Issue 22.10 Tuesday, 14th May 2019 CAMPION NEWS On Saturday 4 th May, students, parents, staff and friends of The Campion School - both past and present - took part in the ninth Hit the Road walk to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of Jack Chester and Mohamed Noor. This year we saw our biggest number of entries ever, with 380 people signing up to do the full 20 miles, 10 miles or even shorter distances for children as young as three years old and other people who just wanted to be part of the day. It was fantasc to see families and groups of friends all geng together again when, for some, it is the only occasion in the year when they meet up. This years walk started in Regents Park and took us through the park, across Primrose Hill, Hampstead Heath and Highgate and then followed the path of a disused railway line to Finsbury Park, where we met up with the support team and the walkers who were doing the shorter route. Having lived in London all of my life, these were parts that I had never visited before and really enjoyed seeing, as did our walkers. It was prey hilly though, parcularly the hill at Highgate Cemetery, but warnings had been issued and so I accept no responsibility!! At Parliament Hill Fields and Kenwood House, it was worth it to have the view across London. From Finsbury Park we went along the New River to Clissold Park in Stoke Newington. However, aſter a lovely sunny but cold morning, the rain started and then the hail came. Mainly showers though and it could have been much worse. Honestly! At one point, I couldnt see any other bright orange t-shirts, which had been all around me for all of the walk, and then the sun came out again and everyone took off their jackets!! The walk then connued through Clapton and into Springfield Park and down to the River Lea, which we followed all the way to Limehouse Basin. It took us through Hackney Wick and past the London Stadium where West Ham were playing and we lost some walkers who had to go and support their team for the last home game of the season. What a lively part of the walk that was with bars and music blaring out and then the cheering from West Ham fans and Im forever blowing bubbles”. Finally the route took us to Canary Wharf and across the familiar bridge and into The Ledger Building for a drink and food. Another successful walk over, the money has been coming in. Over £7000 has been raised so far on our Just Giving page hps://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/hiheroad2019 and, in addion, there have been some individual pages set up and also, many of the walkers will have collected money using paper sponsor forms. There will also be money from the entry fees when the t-shirts have been paid for. We would like to offer our thanks to the following companies who donated drinks, pastries, chocolate and other goodies to keep our walkers going: Waitrose and Aldi in Upminster, Bidvest Foods and H&J Foods. We are also extremely grateful to our loyal support team who braved the cold to transport supplies and cheer on our walkers. Next year is our tenth walk and we need to make it even more special, although, I am not sure how, at the moment. Any ideas that you have for the day will be gratefully received via email [email protected]. We cant promise to act on your suggeson as some people will say Central London and others prefer the outskirts of London. Some like the canals and rivers and others prefer roads. The one thing we do know is that the walk will be on SATURDAY 2ND MAY 2020 so please put this date in your diary now! Dont forget the Hit the Road Facebook Page. CAMPION NEWS

On Saturday 4th May, students, parents, staff and friends of The Campion School - both past and present - took part in the ninth

Hit the Road walk to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust in memory of Jack Chester and Mohamed Noor. This year we

saw our biggest number of entries ever, with 380 people signing up to do the full 20 miles, 10 miles or even shorter distances

for children as young as three years old and other people who just wanted to be part of the day. It was fantastic to see families

and groups of friends all getting together again when, for some, it is the only occasion in the year when they meet up.

This year’s walk started in Regents Park and took us through the park, across Primrose Hill, Hampstead Heath and Highgate and

then followed the path of a disused railway line to Finsbury Park, where we met up with the support team and the walkers who

were doing the shorter route. Having lived in London all of my life, these were parts that I had never visited before and really

enjoyed seeing, as did our walkers. It was pretty hilly though, particularly the hill at Highgate Cemetery, but warnings had been

issued and so I accept no responsibility!! At Parliament Hill Fields and Kenwood House, it was worth it to have the view across

London.

From Finsbury Park we went along the New River to Clissold Park in Stoke Newington. However, after a lovely sunny but cold

morning, the rain started and then the hail came. Mainly showers though and it could have been much worse. Honestly!

At one point, I couldn’t see any other bright orange t-shirts, which had been all around me for all of the walk, and then the sun

came out again and everyone took off their jackets!!

The walk then continued through Clapton and into Springfield Park and down to the River Lea, which we followed all the way to

Limehouse Basin. It took us through Hackney Wick and past the London Stadium where West Ham were playing and we lost

some walkers who had to go and support their team for the last home game of the season. What a lively part of the walk that

was with bars and music blaring out and then the cheering from West Ham fans and “I’m forever blowing bubbles”. Finally the

route took us to Canary Wharf and across the familiar bridge and into The Ledger Building for a drink and food.

Another successful walk over, the money has been coming in. Over £7000 has been raised so far on our Just Giving page

also, many of the walkers will have collected money using paper sponsor forms. There will also be money from the entry fees

when the t-shirts have been paid for.

loyal support team who braved the cold to transport supplies and cheer on our walkers.

YEAR 8 SKI TRIP IN MARCH

The Year 8 Ski Trip was very enjoyable for everyone. It began with an 18 hour journey by coach and ferry to Morgans, Switzerland. We left school at 6 pm on the Friday and arrived at the hotel at 10.30 am the next day.

