Lady LibertyBy Mary L. Bushong

When you see things from far away, it's hard to visualize how big they really are. Have youever stood close to the Statue of Liberty? If you have, you know how tall it is. If you havenot, maybe this will help.

There are three parts to the statue. The first is the base. It is the shape of a star with elevenpoints. It used to be old Fort Wood. On top of the base is the pedestal. If you were to standnext to the base, it would be 154 feet to the top of the pedestal.

How tall is that? If you live in an apartment building, it would be more than ten stories high.If you live in a single story house, it would be taller than seven of your houses stacked oneon top of another.

The statue itself is almost as tall as the base and the pedestal put together, 151'1". LadyLiberty's head by itself is 17'3". That is almost as high as a house! Her nose is 4'6" long, andher eyes are each 2'6" long. If you were to walk up the 192 steps inside the pedestal, youwould have to climb 142 more to reach the crown of the statue.

There are 25 windows in Liberty's crown. They are a symbol of the number of gemstones found in the world. Theseven points or rays on the crown represent the continents and the seven seas. The tablet in her left hand has July 4,1776 written in Roman numerals. Under her feet is a broken shackle to show that Liberty crushes slavery.

When the statue was restored between 1984 and 1986, they made some changes. Perhaps the most important wasthe torch. It was designed to be lit from the outside, but it had been changed in 1892. During the renovation, theychanged it back to the way it was meant to be. The copper flame was covered with a layer of gold. Spot lights wereplaced to shine on the gold and making it glow even at night.

When they made the statue, they used between 62,000 and 179,000 pounds of copper for the outside. Each pieceof the copper is 3/32 of an inch thick. To support the copper, there is a frame of steel on the inside. To keep herstraight and strong, even during storms, they used 250,000 pounds of steel. When the wind blows 50 miles perhour, it will cause the whole statue to sway 3" from side to side.

In 1903, a brass plate was added to the inside of the base. On it were the words of the poem, "A New Colossus,"by Emma Lazarus. So many people associated it with the statue and the dream of liberty, that they belongedtogether. Even the island on which the statue stands, renamed Liberty Island.

When they dedicated the Statue of Liberty, she was taller than any other structure in the city. Now there are manybuildings which are taller than she is, but none of them are as well loved.

Blood VesselsBy Jennifer Kenny

Our circulatory system includes blood vessels, or a system of tubes, in our bodies. Did you know that if theseblood vessels were stretched out end-to-end, they would reach over 60,000 miles and could go around the earthmore than twice? These blood vessels make up a huge branching network in our bodies.

Simply put, there are three kinds of blood vessels. Arteries carry blood away from the heart. Veins carry bloodtoward the heart. Capillaries are connecting blood vessels. At any time in our body, about 3/4 of our blood is in ourveins, 1/5 is in our arteries, and 1/20 is in our capillaries.

Blood is the main transport fluid in our body. Today scientists know that the blood moves through our bloodvessels in one direction. It moves from arteries to capillaries to veins.

You already know that arteries carry blood away from the heart. Their walls are muscular and elastic because theyhave to hold up to the pressure of each heart beat. Veins, on the other hand, which return the blood to the heart, have thinner walls because the blood is under almost no pressure, sometimes even sluggish, as it goes back to theheart.

Sometimes blood vessels are jokingly called the plumbing in our body as they carry the blood with oxygen andnutrients to where the body needs it and take the wastes away. All the while, the very powerful pump, called theheart, is the force that keeps the blood moving throughout these vessels!

Courage and VictoryBy Beth Beutler

Prince Lucian of Tolland was angry. He had a strong desire to correct this injustice. His enemy, the ruler ofCapanavia, was holding Tolland citizens hostage on the outskirts of their country. Prince Lucian would have todedicate all his resources to saving them. The challenge was fierce. There was a huge mountain to climb and athick jungle to navigate before reaching the place where the hostages were held.

"The news is not good!" the Prince told his advisors. "However, we can prevail. Call together the militarydepartment and let's plan a surprise attack!"

"Yes, sir!" his subjects responded with enthusiasm.

At the meeting, the Prince selected ten of his most trusted leaders to develop a plan. They worked for hours untilthey agreed to the steps they should take. They planned to gather supplies and recruit soldiers within one week. Then, they would set out on their formal effort to rescue the hostages.

The men went back to their towns and announced the need for warriors. They received a greater response thanthey ever anticipated. Thousands gathered to help rescue their fellow citizens. By the time they all returned to thecapital city, there were 750,000 individuals ready to go.

