Anesthesia for the OfficeL'Anesthésie en cabinet médicalPaul Draper, MDVancouver, BCPort Theatre Auditorium

OBJECTIVES:At the completion of this presentation, the participant should beable to:

(1) Describe the indications, contraindications, and side effectsof some of the commonly used classes of drugs used in conscioussedation including benzodiazepines, narcotics, and dissociativeagents. This objective also aims to update one’s knowledge baseregarding newer intravenous (IV) drugs and local anesthetics thathave become available.(2) Explain how to deal with some of the complications related tothe use of IV sedation and/or local anesthesia. This would entailan understanding of the appropriate use of drug-specific antago-nists and the consideration of secured airway protection.(3) Discuss and list the minimal requirements for monitoring pa-tients undergoing IV sedation, both intraoperatively and postopera-tively. This would also include an understanding of general post-operative discharge criteria.(4) Understand some of the criteria anesthesiologists use in as-sessing the suitability of patients to undergo procedures using IVsedation and/or local anesthesia.
