COVER LEGEND.
CancerResearch
The recipients of the 1993 Awards granted by the AmericanAssociation for Cancer Research (AACR) are featured on thisissue's cover. The awards, which will be presented at the 84th
Annual Meeting of the Association, being held in Orlando,Florida, from May 19 to May 22, cover a wide range ofinvestigations. Two of the awards are being given to investigators who are in the early stages of their careers. The Seventeenth Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Foundation Award, which recognizes unusual advances in clinical cancer researchby a person who is under 51 years of age, is being awarded toWaun Ki Hong (upper left), Chief of Head and Neck Oncologyat the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center,Houston, Texas. Dr. Hong is being honored for his work indeveloping effective strategies for the treatment and prevention of epithelial aerodigestive neoplasms, including alternatives to laryngectomy and the use of 13-m-retinoic acid as atherapeutic agent. He has published 140 original papers and70 reviews and book chapters. He serves on many advisoryboards, committees, and editorial boards, including an appointment on the Editorial Board of Cancer Research. Hereceived the Milken Family Foundation Award in 1990 anda Presidential Citation from the American Society for Headand Neck Surgery in 1991.
The second award dedicated to a young investigator is theTwelfth Annual Cornelius P. Rhoads Memorial Award, presented to a person who is under 41 years of age. This awardwas established by an anonymous donor in memory of apioneer in cancer therapy and founder of the Sloan-KetteringInstitute in New York. This year's recipient is Tom Curran
(upper right), Head of the Department of Molecular Oncologyand Virology and Associate Director of the Roche Institute,Nutley, New Jersey. Dr. Curran has a distinguished record inmolecular oncology and is being honored for his discovery ofthe fos oncogene and the subsequent uncovering of its interaction with they*/«oncogene and their encoded proteins. Heis author or coauthor of 100 original articles and reviews andhas served on many study sections, committees, and editorialboards. He has presented lectures at meetings and participatedin the activities of the AACR, including membership on the
AACR Special Conferences Committee and the EditorialBoard of the AACR's journal on the molecular biology of
cancer, Cell Growth & Differentiation. In 1992, Dr. Curranreceived the Passano Foundation Young Scientist Award andthe First Glasgow University Tenovus Scotland Medal. Hehas also been a recipient of the Rota Levi Montalcini AwardLectureship and the Fidia Research Foundation Lectureship.
The Thirty-third Annual G. H. A. Clowes Memorial Award, established by the Eli Lilly Company to honor a formerResearch Director of the firm and one of the founders of theAACR, is being given to Stuart H. Yuspa (upper center), Chiefof the Laboratory of Cellular Carcinogenesis and TumorPromotion, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland. He is being honored for his use of the mouse skin model todefine cellular and molecular mechanisms of tumor promotion and to place this stage of cancer development within theperspective of the accumulation of successive genetic lesions. His work has been particularly notable in fostering a deeperunderstanding of the biology of the skin. He has been activein various cancer organizations, serving on many committeesand editorial boards. He was a member of the AACR Boardof Directors from 1988 to 1991 and is currently serving asCo-Chairperson to the Carcinogenesis Subcommittee of the1992-1993 AACR Program Committee. He also holds anappointment on the AACR Ad Hoc Committee for ScienceEducation. In addition, he is an Associate Editor of CancerResearch. Prior awards include the Elizabeth Miller MemorialLectureship and the Lila Gruber Memorial Cancer ResearchAward.
Excellence in therapeutic research is recognized by thepresentation of the Twelfth Annual Bruce F. Cain MemorialAward to Victor Ling (lower right). Head of the Division ofMolecular and Structural Biology, Ontario Cancer Center,Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This award was established by theWarner-Lambert Company in memory of one of its distinguished scientists who contributed to the design, synthesis, and evaluation of potential antitumor drugs. Dr. Ling is beinghonored for his seminal contributions to the mechanisms ofdrug resistance, particularly with regard to the role of P-glycoproteins. He joined the Ontario Cancer Institute in 1971and is now Professor of Medical Biophysics at the Universityof Toronto. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the AACR. He serves on numerous committees, studysections, and editorial boards, including Cancer Research. Hehas received many awards, such as the Gairtner Award, 1990;the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation KetteringPrize, 1991; and the Courvoisier Leadership Award, 1992.
The Second Annual American Cancer Society Award, theAACR's newest award, will be presented to Joseph F. Frau-meni, Jr. (lower left). Director of the Epidemiology and Bio-Statistics Program, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, Maryland. One of the most distinguished world authorities in thefields of epidemiology and biostatistics, Dr. Fraumeni is aproductive and influential contributor to our knowledge ofhuman tumor etiology. His dedication to cancer etiologyresearch covers a span of about 30 years in which he has madeseminal contributions to our understanding of the causes ofcancer, while at the same time guiding, inspiring, and helpingother epidemiologists throughout the world to conduct productive research. In 1969, together with Fred Li, he identifieda familial aggregation of cancers of different sites, especiallychildhood sarcomas and breast cancer, known today as theLi-Fraumeni syndrome. He has also served on many committees and editorial boards, including his current posts asAssociate Editor for both Cancer Research and Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