Word leaked to the enemy about the large army congregating. It struck fear in their minds. "We can never surviveagainst that many warriors!" they feared. They worried and planned, but knew they were outnumbered. Ultimately, they decided to surrender the captives.

Knowing it would take days to get the message to Prince Lucian, the enemy selected two of the hostages to deliverthe treaty. Immediately, Hans Broweshen and his brother, Granda headed out. They carried a small pack of foodand clothing and a tent. For three days they hiked -- first through the jungle then toward the mountain.

"I wish we didn't have to climb that mountain," Hans said. "But there is no other way."

"Look!" Granda pointed to Hans. "What is up ahead?"

The brothers shielded their eyes and saw a huge group of people in the distance. It looked like their countrymen!Hans and Granda ran toward the group, waving a white flag.

When Hans and Granda got closer, they screamed, "They are surrendering! They are surrendering! We are safe butwant to come home!"

"Can we be sure?" Prince Lucian's subjects asked.

"Yes, Yes! They are afraid of all of you. Will you help us and the rest of the captives return?" Hans and Grandaexplained impatiently.

About 25 soldiers of the Tolland arms returned to Capanavia with Hans and Granda. The rest of the army campedout and waited. The smaller group made it to the outskirts of Capanavia within a day. They signed a treaty, gathered the captives and returned to their countrymen at the base of the mountain in record time. They had acelebration and headed home the next morning.

On the third day, they sang a great song of victory as they entered Tolland's gates. The rest of the citizens holleredwith glee as all of Tolland rejoiced at the safe return of the hostages.

Picking the Right PetBy Colleen Messina

So your family has agreed to get a pet. Now what? Finding the rightone is a big decision. If you watched Looney Tunes when you werelittle, you know their cast of wacky animal characters. Maybe one ofthem will give you a clue about what pet is right for you...in otherwords, one that won't make you looney.

Mickey Mouse was a well-mannered, cheerful rodent. If you likedMickey, maybe a rodent would suit you. Rodents include mice, hamsters, rats, gerbils, or guinea pigs. These small pets are popular formany reasons. They don't need to be housebroken, walked, or trained. They are portable, quiet, and inexpensive. They can be left alone anddon't take up much room. However, if you are afraid of mice, a rodentwould not work for you...no matter how much you liked Mickey.

One drawback about most rodents is that they do not live a longtime. A guinea pig lasts the longest and can live up to 8 years. Theoldest mouse on record was Fritzy, a British mouse who lived for 7years and 7 months, but most rodents only live for a couple of years. It is good to get these animals when they areabout 6 to 8 weeks old so you can tame them. And rodents can escape easily from their cages...and never return.

If rodents aren't your choice, there are many other pets to pick. If you liked Bugs Bunny, who happens to bethe most popular cartoon character of all time, rabbits might be for you. A rabbit won't be as sassy as Bugs, orwear gloves to eat carrots, but they are gentle friends. Rabbits can be kept in a cage, and they can even be trainedto use a litter box. They like to play, but if you let a bunny hop around unsupervised, he can dig holes in carpetsor chew things. And if you don't want hundreds-or at least lots-of baby bunnies, be sure that the females and themales are kept apart.

Bugs Bunny has many cousins, and there are over 40 breeds of rabbits to pick from. If you take care of yourrabbit, and if Elmer Fudd isn't tiptoeing around your house muttering about hunting wabbits, bunnies last a longtime. They can live from 8 to 10 years. One thing to keep in mind with a rabbit is that they do not generally getalong with dogs or cats. Dogs hunt rabbits, and cats think bunnies are yummy, so if you have these other pets, besure to keep your bunny safe.

Cats and dogs are the most popular pets, and if you are choosing between these two, it is good to know moreabout what each pet needs. Cats, like the slobbery, sneaky Sylvester of Looney Tunes, are much more independentthan dogs. Cats can be left alone and are quiet and loving. Cats can entertain themselves. Cats can live up to 15years, so if you are thinking about getting a real-life Sylvester, be sure that you are ready for a long termcommitment. The oldest cat on record was a tabby named Puss who lived to be thirty-six years old. There aremany breeds of cats, but your local animal shelter will also have a huge selection of loving pets that need homes.

One pet that would alert you about Sylvester's activities if you lived in a cartoon world would be wide-eyed,innocent Tweety. However, most birds in real life won't be able to say, "I tawt I taw a puddy tat...I did! I did!"Tweety and his feathered friends make great pets. Most birds would not be able to outsmart a drooling Sylvester, though, but birds are popular pets. They come in all shapes and sizes and with many talents. Some are greatsingers. Others are great talkers. Birds can be a great entertainment committee.

