The weather has been perfect and especially considering that I hear how hot Toronto has been and that Edmonton has never had rain. I sure hope you all had a great and healthy summer. Next week we will have a most enjoyable get together, our summer ALL WHITE luncheon. I hosted this event last year at my clubhouse and it turned out great. I look forward to seeing the different salads, and of course the ! Not everyone has an all white outfit so just wear something with white and/or floral and come to relax and celebrate summer . September is when we start back to our normal meetings once a month. Our dear Joan Lister has some wonderful speakers lined up on our up coming meeting; so much to look forward to. We are so lucky to have our Joan on board; she is a true PROBUS member, always a professional in every way. Also, in September, we will once again be bringing our library books out. We feel though that we are acquiring too many books and there is not enough room to store them so we will be asking everyone to take any that suits their interests. If anyone knows of an organization which would be able use these leftover books, would you let me know as we will need to get rid of at least half of the books. Thanks to all those who came out to the picnic at Peace Arch Park. I was not able to attend but I heard it was great as everyone enjoyed just sitting around chatting, etc. The great weather was a plus because last year was washed out. Cont. on page 2.. SPECIAL ACTIVITY:

PEACE ARCH PICNIC – July 31, 2019

On a perfect, partly sunny afternoon at the end of July, 27 Probians dined alfresco at the beautiful BC side of Peace Arch

Park.

It was wonderful to catch up with each other's lives in such a relaxed setting. Thank you to the ladies who supplied us with

the delicious raspberries and cookies for dessert!

Some members wanted to re-institute games and some preferred to sit and talk. This is something to discuss for future

picnics.

Looking forward to seeing all of you and more at our Summer Social in White set for August. Pls go to pages 10-11 for more

pictures

“A friend in need is a friend indeed." Remember if you know a member of PROBUS who is seriously ill or in the hospital or

has lost an immediate family member, please contact Sandra Hyams at [email protected]; tel. # 604-385-1907.

Luckily, it’s not been necessary to send cards this month.

A huge thank you to the ladies who make the beautiful cards I use. They are very much appreciated.

MINI-CLUB ACTIVITIES/REPORTS: Please be reminded that ONLY MEMBERS can attend Mini Club activities.

2ND CUP COFFEE CLUB

This month we met on my patio where there’s shade in the morning for relief from the blazing sun. It was quite quiet as

well.

CARD MAKING GROUP

Well, the summer warmth and sunshine seems to not have been enough to seduce the PROBUS Card Making Group from

their craft rooms. Thursday, August 8th we met at the home of Patti Wolczuk to "show and tell" our creative cards made

from last month’s stamp and cutting die. Once again, the diversity of what each of us create from the same stamp and the

same cutting die continues to inspire and amaze us all. Our hostess, Patti, got to select this month’s stamp, a cluster of sun

flowers. Pat Catton brought along a new cutting die of flowers that can be used as an edge cut on a card. We all got busy

stamping and using the cutting die selecting a variety of papers and colours to make a card or two for our next meeting.

Patti and Pat also gave us all a demonstration on using foils and a laminator to create some interesting shimmer and

colours on stamps and lettering. They both took a course a few months ago on the foil process and have been applying the

process to produce some beautiful cards. In addition to busy hands, we enjoyed tea, snacks and conversation. We meet

again Thursday, September 12th.

-Sheelah Urquhart- DINING DIVAS

Four Dining Divas went to Galini's this month. Good meals were had by all. Next month is at The Old Surrey House.

BOOKWORMS CLUB & FABS

The August book for both the FABS and Bookworms

was “The Girl Who Wrote on Silk” by Kelli Estes. The

story starts in the present time when Inara Erickson

discovers an intricately embroidered sleeve, hidden

under a stair, while having renovations done to a

home on an estate she has inherited on Orcas

Island. Fascinated by the sleeve she sets out to

discover its history.

The story then goes back to the late 1880s and we

learn the story of Mei Lien, a teenage girl of Chinese

ancestry, though born in the U.S.A. and how her

family was expelled from Seattle with so many

Chinese. How she survived and how she came to

embroider the sleeve is unveiled as Inara continues

her search.

Most members of both groups found the story very

enjoyable and they learned a lot about the history of

the Chinese on the west coast and especially the

Chinese Exclusion Act of 1883 in the U.S. and that

Canada had a similar act passed in 1923.

Though the ending was a bit contrived, most agree

that it was an excellent first novel for Kelli Estes and

will read more of her work.

DINING OUT

Taking advantage of the warm summer evening, we dined on the deck at Bacchus Bistro in Langley. We all enjoyed our

meals and several had enough for a second dinner at home. It’s a very popular place in the summer!

THE LUNCH BUNCH for August On a wonderful sunny summer day, we held

our annual 'Dejeuner en Blanc' in the garden

accompanied by a delightful assortment of

appetizers, and white wine to compliment our

all white outfits!

It was good to have an old PROBUS member,

Elenor Gardner, able to join us and celebrate

the lasting friendships that our Club has

enabled us all to form.

-Esmé Crump-

POKER QUEENS

Elizabeth Farkas played strategically and took risks by raising the pot a few

times.......it paid off and she captured the coveted crown to become our July queen.

Jackie won our ending game of "showdown poker." Another fun time.

TGIF

Our outing this month took us to luncheon at Morgan Creek Golf Course. We missed the company of a couple of ladies who were not feeling well but the 8 of us in attendance enjoyed a sunny view of the greens. The food was fresh and well presented. The most popular choice was the Prawn and Crab Croissant. There is designated parking for the restaurant so we did not have to jostle with the golfers. -Trudi Ekvall-

STANLEY THEATRE

One of our group has a ticket for sale for the Feb. 23, 2020 performance of “Noises Off,” a comedy. We have brunch in

Vancouver prior to the show & there’s usually time for some browsing/shopping on South Granville. This could be a chance

to experience the theatre for future participation. Please contact me if interested.

-Marylin Mainland-

WEDNESDAY WANDERERS We were a small group but the 5 of us thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at Washington Ave. Grill. The day was spectacular and a lovely breeze blew in the solarium. It was intimate and relaxing.

WALKIE-TALKIES SPECIAL WALK AT STEVESTON DYKE WALK

Eleven avid walkers spent time at Garry Point Park, visiting the Japanese Garden and the Fishermen’s Needle Memorial before walking the dyke in Steveston. Our weather was a bit “iffy” at the beginning, with wind and cloudy skies, but soon the sun broke through and it was warm and pleasant. Garry Point Park was a busy place as they were filming a production of “Nancy Drew Mysteries.” Along our walk we spotted some white-banded cattle feeding along the dyke. It turns out these “Oreo-looking” beef cattle are actually called Belted Galloways. We walked to the village for our lunch which we enjoyed on the patio of Kove Kitchen. It was wonderful to have Brenda join us and we were happy that Delores persisted in fighting tunnel traffic to finally catch up with us. A wonderful time was had by all. More pictures on page 12