When we arrived we got all of our equipment fitted. The next day we had half a day of skiing and then we had French lessons. The French lessons were different to our school lessons as we sometimes went into the village to buy things.

We could not ski on the Monday as it was too windy for any of the lifts to open but, on Wednesday, we had a full day of skiing and my group skied to the French wall, which is where France goes into Switzerland. The weather was mainly cold and snowy.

In the evening, we did sledging, a quiz and many more games. During the sledging, Miss Peters sledded into Finley. We also went on a night hike where we walked around the forest and looked at the different stars. I really enjoyed all of the afternoon activities such as; the cardboard box game and the sledging.

The food was also really good but there was a lot of cheese!

The best thing about the trip was the skiing because we learnt new skills and had lots of fun.

On the Friday, we did our normal day but we only had half of the French lessons as we had to leave at 6 pm. We arrived back at school at 11 am on Saturday.

I would recommend this as a great trip where you are more sociable and you can learn more skills in French and skiing. Lucas Rocknean and Carter Harris

ROYAL DRAWING SCHOOL LIFE DRAWING POD

A group of our Year 12 and 13 students took part in a five-week drawing course, with professional tutors and models from the prestigious Royal Drawing School. They all achieved remarkable results and the tutors were amazed at the standard of their work and their attitudes to their studies. I was extremely proud of their mature approach to this and with the work they produced. We hope to work with the Royal Drawing School again in the future. Well done! BUSINESS TALK

On Wednesday, 10th April, Business and Economics students in Year 12 and MAble students in Years 9 and 10 were fortunate enough to attend a talk by Valeria Locatelli, Audit Director at M & G Investments in London. Valeria spoke at length about the problems she had faced during her career in business, in particular, how she overcame the challenges of being different to the norm in her industry.

In particular, her core message was that determination and work ethic were vital for success in any field. Outside of her work life, she passionately supports a number of Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives, as well as volunteering her time at a local hospital to provide caring words for patients. A truly remarkable businesswoman and an inspiration for all students!

WHAT ARE ‘COUNTY LINES’?

Children as young as 12 are being put in danger by criminals who are taking advantage of how vulnerable these young people are.

Criminal exploitation is also known as 'county lines' and is when gangs and organised crime networks exploit children to sell drugs. Often these children are made to travel across counties, and they use dedicated mobile phone ‘lines’ to supply drugs.

THE SCHOLA’S TRIP TO PARLIAMENT

On Wednesday, 13th April 2019, selected members of the Schola were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to sing in the prestigious Houses of Parliament, accompanied by Mr Devor, Mr Wright, Mr Nichol, Mr Williams, Headmaster, Mrs McKenna and Mr Vaughan.

In preparation for this upcoming event, Mr Devor and the Schola attended regular rehearsals which enabled us to reach our full potential.

Our party travelled to Westminster on the London Underground and we arrived in good time to allow us a tour of the historic Parliament building before our concert. Unfortunately, all our sharp instruments were taken during the vigorous security checks. These items consisted of our compasses and our scissors and because of the recent rioting the security was incredibly tight. The tour was taken by Canon Pat of the Chapel and included us watching a live debate in the House of Lords. Soon afterwards we were taken down into the Chapel. After arranging ourselves into position according to vocal range we were promptly met by Bishop Alan and Monsignor Kevin of Brentwood Cathedral who gave us warm words of encouragement.

We performed several hymns and sung three separate beautiful pieces under the watchful eye of Mr Devor who led us all with his conducting. One of our favourite pieces was the Celtic Journey Blessing composed by Mr Wright and included a wonderful solo by Joseph Williams. After enjoying the Mass, we made our way back to school via an exit through the grand Westminster Hall further taking note of the names that were engraved into the floor.

We all enjoyed our day at Parliament and felt great privilege to have had the opportunity to represent our Schola and our school.

How to be a Christian Voice in the Modern World

On Tuesday, 26th March we were privileged to welcome Lord Alton to our

school. He is an ex-pupil of Campion, a prominent Liberal MP and now a

member of the House of Lords. He shared with us his experiences in

visiting countries where people’s human rights are not respected because

of their race, gender, religion or political beliefs. He encouraged us to

take our responsibilities for the suffering of others seriously and

suggested that we write to ambassadors to express our support for those

who are oppressed.

In the afternoon we were addressed by the organisation ‘Catholic Voices’

who again encouraged us to think about our need to speak up for our

beliefs on a range of issues and how to organise our thoughts into clear

and persuasive arguments. Overall, we felt we were enabled to express

our views effectively and take our responsibilities as citizens of the world

seriously.

Catholic Voices is a project

which began in the UK in

2010 to improve the

Church’s representation in

the media.

From one generation to the next

Jordan Pavey’s (13FoE) great grandfather,

Mr Peter Worth, was Head of English when

The Campion School first opened in 1962.

Mr Worth inspired Lord Alton with his love

of English, recommending books, which

later inspired Lord Alton to take English for

A Level.

Jordan and Lord Alton were able to discuss

and share fond memories of Mr Worth and

the lasting influence he had in their lives.