The easiest birds to care for are canaries, finches, and budgies. They are small and don't need constantattention. They are good birds for beginners and are not expensive. Larger, more expensive birds like Toucans,African Grey Parrots, and Macaws are more demanding but can learn lots of tricks. African Grey Parrots canlearn lots of words. These birds are expensive, though, and require a lot of attention to be happy.

Another pet that requires a lot of love and attention is a dog. Dogs have been our faithful friends for thousands

of years and have been domesticated since around 12,000 B.C. Dogs, even though they descended from wolves, are smarter than Wile E. Coyote, who spent his life in pursuit of a beeping, elusive Road Runner. But if you havea dog, you do not need to get all of your equipment from the Acme Corporation like Wile did.

Dogs do not need sling shots, booby-trapped ladders, or spiked balls, but they do require a lot of time andattention. A dog must be trained, housebroken, walked, and loved a lot. Having a puppy is a major commitmentas well as an expense. Dogs come in all shapes and sizes. They are wonderful friends and companions, but if yourfamily travels a lot, a dog might not be the right pet for you. Before you think about getting a dog, be sure to doyour homework so your whole family knows what to expect.

Rodents, bunnies, cats, birds, and dogs are common pets, but if you want something different, there are manykinds of exotic pets. Even Looney Tunes has some unusual characters like a Tasmanian devil named Taz. Now hemight be a huge challenge, so it is good he lives in TV land. In the real world, pot-bellied pigs, snakes, reptiles, and ferrets can be fun, but it is good to know more about them before you get one. Exotic pets are a lot of work.

Picking a pet is an important decision, and it is good to do your research to find the right one. If all else fails, get an easygoing goldfish. Then, you won't go looney because of a wrong choice.

Ingrid and the Minimum Wage Battle in GermanyBy Jennifer Kenny

Ingrid lives in the same town in Germany where she grew up. She loves the area in which she lives. She hastrained as a hairdresser and enjoys her job. Her one disappointment is that her salary isn't as much as she hoped. She finds it hard to pay for all the things she would like. She's not alone.

A salary is money paid for a person's work. A salary is usually used for a person's or a family's food, clothing, shelter, and activities or other purchases. Some countries have something called a minimum wage. The UnitedStates, for example, has a minimum wage. Basically, that means a person can't be paid any less than that amount ofmoney for an hour's work. In 1938, the United States set this basic amount to protect workers. Over the years, thatexact amount of money per hour has changed. Unlike the United States, though, Germany had never established aminimum wage in the past.

Instead, Germany had a different kind of system. Pay was decided on between unions and employers for differentkinds of work. Different standards were set for different kinds of jobs. That seemed to work for a long time. Thatwas because of a unique social welfare system that guaranteed people a certain income. Therefore, if a persondidn't make that much from a job, the government would make up the difference to make sure the person reachedat least a basic income level.

The economy has changed over the years in Germany, though. What worked in the past isn't working quite as wellanymore for some workers. Full-time workers often complain they are not making enough to live the way theywish. They complain that top executives make almost 40 times the pay of the average guy. In addition, socialbenefits have been cut back over time. Some collective bargaining agreements haven't been as strong as unionswould have liked. Many people in Germany can only get part-time work, have to work two jobs, or work undertough conditions.

Due to these changes, a debate has arisen about whether there's a need for an official minimum wage or not. Thechancellor has planned a minimum wage for certain groups that make as little as three euro an hour. This wouldinclude some in the building industry, some farm workers, and hairdressers like Ingrid.

While Ingrid is thrilled about the possibility of making more money, arguments go on around her. Those on theside of the minimum wage feel it's a first step and a good idea but the amount of the minimum wage needs to beeven higher. Others feel minimum wage will actually harm the economy and people. How? Some believe that overa million jobs will be lost if the minimum wage amounts to 7.50 euro per hour. Some companies simply couldn'tafford it or won't pay it. Would that mean they would sneak around to hire people willing to take less pay even if itis against the law? Would some businesses be forced to close? Experts have different opinions, but workers mayhave to wait and see. Thus, Germany moves forward with the plan and only time will tell if it will help cut poverty,or it will have a negative effect on the economy.

Children on the MayflowerBy Cindy Grigg

Caption: "Mayflower in Plymouth Harbor" by William Halsall,1882

The Mayflower was the name of the ship that brought the Pilgrimsto the New World. The Mayflower was a cargo ship. It was made tocarry cargo, not people. But it did carry 102 passengers and aboutthirty crew members from England to Massachusetts.

