2006 • PACIFIC FOREST RALLY • 3

Welcome to the Pacific Forest Rally, round five of the Canadian Rally

Championship. As this event is also part of the Western Canadian

Rally Championship, the North American Cup,and qualifies for points

for NORPAC out-of-divisional points, it promises to attract more teams than any

other event in Western Canada.

We are very proud to announce this event will be broadcast across Canada

on the CHUM network which is part of the Bell Globemedia Group. Details of

the broadcast schedule will be posted at pacificforestrally.com.

Merritt is a fantastic community to host our event, with more businesses

and local individuals becoming involved each year. Our most sincere gratitude

to Mayor David Laird and the town council for their continued support of our

events. Again, this year, we have approval from town council to close a section

of the street at the Railyard Mall so that we are able to host the in-town portion

of the rally on Friday night.

We would like to thank the Railyard Mall and the Canadian Tire in Merritt

for allowing us to use their property as venues. Canadian Tire, this year, will be

hosting the service area for the event. We would also like to thank the Best

Western – Nicola Inn as this is the 6th year they have hosted our event as the

official hotel of the Pacific Forest Rally.

As always, a thank you needs to go to all the businesses that have placed

ads and sponsorships with our event. Please support those who support us.

This rally would not exist in Merritt without the dedicated efforts and co-oper-

ation from the Chamber of Commerce, all the local business, ranchers, local gov-

ernment agencies, local media,Tolko and Aspen Planers.

We must thank all the volunteers who help bring this event to life. The suc-

cess of this event is dependent on their continued dedication and sacrifice

every year. Thank you also to our family and friends that support those of us

who love this sport.

Rallying is a lot of fun to watch, but it is also a dangerous motorsport.

We’re happy to bring it to you, but with fun also come responsibility from you,

the spectator. Please make sure you read all of the spectator cautions in this

guide and abide by all rally officials’instructions. They are not there to ruin your

fun, but to ensure your well-being and that everyone goes home safely after

the event.

Have fun and enjoy the show!

Paul Westwick and Ken KwongPacific Forest Rally Organizers

To all Participants of Pacific Forest RallyWelcome to Merritt, the Country Music Capital of Canada!

The City of Merritt is very excited to once again be the location chosen for

the Pacific Forest Rally. We look forward to the opportunity to demonstrate our

hospitality to all the participants, sponsors and volunteers of this event.

The City of Merritt, which is situated in the heart of the Nicola Valley

includes the surrounding communities of Quilchena, Douglas Lake, Aspen

Grove, Lower and Upper Nicola. Merritt is host to the Merritt Mountain Music

Festival each July and the Nicola Valley Pro Rodeo and Fall Fair in September.

For sports and outdoor enthusiasts, the Nicola Valley provides a wide range of

activities for each season, such as; fishing, hiking, cross-country skiing, baseball,

hockey, swimming, horseback riding and bicycling. We also invite you to walk

our “Walk of Stars”.

Merritt has a bright future as a centrally located and accessible communi-

ty with an abundance of opportunities. The completion of WalMart, opening of

Liquidation World and a host of other exciting projects; some currently in plan-

ning stages and others such as Boston Pizza in construction stage, suggests a

fresh start to our diversification strategy addressing “Community Sustainability”.

We look forward to having you “Explore the Opportunities” and “Flourish

Under the Sun” at the Pacific Forest Rally, here in the heart of the Nicola Valley

and are delighted to add rallying to our calendar of events.

Have a great event!

4 • PACIFIC FOREST RALLY • 2006

Brief History of PFR

The Pacific Forest Rally (PFR) has more

than 40 years of motorsport history in

B.C. During the 1960s, this event was

held on and off around the Fraser Valley area.

During the 1970s and ‘80s, the rally became

famous as part of the Molson Canadian Rally

Championship—held around the

Hope/Chilliwack area.

Revived once again in 1999, PFR was

held in the Battle Creek roads of Cache Creek,

B.C., which featured challenging mountain

roads in B.C.’s central interior that tested the

abilities of the rally teams and their vehicles.

On its way to re-building its former sta-

tus, PFR was added as part of the Western

Canadian Rally Championship. Its addition

grew the regional calendar to six events

between Alberta and B.C.

