Chers/chères collègues,

Au nom du comité organisateur, il me fait plaisir de vous souhaiter la bienvenue à Montréal pour la tenue du 5e symposium canadien annuel d'immunothérapie du cancer du CCIC.

Tout un programme nous attend! Cette année est marquée entre autre par la conférence commémorative Ralph Steinman, visant à honorer la mémoire du récipiendaire 2011 du Prix Nobel en Physiologie et Médecine originaire de Montréal. Dans le cadre de cette conférence commémorative, nous avons le privilège d’accueillir le Dr. Carl June (University of Pennsylvania), qui nous présentera ses travaux inspirants sur le transfert adoptif de lymphocytes T génétiquement modifiés pour le traitement de cancers hématologiques. À l’instar des éditions antérieures, plusieurs invités internationaux se joignent à nos chercheurs et étudiants canadiens, dont le Dr. Gianpietro Dotti (Baylor College of Medicine), le Dr. Sacha Gnjatic (Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center), le Dr. Daniel Speiser (Ludwig Center for Cancer Research, Lauzanne), le Dr. Thomas Gajewski, (University of Chicago) ainsi que le Dr. David Munn (Medical College of Georgia). Finalement, une présentation spéciale soulignant la « Journée de l'Immunologie » donnée par le distingué Dr. Tak Mak (University Health Network, Toronto) viendra clore cette 5e édition du symposium canadien annuel d'immunothérapie du cancer. On behalf of the organizing committee, it is a pleasure to welcome you to Montreal for the 5th Annual Canadian Cancer Immune Therapy Symposium.

What a program we have in front of us! This year is marked by the Ralph Steinman Memorial Lecture, which honors the memory of the 2011 Nobel laureate in Physiology and Medicine and Montreal born scientist. The Ralph Steinman Memorial Lecture will be given by Dr. Carl June (University of Pennsylvania), who will present his exciting and inspiring work on Adoptive transfer of gene-modified anti-tumor T cells in hematologic malignancies. Keeping with tradition, we are privileged to welcome a panel of international high-profile tumor immunologists to our symposium, such as Dr. Gianpietro Dotti (Baylor College of Medicine), Dr. Sacha Gnjatic (Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center), Dr. Daniel Speiser (Ludwig Center for Cancer Research, Lauzanne), Dr. Thomas Gajewski, (University of Chicago) and Dr. David Munn (Medical College of Georgia). Finally our meeting will end with a special “Day of Immunology” Keynote from Dr. Tak Mak (University Health Network, Toronto). Hope you enjoy it!

The Legacy of Ralph Steinman (1943-2011)

We are deeply saddened by the loss of an exceptional scientist but equally enriched by his outstanding legacy: - A major discovery. A cell with multiple ramifications (from the greek “δενδρον” or déndron, “tree”): The dendritic cell with a key role in the initiation of the immune response. - The inspiration for an entire generation of immunologists spread throughout the world, who are dedicated to the study of functional properties of dendritic cells. Ralph M. Steinman was born in Montreal in 1943 and obtained his B.Sc. from the Department of Biochemistry at McGill University. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1968, completed his residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital before joining the laboratory of Zanvil Cohn at Rockefeller University in 1970. He was named Henry G. Kunkel Professor, and led the C.H. Browne Center for Immunology and Immune Diseases and the Laboratory of Cellular Physiology and Immunology at Rockefeller University until September 2011. Ralph Steinman received many prestigious awards and honors throughout his career: The Gairdner International Award in 2003, followed by the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research in 2007, just to name a few. Ralph Steinman was ultimately awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 2011 for his work on the dendritic cell. Ralph Steinman sadly passed away two days before the official announcement in Stockholm, after a long battle of nearly five years against cancer where he even used his own dendritic cells in his treatment. This passionate scientist with an ardent desire to share was not given the time to show that “his” dendritic cells could save his life, but left us with the legacy, responsibility and challenge of saving the lives of others.

L’héritage de Ralph Steinman (1943-2011)

Nous sommes attristés par la perte d’un homme de science exceptionnel mais enrichis par son héritage tout aussi exceptionnel :

- Une découverte majeure. Une cellule aux ramifications multiples (du grec “δενδρον” ou déndron): la cellule dendritique dotée d’un rôle unique dans l’initiation de la réponse immunitaire.

- L’inspiration d’une génération entière d’immunologistes éparpillés dans le monde entier et entièrement dédiés à l’étude des propriétés fonctionnelles des cellules dendritiques.

Ralph M. Steinman est né à Montréal en 1943 et obtient son baccalauréat en biochimie à l’Université McGill. Diplômé en Médecine de l’Université Harvard en 1968, il complète sa résidence au Massachussetts General Hospital avant de rejoindre le laboratoire de Zanvil Cohn à l’Université Rockefeller en 1970. Nommé Professeur Henry G. Kunkel, il aura dirigé le Centre C.H. Browne d’immunologie et maladies immunitaires et le laboratoire d’Immunologie et physiologie cellulaire à l’Université Rockefeller jusqu’en Septembre 2011.

De nombreux prix et distinctions prestigieux lui seront décernés tout au long de sa carrière pour ne citer que le Prix international Gairdner en 2003, suivi du Prix Albert Lasker pour la Recherche Médicale fondamentale en 2007. Ralph Steinman est finalement couronné du Prix Nobel de Physiologie et de Médecine en 2011 pour ses travaux sur la cellule dendritique.

Ralph Steinman nous a malheureusement quitté deux jours avant l’annonce officielle à Stockholm, après une longue bataille de presque 5 ans contre le cancer à l’aide de ses propres cellules dendritiques. Cet homme de science passionné par la recherche et le désir de partager n’aura pas eu le temps de nous démontrer que « ses » cellules dendritiques pouvaient sauver sa vie mais nous a laissé l’héritage, la responsabilité et le défi de sauver celle des autres.