The Pilgrims wanted to be free to worship God in their own way.The Church of England wanted everyone to worship its way. A personcould not choose to join another church. The Pilgrims were looking for a better place to live and raise theirchildren with religious freedom. For a while they had lived in Holland, but it was strange to them. They couldnot own land there. They didn't want their children to grow up speaking the Dutch language. So they decided tocome to the New World.

They left England on September 16, 1620. About thirty children and teenagers were on the ship. Some ofthem came with their parents. Some came with other relatives. Some were servants. One new passenger wasborn on the voyage. His parents named him Oceanus.

At first, the children were probably very excited about starting on such a long journey! It probably seemedvery exciting to them! The long trip took sixty-six days. The children probably got very bored. They didn't havemuch room to move around. There was not a lot of fresh air. At night, there were a few lanterns for light. Somepeople had their Bibles for reading. In the daytime, there was work to be done. As food began to be scarce, people had the same meals over and over. Many of the passengers were seasick. Do you think they might haveasked, "Are we there yet?"

The Mayflower was pretty small - only about one hundred feet long, about the length of two trailer trucks. Itwasn't meant to carry so many passengers. Some of the passengers were supposed to travel on another ship calledthe Speedwell. That ship had problems and had to go back. Some of the Speedwell's passengers stayed inEngland. But some of them crowded onto the Mayflower.

The ship's lower decks were stacked from the floor to the ceiling with supplies. Not only did they need foodand supplies to last for the two months they were on the ship, but they also needed things to start their new life inthe New World. There were seeds for planting, tools, dishes, cooking utensils, and food. The men also broughtguns, armor, and gunpowder to kill game for food and for protection from the Indians. Each family brought onechest with clothing and family belongings. There was hardly any room to move.

At night, the children probably would lie awake and listen to the wind blowing, the canvas sails flapping, waves crashing, and the sailors shouting orders to one another.

Food was cooked on small stoves on the top outside deck. But most of the time the weather was so stormythat it was too dangerous to have a fire. The Mayflower was a wooden boat. One small spark might have causeda fire. So most of the time, the Pilgrims ate cold food. There were hard biscuits called hardtack, cheese, dried orsalted meat and fish, oatmeal, and dried peas and beans to eat.

The passengers stayed below the decks a lot of the time. During calmer weather, they could go above decksbut only if they stayed out of the way of the ship's crew. There were barrels of water and barrels of beer to drink. After a while, the water was no longer safe to drink. Everyone, even the children, had to drink beer. By the endof the voyage, the cheese became moldy. The bread got harder. People had to look for bugs in their food. Eventhe beer began to go sour.

About eighty people slept in a big room called the "t'ween deck." It was between the top outside deck and the

lower deck where food and supplies were stored. It was just a big open room with a low ceiling that was onlyabout five and a half feet high. There were some beds for the passengers to sleep in. Some people slept inhammocks. Some slept on straw on the floor. This is probably where most of the children slept.

There was a small boat called a "shallop" stored on the t'ween deck. Some people slept in the boat! Theshallop was used after they landed in the New World. Some of the men took the shallop to explore the coastlineand the land to see where the best place to build shelters would be.

There was no way for the people to take baths for the sixty-six days of the trip. Imagine how you would smellif you didn't take a bath or change your clothes for two months! They couldn't waste their precious drinkingwater for washing. If they wanted to wash, they would have had to wash with salty sea water. There were nobathrooms, either. Everyone used buckets, which they emptied overboard.

They had planned on coming to Virginia. But storms in the Atlantic blew the ship off course. For about thefirst month of the journey, they had calm weather and made good progress. But then one storm after anothertossed the small ship on the large stormy ocean. One of the strong storms caused a beam on the ship to crack.Captain Jones and his men were able to fix it, but the boat began to leak. The passengers were wet and cold. Many of them got sick, probably with pneumonia. A young boy named William Butten got sick and died justthree days before land was sighted. William was a servant to the ship's doctor. He was the only passenger to dieduring the voyage.

Because of the storms, the ship wound up in Massachusetts instead of Virginia. They landed on November 21,1620. Some books give the date as November 9, 1620. That's because people at that time used a differentcalendar than we use now. When the calendar was changed, twelve days were added. The climate inMassachusetts was cold. They had no shelter. The Mayflower stayed through the winter and the passengers livedon board.