As the event grew in size and popularity,

the demand for a larger venue and fresh road

systems made the City of Merritt a natural

choice. With the move to Merritt in 2001, the

city now hosted two performance events.

The supportive environment of the business-

es, landowners, ranchers and government

ministries has made for a higher quality

event, both for spectators and competitors.

This year’s PFR is round five of the

Canadian Rally Championship.The event also

qualifies for points towards the Western

Canadian Rally Championship, the North

American Cup and NORPAC out-of-divisional

points.

The 2006 PFR promises to be biggest

event in Western Canada, attracting teams

from both sides of the border in a battle for

points in up to four Championship Series.

Anatomy Of A Rally CarWhat makes this “real car” more real than your daily driver.

MOTOR:

Depending on class, engines are either left stock (prod. classes) or can bemodified to produce up to 400 HP (open class).

LIGHTING:

High intensity bulbs are usedand extra lights mounted on the

hood for night-time racing.

SAFETY:

The most important modifications are the roll cage and the 5-point harnesses. The rollcage also helps to stiffen the car.

SUSPENSION:

After safety, this is the most important modification. Oversized dampersand heavier springs are a must for soaking up bumps and providing

handling. The car is also raised from stock ride height.

WHEELS:

A rally tire has much stiffer sidewalls and a more aggressive tread than an all-season radial.Stronger rims are also used to avoid flats on the big rocks.

SKID PLATING:

Aircraft-grade aluminum and high-density plastic are used to protect the under-side from rocks.Without it the underside would quickly be beaten to a pulp.

Last year, Pemberton’s Norm LeBlanc and KeithMorison drifted their WRX through a corner at ActiveMountain stage to finish 3rd in the Canadian stand-ings and 1st at the Pacific Forest Rally.

The Shady Mechanic / Manic Driver is A. Swingler. While not engineering top secret things that we can’ttalk about here,A.Swingler spends the majority of hisfree time in a dark wet back alley developing andperfecting the Shady Mobile. A.Swingler is frequent-ly heard mumbling “What the H am I supposed to dowith all these extra nuts and bolts?”

The Shady Character is F.Bailet. F.Bailet has a superspecial light blue passport and is a certified interna-tional man of Shade. F.Bailet has skills. Internationallanguage skills, pace note skills, ninja skills, airportskills and putting on lug nuts backwards skills - justto name them all. Beware.

The Shade Mobile began life as a benign seafoamgreen family car. Specifically, a front wheel drive, automatic transmissioned 1993 1.8L Subaru Imprezasedan. After being smoked in constantly for 200,000KMS and then written off in an accident, the unas-suming Impreza has been reborn as the visceralShade Mobile. In the past 18 months the ShadeMobile has willingly received: the AWD running gearfrom a 2002 WRX,the brakes from a 2000 Impreza RS,the 220 hp engine from a 1992 Japanese turboLegacy, the transmission from a 1995 Japanese STI-RA, a roll cage & safety equipment from Rocket Rallyand, of course, the extremely Shady paint job byTremclad. We claim that the all stock Subaru partsShade Mobile has been engineered as the best bangfor the back rally car on continental North America.Maybe. Rocket Rally’s 1990 Legacy is pretty hot.

Afive-year deal between ATV produc-tions Ltd. and the CanadianAssociation of Rallysport (CARS) puts

automobile rallying back on Canadian televi-sion and new marketing muscle behind oneof Canada’s most exciting motorsports.

The agreement offers 26 half-hour seg-ments on the Canadian Rally Championshipto top-tier broadcasters in more than a dozenmajor markets across the country via theChum Limited television network.

ATV has obtained the marketing rightsfor the Championship as well as well as thefilming rights for each of the six events in theseries. The package includes two half-hourprograms and concludes with a season wrap-up.The 13-episode package will be repeatedonce for 26 broadcasts (see schedule below).

ATV has signed Subaru and YokohamaTire as signature sponsors.

“This is the kind of positive developmentthat will help us keep up the momentum theCanadian Rally Championship bas built overthe past decade,” said CARS president, PaulWestwick.” TV helps us to market the sport, and marketing helps us deliver quality TV.ATV is the right partner at the right time andwe’re pleased they [the sponsors] share ourpositive view of the future.”

