YEAR 9 ART AND ENGLISH CROSS-CURRICULAR COMPETITION SHERLOCK HOLMES

All Year 9 students were invited to take part in the ‘Sherlock Holmes’ reading challenge and were asked to read the text The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The purpose of this task was to assist with their understanding of 19th century literature and give them a taster for Year 10 and the prescribed text ‘Sign of Four.’ The nature of the cross curricular activity was to introduce

students to a new genre and be creative about what they are reading. The first part of the challenge was to design a new front cover for the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles, based on their creative interpretation of reading the text. The following boys have successfully had their work displayed along the English corridor after it was judged to be a high standard. Liam Brennan, James Barker, Liam Campbell, Lloyd Domingo, Timi Ogunrin, Joseph Hogan-O'Neill, Jake Barness, Joshi Rajkumar, Piers Belcher, Danny Gallagher, Jack Caulfield Ross, Ben Gilloway Smith, Michael O'Brien, Manhal Khamies, Samuel Nazareth, Alfie Trew, Igor Gwiazdowski, Andrew Devitt, Manuel Dogbatse, Nathanael Adeniran, Jimmy Lanfear, Elijah Pisani-O'Sullivan, Frankie Austen

Ready for Part 2? Year 9 will shortly receive information about

the second part of the reading challenge which they will need

to complete during the Easter holidays. Please keep reading

the text and enjoy.

YEAR 9 ART TRIP I thoroughly enjoyed the Art trip to the Horniman Museum and thought it helped my studies, as well as being fun and interesting. I particularly liked the sketchbooks we were given as they let us draw what caught our eye. The museum was also very good as it let us touch and try on various masks and gave us lots of information on them. Andrew Devitt I think that the Art trip we went on to the Horniman museum was very good and both fun and educational. It was good because we got to sketch around the museum. We also go to try on some masks which have been around for hundreds of years, which are valuable and shouldn’t be touched normally – but we were allowed to. We learnt the history of the masks and what they were used for and what they were made from. Overall it was a fun and educational trip and I would recommend it to next year’s Year 9. Start your regular practice routine today, if you have not already done so. It is only 10 minutes a day for grades 1-3. How about 7.30 in the morning before you catch the bus? NATIONAL GALLERY ART TRIP

On the 9th February the Year 11,12 and 13 Art groups visited the National Gallery, which is one of the most viewed art museums in the world and houses over 2,300 paintings. Whilst we were there we made sketches of several paintings to develop our drawing skills. We created a more tonal sketch, a line drawing and a third using a mixture of these two approaches. The trip was helpful because it meant that I could look for paintings and artists which I can use during the next project and develop my drawing techniques. Moreover it was a valuable opportunity to view the works of Art first hand, which I enjoyed and to discover more about the methods of painters from the 13th-19th centuries. It was both an interesting and educational trip to London which presented me with an opportunity to discover more about Western-European Art and culture. Thank you to Miss Bunce for organising this opportunity.

Do you shop on-line? Did you know you can raise money for the school without costing you a single penny? By using the easyfundraising.org.uk website and supporting Campion School PA you can raise money each time you buy something. How does it work? Say you want to buy a pair of shoes from John Lewis. Rather than going to the John Lewis website you first go to easyfundraising.org.uk From the easyfundraising website, click through to John Lewis to make your purchase. This tells John Lewis you came from easyfundraising. The price of the shoes is exactly the same. That’s it! Getting Started Go to http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/find-a-cause/ and search for Campion School PA. Once found create your free account. You can then start shopping. You can download a donation reminder from the website if you wish or if you have an apple device you can download an app. But don’t worry you can still use the service without these. How much money is raised? Normally this is done as a percentage and varies depending on the retailer. For example at Amazon you can earn up to 1.5% of your purchase. Every retailer is different (you can see what each retailer offers once you have your free account). There are 55,000 retailers that you can use including Sainsburys, Game, Dominos Pizza, Marks and Spencer, Hobbycraft, last-minute.com, The London Eye .......

SILENT AUCTION

The Parents’ Association has had the idea of running a silent auction during the school’s annual Sports Day & Garden Party to

help raise funds for the school. In order to determine if this would be a feasible/viable fund raising activity to pursue we need

to be able to quantify the types of items or services we can auction, examples are as below:

Are you a hairdresser - could you donate a free cut & blow dry?

Are you a beautician – could you donate a free beauty treatment, nails painted, massage etc?

Are you a gardener – would you be willing to tidy up someone’s garden?

Would you be willing to do some ironing for someone, or walk their dogs?

Do you have a signed ball or shirt you may wish to pass on?

Do you work anywhere that could donate a prize, cinema tickets, theatre tickets, activity centres, restaurants?

Other ideas would include: MOTs, Dog Grooming, Driving Lessons, Golf Rounds

The list is endless…………….

If you have a skill or service you are will to provide/offer free of charge that we can auction at the annual Garden Party could you please contact Lucy Parham on [email protected]

SATURDAY, 30TH APRIL

The Campion School’s sixth fundraising walk for the Teenage Cancer Trust takes place on Saturday, 30th April. This year’s twenty mile route starts from Trinity Gardens outside Tower Hill station at approx. 10 am. The shorter walk (seven miles) starts from the grounds of St Thomas’ Hospital on the south bank of the Thames, opposite the Houses of Parliament, at approx. 1.15 pm. Both distances involve crossing a lot of bridges – perhaps a bridge too far? And both will finish at The Ledger Building, Canary Wharf, where you will be able to collect your well-earned certificate and relax and socialise with fellow walkers. Entry to this event costs just £15 (adults)/£10 (concessions) and includes a drink/pastry at the start and a t-shirt. If you would like to join us on the walk, please complete an entry form and return it to me at the school, together with a cheque made payable to ‘The Campion School’, by no later than MONDAY, 11TH APRIL. Please note: this is our final deadline for ordering t-shirts. We cannot guarantee being able to supply a t-shirt to anyone who enters after that date but the cost of entry will remain the same. We look forward to seeing all of our regular walkers again. Your loyal and steadfast support of this event is very much appreciated! We also hope to welcome many new parents, staff, students and friends of the school. See you at the Bridges! Caroline Meehan on behalf of Hit the Road Committee
