GO KARTING

It may not have the allure or the history of Wembley but on a wet Saturday lunch-time in Kent, Milton Keynes was the place on everbody’s lips. Yes, at the third attempt the Campion Karting Team had made it through to the National Finals. How sweet it felt after the bitter disappointment of missing out by just one point two years ago. The Team, Jonathan Seekings, Pat Kiely and Oscar Cooke had really taken the day seriously even to the extent of going to the track to practiSe on the Friday night in the rain. How useful this turned out to be as Pat used all his experience to find the grip that the other teams failed to find when he roared to victory in our first race. Then as a light drizzle set in Campion finished their next 5 heats in either 4th or 5th meaning that we were confident that we would be there or thereabouts when the final scores were announced at the end. Such scenes of jubilation greeted the announcement from our large, travelling, loyal, support consisting of parents, grandparents and Carleton Shafe who had made sure that Pat arrived at the track on time by going round his house at 5:30 in the morning! Such dedication was rewarded when he had a ride in the Teacher’s race, yes I still remembered how bad I felt after my go two year’s ago, and showed the rest of us how easy it is to spin a gokart time and time again! So onwards and upwards to Milton Keynes Daytona track for the practice sessions on Saturday March 31st with the finals the next day April 1st , no joke, honestly. So look out for the report in the first newsletter after Easter to see how our intrepid Band of Brothers fare against the cream of the country’s Karting talent! Mr Stevens

SENIOR SKI TRIP In the February Half term 32 boys and 4 members of staff made the trip to Sugarloaf Mountain, Boston in the USA. The trip was a roaring success with all of the travelling party enjoying excellent skiing conditions and brilliant hosting thanks to our American Ski reps. Despite the sunny conditions, temperatures at times dropped as low as -20 degrees, testing conditions for even the most experienced of skiers! Great strides were made by all pupils, with even the beginner group experiencing the full height of the mountain by the end of the trip. All in all a great trip, special thanks to Mr Mansell and Mrs Hills for the efforts in organising the trip, and to the pupils for their exemplary behaviour throughout the trip. Photos Mr N Jones

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILATION

Lent is traditionally a time when we as Catholics look inwards and seek to reconcile ourselves with God. As we make Lenten promises and look to do more for one another, we also look at our own misgivings and how we can put them right. It if often said that we now live in an unforgiving world. At the time of writing Chelsea FC are again looking for a new manager – their 8th in 9 years! The owner Mr Abramovich seems a most unforgiving man, never willing to accept mistakes, or giving them the opportunity to accept wrongdoing and make amends. At school, I was taught the old adage, “its not the winning or losing but the taking part that counts.” Nowadays, this could be replaced somewhere along these lines of: “It’s not whether you win or lose but how you place the blame!”

I don’t envy whoever eventually succeeds Andre Villas-Boas as Chelsea’s new manager, as winning seems to be the order of the day and the prospect of losing is not really a viable consideration when money is at stake. Some football fans are more than passionate about the game. They hold high expectations of their team’s players and are equally unforgiving when their players fail to deliver the desired result or performance.

The great joys of Christianity and Lent in particular are that we have the chance to take a spiritual MOT – unburdening ourselves of the clutter that hinders us along the path to discipleship. The greatest way to do this is through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. God is merciful and always willing to forgive us of our wrongdoing, the things that are sapping us of energy, wearing us down, can all be unloaded by going to confession.

At The Campion School, every child is being given the opportunity to go to confession and take part in a reconciliation service over the next two weeks. I encourage you to lead by example, even if it’s been a long time since you last confessed; take the step this Lent with your child and experience the sense of release and love that God will shed upon you.

YEAR 8 FRENCH TRIP TO SWITZERLAND

On Friday, 24th March 39 students left Campion by coach for the annual French trip to Morgins. Upon arrival students had lunch and then completed an orientation exercise around the village of Morgins. Ski equipment was fitted and Year 8 were quick to get to bed after a long journey getting to Switzerland. On the first day the students were excited to start their ski lessons and quickly took to the new sport. The dry ski slope lessons proved invaluable and certainly saved some time on the piste. Although it was a rather cloudy start on the first day the students were blessed with glorious sunshine and good skiing conditions for the rest of the week. Everyone made great improvements throughout the trip and by the end of the week all students were able to ski down the mountain to the very bottom. It was a pleasure to see the students enjoying themselves and trying hard in their lessons. The jumps proved particularly popular and it was great fun to see the students following their instructors and trying to improve on their last jump.

The French lessons were particularly successful and students really enjoyed using what they learnt with their teacher to talk to local villagers around the town. All students gained a lot from having a native speaker teach them intensively for the week and it will certainly be useful for lessons in school. The students themselves were surprised at how much they already knew and were able to put into practice and they became a lot less self-conscious about speaking French with each other and in the town.

The evenings were filled with activities such as the night walk, team games, sledging and snow sculpturing and this left little time for the boys to complete their French homework given by their French teacher!

It was a very successful trip and the boys were as always, a credit to the school, trying hard in everything they did and helping each other in ski and French lessons. I am sure they will have very fond memories of the trip and many will wish to carry on learning to ski in future years. Photos are available on the school website.
