NATURISM CAMPING IN THE SPIRIT OF TRADITIONALCROATIAN TOURISMNaturism in Croatia has a long tradition. It is believed that itstarted on the island o Rab during the 1930s. Thes story goesthat Dr Richard Ehrmann rom Vienna, the first president o theInternational Naturist Federation, proclaimed Rajsku beach anaturist beach back then. Subsequently, in August 1936, the firstto swim naked on the same island were Britain's King Edward VIIIand his beloved, the American Wallis Simpson. In the ollowingdecades, naturist campsites have sprung up all along the Croatiancoast.

Thus Croatia became the first European country to open its doorsto lovers o naturism; those who see themselves as lovers o alie spent in harmony with nature, extolling health and recreationin a way so as to return to nature and recapture our naturalequality. Today it is regarded by naturists as an ideal way o lie,

and a liestyle. Croatia has the third-largest number o naturistcampsites in Europe, with about 30,000 places, the larger numbero which are in Istria and the Kvarner region.Indeed, the very firstnaturist campsite in Europe, Konversada, is in Istria. A commoncharacteristic o Croatian naturist campsites is the high level osecurity, accommodation, beauty and peace. In accordance withthe values o naturism, which are based on promoting a healthyliestyle, nudist campsites are rich in sports and recreationalacilities. Generally speaking, many believe that the campsites othe highest quality are those intended or naturists. It is sel-evident that naturists will find all their needs ulfilled here. Thereare three types o campsite offering accommodation or naturists:

First there are dedicated naturist campsites with beaches thatare exclusively or their use. Second, there are mixed campsitesor naturists and others, in which one part o the site is intendedor naturists and the other part or other campers. In thesecampsites one part o the beaches will be reserved exclusivelyor naturists, and the rest or the other campers, separated romthe naturist part. In these campsites, the zones or naturists alsohave their own separate acilities, sanitation, restaurants, shopsand more. The third type o campsite is the textile campsite, again with separate beaches or naturists. In these campsites

all guests are dressed when going around the site, but they canswim and sunbathe nude on the dedicated naturist beaches. Thesame campsites also have beaches where it is orbidden to gocompletely without clothes. This type o campsite will be chosenby those who love to swim and sunbathe naked, but preer to bedressed or the rest o the day. The specific inormation about acampsites naturist provision is given along with a special symbolnext to the campsite. Regardless o what you choose, you shouldrealise by now that the high standards o planning, and the greatrange o activities available in Croatian naturist campsites, meansthat the perect tailor-made choice or you is out there, waitingor you, ready to offer you an unorgettable stay on the Adriatic.

    THE KVARNER

    REGION

  • 7/17/2019 Camping Croatia 2015

    51/15649

The Kvarner region, well-known to campers, comes up trumpswith very successul all-season tourism. This much is evidentacross the whole area: rom the Opatija Riviera where, according to historical sources, Croatian tourism began todevelop in the mid-19th century, through Rijeka, the thirdlargest city in Croatia and capital city o Primorje-Gorski Kotarcounty, to Krk and Cres, the largest Croatian islands. Likewise, the islands o Loinj and Rab have been prominent on thetourist map or a long time, as has the Gorski Kotar region the green heart o Croatia, a region o woods and mountains, linking continental and Mediterranean Croatia, encompassingRisnjak National Park and the highest peak, Bjelolasica. Most othe campsites are situated on the islands, where the ecologicalocus and biodiversity o the Kvarner region come to the ore.Dolphin-watching is another maritime attraction that you canenjoy in the waters just off Loinj where these mammals swim

regularly... perhaps in pursuit o the delicious Kvarner scampi.

This pale red delicacy, together with Vrbnika lahtina wine isone o the trademarks o Kvarner eno-gastronomy. But oneshould not orget Gorski Kotars continental specialities, suchas mushrooms, wild berries and game dishes, which also hold animportant place.

As well as being pivotal in the origins o Croatian tourism, theKvarner region is also well-known as the cradle o literacy in theCroatian language. The Baka tablet, known to be one o theoldest examples o the use o the Croatian language, was oundin Jurandvor, near Baka on the island o Krk. You can learnabout the Glagolithic script as used on that tablet along theBaka Glagolithic trail, one o the most original initiatives in thispart o Croatia.

You can find additional inormation about Primorje-Gorski

Kotar county and its individual destinations on www.kvarner.hr

Contrasts and diversity are the mostnoticeable eatures o the Kvarner region, which stretches rom the Uka mountainrange to the Dalmatian coast. Its longtradition o health tourism began at thetime o the Austro-Hungarian Empire, primarily due to its avourable climateand ease o access, and is continuedtoday by numerous wellness andthalassotherapy treatment centres.

sweat rom his body, was ound on the sea-bed off Vele Orjule,an islet near the island o Loinj. The statue is priceless, and itwas exhibited in the Paris Louvre or a while.
