The Florida 2014 Legislative Session concluded May 2, 2014 at 10:40 p.m. The legislature passed a historic $77.1 billion dollar budget for the state. Governor Scott has final authority to sign off on the bills. The following cancer bills were enrolled (passed) and as of publication, await final approval: HB 511 Cancer Control and Research: Reduces the membership of the Cancer Control and Research Advisory Council (CCRAB) and modifies the appointment process; requires CCRAB to collaborate with the Biomedical Research Advisory Council to formulate and annually review and recommend to the State Surgeon General a statewide research plan to be known as the “Florida Cancer Control and Research Plan”; CCRAB to develop and annually review a statewide “Florida Cancer Treatment Plan.” Click here for more information. HB 5203 Cancer Centers: Designates provisions as “Florida NCI Cancer Centers Act”; requires DOH to distribute funding to certain cancer centers; provides a formula for determination of allocations; provides criteria for designation of tiers for cancer centers. In fact, when patients workwith their health care providers theyare more successful in their quitattempts. A number of referralresources exist in Florida to supportproviders and their patients. Patientscan also be referred directly to TFFfor free help. Providers interested inreferring patients, can download andcomplete the fax referral formlocated here and fax it to: 1-866-688-7577. Once patients are in thesystem, Tobacco Free Florida canfollow up with them and help themovercome their nicotine addiction asa team.
