Don’t do the homework but encourage and give guidance. • Praise them for working and trying hard.

Tips for Pupils

• Gather all the books and stationery before you start. • Have a drink and a healthy snack. • Turn off the T.V. and the computer. • Sit at a table in a quiet area. • Read and follow any instructions carefully. • Ask an adult for help if necessary. • Remember to give your homework your best effort just as you would at school. • When you have finished your homework check it carefully. • Make sure your completed homework is in your school bag ready for the next day. • Make sure you hand in your homework to your teacher when you get to school.

21st Century living can be demandingIn between juggling the school run, work and home life there is not much time to relax and sometimes we can feel jaded

We know releasing everyday stress helps us stay balanced and promotes good health, but how best to do this?Reiki is a safe, gentle, non-intrusive hands-on healing technique from Japan. It brings our energy system back into balance: releasing stress, leaving us feeling refreshed, energised, peaceful, focused and centered. Reiki works and balances on 4 levels:Physical: eases aches, pains and headaches, boosts energy levels and improves quality of sleep.Mental: after treatment the mind is calm and clear and thoughts are more ordered.Emotional: aids the gentle release of stuck emotions like anxiety, depression and grief.Spiritual: Reiki reconnects you with you and builds strong reserves to draw on.Life has its stresses and strains, Reiki helps us take them in our stride so things flow more smoothly. Rather than pushing on through why not try a Reiki treatment?

Dear Head Teacher

Welcome to the School News Magazine. The Magazine has been going for three years in Thanet and is taken by all the primary and secondary schools. We have expanded into Canterbury within the last few months and are looking to expand further across Kent. We are here to promote and publicise your school and the great work you’re doing.

The magazine comes out each month, except August, and features news from your schools – we ask that you email us a short press release, and ideally some photos. We want to share great school trips, visitors, sports and examinations results and any other good news that you have.

You may also notice that the magazine has general articles that we think will be of interest and perhaps some use to both schools and parents alike. We aim to cover useful topics like child health, reviews, recipes, craft ideas, topical issues, community interviews with local people and anything else that our readers would like to see. Please feel free to get in touch and tell us if there’s anything you’d like to see us cover.

The magazine is completely free, and all schools’ editorial is free too. The magazine covers its costs through selling advertising space. If you have an open day planned that you’d like advertised, or your PTA has an upcoming event then please do get in touch to find out more details on our special educational establishment rates.

About Us

Claire and John Turner saw that there was a gap between all the fantastic things that schools do and what gets reported. Claire has worked in and around schools for twelve years, mostly involved in sports coaching, and she’s a governor at a Ramsgate Primary school. John’s background is in advertising and local media. They have five children attending four different schools in the Thanet and Canterbury area.

We hope that you enjoy the magazine and that you’ll help us to share the good news about what a great job you’re doing at your school.

Best Wishes, John and Claire School News Team

We had a fantastic afternoon with the wonderful people at Kent Air Ambulance this week. We even got to see the Helicopter land. Did you know that our Air Ambulance has been going now for 25 years? I am sure everyone knows someone who has needed the support of the ambulance; I remember a friend from school had a nasty car accident and needed to be air lifted to London. He was gutted that he couldn’t actually remember being in the Helicopter. As a family we have always supported the

Air Ambulance charity, well with 4 boys who are typical boys, you never know.

As a company we are delighted to continue to support this worthy charity and are really pleased to be involved at the start of their new schools’ initiative. The idea is to let children know about the Air Ambulance and its uses whilst encouraging them to fundraise. We are looking forward to covering lots of stories about the wonderful work the Air Ambulance does and what the schools are doing to fundraise.

CREATIVITY BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

HAYWARD DESIGN & PRINT

3-4 Builders Square, Littlebourne, Canterbury, Kent CT3 1XU 01227 721 864 | hayward-design.co.uk

Do you want to reach parents in Thanet, Sandwich, Canterbury, Faversham, Herne Bay, and Whitstable?

We currently publish 34,000 copies of The School News Magazine which is mainly distributed directly through schools in the area. Our magazine is written with a 50:50 spread of adverts to content - this is not just about advertising, but about good quality content that attracts readers.

‘It is a great forum for all schools to communicate their strengths with parents and the outside community. It is also full of tips, advice and support for all parents; with news of what’s happening in the local community that benefits all parents and carers. The children also really enjoy reading the publication to look for a mention of their school and their friends’ schools. It helps with transition from infant

to junior and primary to secondary, with lots of positive information on all schools in the area. A sign of a good publication is that all the copies are taken home and that our spare copies also disappear quickly.’ John Letts, Headteacher