How Does a Checking Account Work?By Patti Hutchsion

You know that it is not safe to keep a lot of money lying around. It isalso not safe to carry large amounts of money in your wallet. So whatshould you do with it? A smart thing to do is to open a checkingaccount. But just how does a checking account work?

You can open a checking account at a bank. It's easy to do. You depositmoney into your account. Then you can take it out again whenever youneed to.

The money you put into your account is called a deposit. The bank willgive you a special slip of paper to fill out when you make a deposit. Youcan put in cash. You can also put in checks from other people, like yourpaycheck or a check from your mom for your birthday. Once the moneyis in your account, you can spend it to pay bills, to buy groceries, or forother things you need.

When you take money out of your checking account, it is called a withdrawal. There are several ways to make awithdrawal. You can write a check. A check is a special paper that needs to be filled out in a special way. You canwrite a check to a company to pay a bill. You can also write one at the grocery store. You can write one to "cash"in order to get money out of your account to carry in your pocket.

You can also withdraw money with an ATM card. This is a special card your bank will give you. You can put it inan ATM (automatic teller machine). You will also have to punch in your PIN (personal identification number), andthe machine will give you the amount of cash you ask for. It will be taken out of your checking account.

Another way to get money out of your account is with a debit card. Sometimes this is the same card as your ATMcard. You can use it at a store, a gas station, and many other places. When you pay the cashier, you can swipe yourdebit card. You will have to put your PIN into the machine. The machine will tell your bank to take that amount ofmoney out of your account to pay the place where you made your purchases.

There is one thing you have to be careful of if you have a checking account. You can't withdraw more money thanyou have in your account. Say you have $50 in your checking account. You want to write a check for the electricbill. It is $59. You will need to put at least $9 more in your account so that the check will clear.

Clearing a check means that you have enough money in your account for the bank to take out to pay the person orcompany you wrote the check to. If there is not enough money to cover the check, it is called insufficient funds. The check will bounce. This means that your bank will not pay the person you wrote the check to. They will returnit to him or her.

If a check bounces, it causes all kinds of trouble. And it costs you all kinds of money. First, your bank will chargeyou a fee called an overdraft fee. This fee can be $15 or more. Also, if you wrote the check to a store or othercompany, they will charge you a fee. It is usually higher than the overdraft fee from your bank. You could end uppaying an extra $40 or more for writing that $59 check that bounced! Plus, you still have to come up with the $59to pay the bill.

Checking accounts are safe and convenient. But you have to learn how to use them. If you are careful and keepgood track of your deposits and withdrawals, you should have no problems. Remember, if you have questions, asksomeone at your bank. They will be happy to help you.

I'll Have What Sandwich is HavingBy Beth Beutler

I love sandwiches. There are so many you can make! My favorite sandwich ispeanut butter and banana. I like to use soft white bread. I spread creamy peanutbutter on one side. Then, I cut up half of a banana into thick slices. I lay the slicesout on one side of the bread. Then, I put the two slices together. Yum!

My mother likes tuna sandwiches. She likes to mix tuna with mayonnaise. Shelikes to use nine grain bread and add a little lettuce to it.

Dad likes tuna, also, but he mixes relish in as well as mayonnaise. If you ask me,I don't think that tastes very good. He also really likes Mom's chicken salad. When we have a chicken meal, Mom takes the leftover chicken and cuts it intosmall pieces. She cuts green grapes in half and chops up walnuts. She mixeseverything together with some mayonnaise and puts it into pita bread. It is verygood.

Sometimes we go out for subs, also called grinders or hoagies. What you call them depends upon where you live! These are usually six or twelve inches long. They remind you of "submarines," hence the nickname "subs." Youcan pick from various flavors of bread. I love all the choices these restaurants offer. You can get various cheeses, vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, or peppers. There are also many meats like ham, roast beef, sliced turkey, and salami. Sometimes I get a "mixed meat" sandwich and have one piece of each meat!

There is a story behind how sandwiches came to be. It is said that the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu, who lived in the 1700's, was heavily into gambling. Apparently, he was so focused on a particular round thatinstead of leaving play to go eat dinner, he requested that someone bring him some meat placed between two slicesof bread. The other gentlemen at the table followed his lead, having what "Sandwich" was having. There are otherpossible explanations, such as the common practice of workers carrying them, or perhaps some connection with theSandwich Islands, which are now the Hawaiian Islands.

Whatever the case, the sandwich has evolved into a "handy" way to enjoy a variety of food in a generally neatpackage. Go make your favorite sandwich today!
