Your dream job…go get it!By Amy Lenhart, career counselor

What work environment do you prefer?

Do you like working with several people

or just a few? To define your preferred

work environment, research the company

or agency. Look up information on the

Internet, pay attention to the work culture

of the company, look at trade journals,

newspaper articles and visit the library as

important starters. You may even want to

make contact with people in the company

so you can identify how the company

operates. Also, don’t forget to look at the

smaller companies or agencies. Bigger

does not always mean better, especially in

today’s economy.

Make a list of your top 10 or 15 preferred

companies to work for and tweak your

resume for the various positions of interest.

Use all your job location tools: friends,

former co-workers, family, classified ads,

Internet postings and your career center job

postings. Need resume help? Not sure of

format – functional or chronological?

Career Services & Co-op will be hosting

resume writing workshops from 3 – 5 p.m.,

June 3 and 17 at SCC. Contact the Career

Services & Co-op office for room number.

Networking is vital in the job search. Many

times, we gain employment from making

contacts, or being referred by people we

know. Keep this in mind as you are

searching for a job. Utilize professional

organizations that you are a member of,

local job fairs, professors and any friend or

relative that may be able to help you make

a connection.

The grand finale…. selling yourself! This

means knowing yourself…your skills, your

strengths and being able to tell the

interviewer why you want a particular job.

Practice and be able to describe how you

would handle situations being presented to

you by the interviewer. This “behavioral

interview” is often used today to see if the

candidate can use critical thinking and

communication skills while telling about

work situations. Career Services & Co-op

offers “mock” interviews to assist you.

Students in the culinary arts program recently participatedin the annual “Taste of Collin County,” benefiting the NorthCollin County Habitat for Humanity. The event raised morethan $77,000 to help build houses for those in need.

The students gained real-world experience by staffing abooth where they sautéed and served Maryland-stylecrabcakes with cole slaw and lemon aïoli. Students wereinvolved in pre-preparation of the ingredients, cooking, plating, bussing, area cleanup and promotion. Some students alsoapprenticed with top chefs from the Dallas area in the“Mystery Basket” competition hosted by the Texas ChefsAssociation. In this event, teams were given a basket filledwith seafood, poultry and beef, and one hour to prepare atwo-course menu consisting of an appetizer and an entrée.

“This event provides more than a dozen students thechance to compete on two different levels: in the restaurantcategory, preparing a high-volume, cooked-to-orderappetizer judged by the public, and in the ‘Mystery Basket’event, assisting local chefs in an Iron Chef-style race againstthe clock while professional chefs evaluate their work,” saidBrooke Brantley, culinary arts professor.

CCCCD students assisting chefs during the competitioninclude Chris Yao, Ken Tadewald, Chris Moss, Doug Robbinsand Dan Thorne. Students staffing the CCCCD food boothwere Aurora Ahrens, Andrea Ivers, Lori Pewitt, Steve Plack,Peter Rager and Sonja Vandagriff.

Best lesson I’ve learned: Higher

education is the key to success, no

matter how long it takes.

The biggest challenge I’ve faced:

majoring in music. For a musician,

every day is a challenge, but my

biggest challenge is ahead of me.

These next couple of years, I will be

working very hard to prove to the

faculty of the Rudi E. Scheidt

School of Music at the University

of Memphis that I am truly worthy

of their Outstanding Music

Performance Scholarship for Voice.

My greatest influence was/is:

The people I have learned from

and been blessed by throughout

my life. And just to name a few . . .I

am very grateful to all the music

faculty and students of CCCCD

and especially professors Kathy and

Chris Morgan, David Alexander

and Dr. Allison for being my

driving force these past three years

[no matter how badly I play

piano]. I am also thankful for the

never-ending support of the

wonderful ladies in the New

Student Programs office: Jodi

Collins, Alicia Huppe, Lisabeth

Lassiter and Donna Okaro! As for

the students at Collin County . . .

peer influence can sometimes be

the most effective and all the

friends I have here at CCCCD have

only been a positive influence. I

want to say thanks to Ivan Garnica,

Elly Mercado and Rob Villareal

because you guys have been there

for me from the VERY beginning.

Best book I’ve ever read: I would

have to say the most memorable is

Bless me, Ultima!

The four people I’d most like to

meet: I would most like to meet

Patti Labelle and Gloria Estefan

and if I could go back in time I

would LOVE to meet Tito Puente

and Celia Cruz!

I’m motivated by: the Lord who

strengthens me.

Best honors I’ve received: Rudi E.

Scheidt School of Music,

Outstanding Music Performance

Scholarship for Voice

Career goals: I want to finish my

BA in Music Education and then

begin graduate school for vocal

performance. I plan to perform

and ultimately become an amazing

voice teacher.

I’m most proud of: I am proud of

setting and reaching the goals that I

set for myself, and most proud of

the hard work it has taken to get

me to each one of them.

Career Services and Cooperative Work Experience

(CS&CWE) recently held their annual awards ceremony

to recognize a few outstanding participants.

The Faculty Coordinator of the Year award went to

Warner Richeson, professor of computer-aided drafting

and design. Richeson has spent four years as a Co-op

faculty coordinator, providing academic supervision in

the work experience for more than 43 students. Ann

Beheler, executive director/dean of engineering

technology, said,“He is extremely talented as a professor,

and he brings phenomenal professional experience to

the classroom while also being warm and approachable

by the students.”

The Employer of the Year award went to The

Renaissance Richardson Hotel. Brian Inman, assistant

general manager and director of food & beverage

services, attended the ceremony to represent the hotel.

The hotel has been in partnership with the

Hotel/Restaurant Management and Culinary Arts

programs at CCCCD as well as hiring students for Co-

op work experiences. The Renaissance Hotel exemplifies

the qualities that make an employer an outstanding Co-

op mentor. Karen Musa, professor of culinary arts, said,

“They have been willing to take students with no prior

lodging experience and train them. The hotel is a

wonderful starting point for our hospitality or

foodservice majors.”

Lance Ellis, a business management major, received

the Co-op Student of the Year award. Ellis participated

in Co-op in summer 2003 and worked for the Agape

International Church in Plano, establishing a youth

program. Ellis’ co-op faculty coordinator Russell Kunz,

professor of quality control, said, “I have had the

pleasure of being asked to critique his presentations in

other related courses and I have been witness to his work

at his place of employment. I can assure you that he has

approached all of his assignments with remarkable

enthusiasm.”

Amy Dickerson, a hospitality management student,

and Sherilynn Lai, a computer information systems

student received Special Recognition certificates from

faculty coordinators who commended them for

excellent work this term in Co-op.
