Canada & Afghanistan
The mission
• Canada is in Afghanistan to help Afghans rebuild their country as a stable, democratic and self-sufficient society. We are there with over 60 other nations and international organizations, at the request of the democratically-elected Afghan government and as part of a UN mandated, NATO-led mission.
Six objectives to the mission• Security• Basic services• Humanitarian• Borders• Institutions• Reconciliation
Security
• Build the capacity of Afghan National Security Force in Kandahar (Law & Order)
• Train and equip the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Police
• Build capacity in administration and logistical support of ANA and ANP
• Contribute to reformed justice and correctional systems
Basic services
• Deliver basic services to the region of Kandahar
• Provide functional literacy training and vocational skills
• Create jobs• Rehabilitate infrastructure
Humanitarian
• Clearing of landmines • Distribute food• Necessity packages to vulnerable people• Provide health care to women and children
(vaccinations: tetanus, measles and polio, therapeutic feeding for children)
Borders
• Contribute to dialogue between Afghanistan and Pakistani border officials
• Facilitate discussions of border officials• Training border and security officers• Provide critical infrastructure and equipment
National Institutions
• Provide financial support to election process• Work with other donors to mobilise resources
for elections commissions• Work with key international institutions to
build administrative capacity
Reconciliation
• Afghan led reconciliation to weaken insurgency
• Development of mechanisms that will encourage dialogue
• Improvement of capacity to communicate with citizens
• Strengthening of civil-society capacity to promote reconciliation
