    General Statements

Write a general statement about population densityin Canada relative to the following locations:

    Is higher

The density is higher The population density of parts of Canada along the

border of the United States is generally higher than

Canada as a whole. because trade with the United States is an

important part of our economy, so people tend to

    live in these areas.

    6/18

    General Statements

The population density of parts of Canada in the

Arctic circle is much lower than the populationdensity as a whole because the conditions in the

Arctic are harsh, the services are limited, as are the

    job opportunities.

    General Statements

The population density of the Agricultural parts of

Prairies is average when compared with Canada as awhole, although the less habitable Northern Prairies

is less dense than Canada as a whole. There are

many job opportunities and several major CMAs in

the south, while the North has harsher living

    conditions.

    General Statements

Although the population density of the Rocky

Mountains is higher than the population density ofthe Appalachians, the population density of the

mountainous regions of Canada is generally lower

than Canada as a whole. However, the Southern

Rock Mountains is fairly densely populated partially

because of tourism, retirees, and their beauty.

    General Statements

The population density of the Great Lakes and

Oceanic regions of Canada is generally higher than

our country average, except for in the Arctic, where

is lower, due to the harsh climate. The majority of

Canadas CMAs are located on major bodies of

water (trade, history, and development account for

    this).

  • 8/3/2019 Canadas Population Density Activity

    11/18

    General Statements

The population density of the major CMAs in

Canada is higher than average density in our country

because people live in much more densely

populated, service oriented communities, such as the

    GTA.

    Comparing Cities

Analyse the relationship between population andarea: Toronto vs. Montreal

Torontos population density is lower because

Torontos area is over three times larger than

Montreals area, while Montreals population is only

    half Torontos.

    ADD THE ANALYSIS and DISCUSSION

    Compare the REAL NUMBERS

Discuss ISSUES (Toronto is an easier city for new

immigrants --) language, more diverse community,

    more moderate winters.

    Comparing Cities

Analyse the relationship between population andarea: Victoria and Ottawa:

Ottawa has ten times the population of Victoria

(774,072 vs. 74,125), but at the same time, it is 145

times larger! (2,778 km square vs. 19 km square).

Ottawa is the political capital of our country and has

experienced major urban sprawl. Victoria is limited

in terms of its sprawl as it has bodies of water onmany of its borders.

    Comparing Cities

Analyse the relationship between population andarea: Edmonton vs. Vancouver:

Edmonton and Vancouver have fairly comparable

    populations (Edmonton is about 1/5th larger);

however, Edmonton is approximately 5 times larger

in terms of area (683.88 km square vs. 185.94 km

square). Edmonton is located in an area where

urban sprawl is possible; however, Vancouver issurrounded by mountains, making urban sprawl

    impossible.

    Comparing Cities

Why is the density of our country misleading? Our cities have dense populations; however, our

countries area is massive. As we live in the GTA

and most of our travels are within the Southern

Great Lakes region, we can forget how most of

Ontario isnt like this. Much of Canada is

challenging to live in terms of habitation due to

climate, remoteness, and service. We have thesecond largest country in the world, but have only

    the 35th largest population.

    Comparing Cities

Area with high density advantages: Better services, more taxes (for the government),

urban sprawl is limited, diverse population, more

    products available, convenience, competition (lower

    prices), etc

    Disadvantages:

Strain of the environment (pollution), bedbugs, infectious diseases can spread more easily, noise,

crime (?), hard to buy land/space, expensive,

    poverty, etc

    18/18

    Comparing Cities

Area with low density advantages: Land is cheaper, more space, better air quality, often

closer to natural/organic foods, fewer restrictions on

    your life, smaller community feel

    Disadvantages:

Fewer services, urban sprawl, fewer job

opportunities, fewer choices for consumers, takeslonger to get around, higher cost of goods

    (transportation), less diverse human population