According to Westwick, ATV’s produc-tions of the rally events will take a newapproach, with the episodes concentratingon the events’participants, who seem to defythe laws of physics as they hurl exotic compe-tition cars over impossible roads in some ofCanada’s most scenic spots. For the 2006 sea-son two competitors, Andrew Comrie-Picardand Jen Horsey, will host the productions.

Chum stations such as A-Channel andCity TV will schedule broadcasts in time slotsappropriate to their markets.

“Yokohama is glad to see The CanadianRally Championship return to television,”saidBrad Sherwin, Yokohama’s marketing andcommunications manger.“It is a very exciting

sport, one that we have long been a part of.Our support of the series, as well as driversAntoine L’Estage and Andrew Comrie-Picard,

allows us to showcase the performance andcontrol that Yokohama tires bring to any situ-ation; on the track or off, on dry, wet or whitesurfaces. We’re looking forward to an action-packed season begin broadcast this fall.”

For 50 years, the Canadian RallyChampionship has been a staple of theCanadian motorsport scene. One of thelongest-running national motorsport seriesin the country, it is managed by CARS andconsists of rally events from the shores of theAtlantic in the Gaspé region of Québec to theforest of B.C. CARS is affiliated with ASNCanada FIA.

Rallying is an exciting sport to watch, but it’s even more fun to take partin. There are several ways to do this,

depending on how much you want tospend and how fast you want to go.

Navigational RallyNavigational Rallying has been prac-

ticed in Canada since the early 1950’s,andtests both driver and navigator. Instead ofrunning flat-out,as in a performance rally, navigational events use the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) formula. In a TSD section, aparticular average speed is listed and theteams must drive as close as possible tothat speed. Checkpoints are placed atunknown locations in the TSD section andteams are penalized for passing themearly or late.

Average speeds are always withinposted speed limits, and the road is notclosed to the public, so teams must obeyall traffic laws. The route usually followsroads that are similar to those used in per-formance rallies: narrow winding forestryroads, ranch roads and other less-traveledroads. Route finding is generally not diffi-cult,but the navigator has a lot of work todo to keep the driver on time, especially inmid-winter events. There are classes fordifferent levels of navigational equip-ment,for novices, and for historic cars.TSDNovice workshops are regularly heldthroughout the year. Excellent way tobreak into the sport.

Performance RallyA performance rally team consists of

four parts: a driver, a co-driver (navigator),a car, and a service crew. The car can beany street-legal vehicle that was originallysold in Canada or the US. Safety equip-ment is then installed according to therules of the Canadian Association ofRallysport (CARS),and will be inspected atthe start of every event.

The driver and co-driver must both

be members of CARS-affiliated clubs, and apply for rally licenses. There are cur-rently two CARS clubs in BC: West CoastRally Association (WCRA) and IslandRallysport Club (IRC). Your rally licenseallows you to enter CARS events inCanada as well as SCCA events in the US,and also puts you in the national rallydatabase, so that you’re sure to getnotices of all upcoming performance ral-lies.Once you have your licenses and thecar is prepared, there’s still one morestep: getting a service crew.

The service crew is often unseen, butplays a vital role. Usually they are familymembers or friends, who come out to therallies to service the car between stages. Those jobs can range anywhere from fill-ing the fuel tank, changing the tires andmounting the driving lights,to changing agearbox or replacing bent suspensionarms, if the driver has had an unplannedencounter with the ditch.

Another form of performance rally-ing that is growing fast is Rally-Cross.This form of rallying involves racingagainst the clock in a secured and con-trolled area - usually on a dirt field or pri-vate roadway system. General rulescomply with CARS regulations. Safetyequipment includes an approved hel-met (Snell90 or Motorcycle) and 3-pointseatbelt. No roll-cage is required -although encouraged. WCRA offers upto 4 of these events a year. Day-licencesand memberships available for theseevents.Volunteering

Every rally relies on an army of volun-teers to make it happen, including radiooperators, timing personnel, spectatorcontrol. This is a good way to meet peoplein the sport, and find out more before tak-ing the plunge and preparing your owncar.
