PROGRAM

MUSIC DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Deciding what to program for this concert, I knew that I wanted to explore music which would compel us to go even deeper into our facility to express the emotional content of the music. I knew that 2014 was the 50 year anniversary of the Beatles coming to the United States. I knew that I loved Moses Hogan and the incredible power of his music. When Fred Peterbark began to make suggestions for pieces that would represent Hogan, it became obvious that even though the Spiritual in itself traces its roots centuries back, we could not ignore "modern" pioneers such as William Dawson (Ezekiel) and Jester Hairston (Hold On). We could not ignore representatives of what has become Gospel in Take My Hand, City Called Heaven, and True Light. I wanted to delve

Take My Hand, Precious Lord Precious Lord take my hand, Lead me on, Let me stand. I'm tired, I am weak, I am worn. Thru the storm, thru the night, Lead me on to the light. Take my hand Precious Lord, lead me home. When my way grows drear Precious Lord linger near When my life is almost gone. Hear my cry, Lord hear my call, Hold my hand, oh lest I fall. Take my hand Precious Lord, lead me home. When the darkness appears And the night draws near And the day is past and gone. At the river I stand, Guide my feet, Lord, Hold my hand, Take my hand Precious Lord, lead me home. Precious Lord take my hand, Lead me on, Let me stand. I'm tired, I am weak, I am worn. Thru the storm, thru the night, Lead me on to the light. Take my hand Precious Lord, lead me home.

City Called Heaven I am a poor pilgrim of sorrow And I'm left in this wide world, this wide world alone! Oh I ain't got no hope, got no hope for tomorrow I'm trying to make it, make heaven my home. Sometimes I'm tossed and I'm driven, Lord. Sometimes I just don't know which way to turn Oh I heard of a city, a city called heaven I'm trying to make it, make heaven my home.

deeper into the Spiritual, and I knew that as an ensemble we didn't have extensive experience with the genre of the Spiritual, so I trusted that with Fred's guidance and leadership, we would come to love these pieces and to do them justice. Thank you to Fred!

If we think about it, as the Beatles came to the U.S, people like Malcolm X and of course Martin Luther King were enlightening the population about the necessity of striving for equality. When Lincoln was doing the same about a hundred years before, the Spiritual was also a witness to this struggle. And the genre of the Spiritual was stronger than ever as the Beatles developed their own musical voice! Both currents were completely vital at the same time, even though we might associate the Beatles with higher popularity because of the media attention. It is the Spiritual however, which is arguably the most representative American music, and therefore I am excited for us to show this interaction in the arc of our program, a journey that will indeed rock your soul!
