I I!OTIV;; PO'JZR NOTZS L-____________ ~ The O- C-O diesel-hydraulic engine , Uo . 1000, built by the llaschinenbau Kiel Akt i engesellschaft, of Kiel, C~rmany, "'hich has recently been under test by

Canadian National Railvlays , was turned over to Canadi an Pac i fic i1ail;-Jay at the beginning of July , for a two- month trial by that Company . The engine , which had been painted in Germany in CNR colours, was taken into AnGus Shops and repainted in the cpn diesel colour scheme of ~lroon and cream, though retaining its number 1000. Carry inc this numb~r, it Juplicates CPR DIOh class eneine 1000, vlhich has been scr.'lpped . The I,iaX engine is presE'nt].y in service at St . Luc Yard in Montreal , and it is understood that it will later be used in the Ottavola and Farnham areas , evidently in services where D4g class 4- 6- 0 steam l ocoIJotives are normalLy used .

The t"JQ 44- ton yard engines which have been ordered by Canadian Pacific Railuay for use at Portage, fo1an . and Y9rkton . Sask . \>Till be classified HS5(for ,IHydraulic S"ritcher ll ) , and carry road numbers ~ and~. These engines are being buil t by Canadian Locomotive Company, and are equipped for one- man operation .

In its present order for RDC cars from the Budd Company , Philadel­phia , Canadian Pacific :-taih·!ay has received UDC2 units nos. 9103 to 9109 , and RUC4 unit 9250 , up to the middl e of July .

Two road switchers , l~os . 6560 and 6561 , CPR class DS6g '-lere recently pla~<::ct in service on the Do:ninion At lantic RClilway , and it is r epo':"t.ed that t!ley carry DAR stencilling .

Central Vermont laill'lay No . 220, l ast of its class of 4-6- 0 steam lo comotives , lJuilt by American Locomotive Co . in 1915, ,,,,as ded­iCated on July 20th as part of a transportation exhibit at the museum at Shelburne, Vermont , by the Governor of Vermont .

Juring the month of June, compl ete dieselization became effective on the Grand Trunk (IleN England lines of the CNR) south of Island Pond, Vermont . Sixteen road diesels completed the replacement .

Canadian National Rail,,,ays has recently introduced an extensive renumbering progranune affecting many of its diesel l ocomotives , and many steam locomotives as well . This programme is presently being carried into effect . For the information of our members , a complete list of all diesel units owned by the CNR and its subsidiar ie s , follOWS, in the numerical order of the new system.

On t~e front platform, a waist- high pan el bet1."men two stanchions was provided behind the motorman , and a hinred drop- seat for the rilotorman was attached to t~1 is panel. Tile front exit door "lt/as pl aced at the extr eme end of the v estibule, inst ea~ of next to the body post on the 901's.

The method of construction differed f r om the 901 class . The 1200 ' s \lere built \Iith steel unc":.erfr ames and steel side s ills , and a body of \"lOod sheathed on the o">ltside with s~leet metal. A saving in ~..,eiLht \"las achieved r esulting in an averaee dead weic;ht of 4 5 , 000 pounds as compared "li th 53 , 460 pounds for the a l l - steel 901 s .

i n the front vestibule roof . Cars built by Otta,,'a did not have the letterboard carried in a continuous line around the front end as did the C. C. & F. cars . (see data sheet) . The 1200 class cars "lere fine looking , especially when new ' l In the writer' 5 opinion , the original singl e co l our scheme of liGht yellow with black and sil ver trim '''as much bett er suited to these cars than the later~ two - colour arranrement . They were clean- cut and business- like in appearance . In the drawinc. at the top of the data sheet , an attempt has been made to catch the eeneral impression of the car s .

Some of t he cars , when first received , had five pairs of cross s eats placed in the center of the car , and had smooth , ~In­position- type , floors . These innova tions were apparently unsucc­essful experiments which did not l ast long .

The cars \lere very successful and were used on prac"tically a ll parts of the systerJ including suburban lines . Rel at ivel y few, r..oHE:!Ver 1 "\.'lere permanently equipped for suburban service . Nos . 1 209 , idS , 1223 , 1229 and 1 257 \'Iere so equipped and used for a nu.mber of years on the Po inte- aux- Trembles and 30ut de l'Isle lines . Nos . 1 200 and 1 214 were used on the Cartierville line for a time . For a while during the f irst T.Jor l d ~.Jar , Ho .1209 was painted orange and operated repularly on the Lachine line . Lack of clearanc e in the \Iellington Street underpass precluded their use on the '"ellington line . In later years , those with K- 2j controll­ers were not perhlitted on the steep hills leading to the Uestmount upper level .

The l ast car of the series , No . 1324 , was used for a sample installation of fold.in~ pneUL'latic rear doors \'lith hinged bottom step. The rear bulkhead \'las r C':".loved . Later , nIl 1200 ' s were altered i n this fashion (1925- 26) . J urine 1924- 25 , a manually operated three- panel front door \"las installed on all these cars .

Like any t roup of cars , there were a few that were disliked by the crews and some that were special l y favoured . These diff­erences are often more imaEined than real . Nevertheless , for a time , lio . 1206 seemed to be plagued \rlith electrical trouble and was heartily disliked. The front vest ibule roof was charred and bl ackened by controller f ires and frequent flashing of the circuit breaker . On the other hand , No.1278 made a remarkabl e record of runnine daily on the ~lindsor-Nontreal Uest route for several !:lonths without t.he slightest defect or accident. Before the days of weekly inspect:i.on and preventive maintenance , t'1is was inde ed a note\'lorthy perfor::1ance .

In 1943 , the cross seat s were turned in a l ong itudinal pos­ition to increase the capacity for "';artime service . 'rhey were not chan[3:ed back to the orir inal position .

The series remained i ntact until 1952 when thirty cars were Hithdrawn . ,seventeen l'!ent in 1953 , six in 1954 , fifty- four in 1955 and the reraaining eic.hteen in 1956 . The last r un in passenger service was made by No . 1 220 on route 96 on the aftosrnoon of June 22nd , 1956 .

Though official details have . not been released to the press as yet, the Association has been informed that the t·lontreal rransportat ion Conunission will hold a transportation pageant on Labour iJay , 1.londay, September 3rd, 1956 .

The pageant will take the form of a parade of public transportation vehicles ,·"hich have operated in and around r·lontrea l; streetcars will comprise the rnajority of the vehicles. 'rhe pageant will ma rk the cessation of rail service on Saint Catherine and Jherbrooke streets, and certain feeder streets . Autobusses Nill take over ti1is operation on September 2nd .

Highlight of the pageant will be the first public exhibition of several early e lectric cars which the Comr.1ission is preservinc.: vlith the assistance of our Association . Chief among these will be :-Iontreal Street rlailv!ay ) 350 , ,1Rockat d

f·lontreal's oriGinal electric car . The Association believes that the l:Iontreal transportation systemfs possess ion of its ori~ina1 el ectric railway vehicle is unique on tile continent. 'rhe car i s underGoing extensive repairs in the r-rrc shops , and will operate under i ts O\'m pm',rer for the first time since it was r etired from service about 1914. The open platforms have been restored, and the terra- cotta and cream paint scheme which it will carry .. /ill duplicate , as clo sel~r as possible, t he colours in ",hich the " ... 1ocket " "las painted when it inaue;urated electric r a ilway service i n this city on ·,!ednesday, September 21, 1392.

The procession is expected to CQIili!1enCe at the new Harbour bus terminal, at St . Catherine and l:arbour streets, and operate west along Gt .Catherine street at least as far as the loop at Atwater . The procession ''lill take place in the after­noon, and the exact times ''lill be announced in the loca l press .

Other items in the procession "'lill be included in chronol oeical order. Tentative assignment of equipment for the procession indicates that tile lead Hill be taken by one of the electric f latca rs , used as a float , carrying the Montreal City Passenger :1ailNay horse- dravm omnibus, follO\ied by a simil ar car carrying the correspondine; horse- dra .. m sleigh . Following No .1046 " ill be a car of the 1325 class, whose 200 units ( jjos.1325-1 524i made them the largest single class of cars ever to be o\rmed by the I.Iontreal system . ilany of the se are still in operation , but nost of them will disappear after the replacc::ment of the St . Catherine street lines . The particvlar car has not , as yet , been selected. Next in line \Jill be t;le Birney car , l'Jo . 200 , a Brill product of 1919 , "thich ,,,,as purchased from .Jetroit United Rail",ays in 1923 by the rITC, a10n[.( Hit!l tilirtcen other similar nun its. No . 200 is the only Bir."lIJY car Q\'med by a transit system presently in Canada or the United S-cates , though several have fortunate l y been preserved in railway museums .

There will also be a two-man car of the 21 00- 2239 class, representing the typical St . Catherine route car since the introduction of these units in 1926- 23 . The ultimate devel-opment of the street car in ~~ntreal will be repr esented by one of the 3500 class streamlined cars. Al so in the procession will be the other observation cars , Iros . 2 , 3, and 4, fo r the accom­odation of guests . The nevI era in St . Catheri ne trans portat ion will be represented ')y three ne\,l autobusses, of the 3200 , 3300 and 2300 classes . The order and content of the pr ocession has not been finalized , and changes, omissions or addi tions to the foregO ing description may occur before September 3rd.
