Progress

No, not the principal's new office. Rather, the foundations for the new facility to house machinery for the sprinkler system that is being incorporated into the new building. We are expecting the new building to be handed to the school in mid April. However, before teachers and students move in to this facility we will ensure that all furniture and other resources are in place! Plenty of notice will be given to you before the move is made.

Starship Mobile Phone Schools Campaign

Three Good Reasons to Support This Campaign!

Phones collected help raise funds to keep the Starship National Air Ambulance Service flying.

Phones collected are counted towards our schools chosen rewards from the Starship Mobile Phone Schools Campaign i.e. cameras, sports packs, i-pads and book vouchers.

Campaign helps to ensure NZ landfills are free of an array of hazardous toxic substances.

In just five years the Starship Mobile Phone Appeal has raised close to two and half million dollars to keep the Starship National Air Ambulance Service flying. Schools have participated by collecting unwanted mobile phones and swapping them for a wide range of rewards whilst at the same time raising funds for this worthy cause.

The campaign works like this: Most of us have old mobile phones lying around at home somewhere. We ask that each family in our school come on board and donate any unwanted old mobile phones. Not only does every phone count towards our school’s preferred reward but they also help fund the Starship National Air Ambulance whilst also serving as a valuable recycling initiative. Please drop phones in the collection box in the school office foyer.

1974 - Part 1 Nineteen seventy four was a momentous year. Well known events in 1974 included the resignation of Nixon from the presidency of the United States, the Commonwealth Games were held in New Zealand (with colour television being introduced in November 1973 in readiness for the event) and New Zealand defeated Australia in cricket for the first time (by five wickets in

Christchurch). As an aside Prue Fagg, our English as a Second Language teacher, was at the opening of the Commonwealth Games in a $2 seat with the most expensive seat being $10! A far less heralded event occurred in 1974, namely the start of my teaching career in a year two class in a school in a coastal community on the outskirts of Wellington. Hence, 2015 means I am starting my 41st year in school although it could be argued I have never left the education sector having started at Play Centre in the late ‘50s – the 1950s. While looking forward is important, from time to time looking back can help give a better perspective in terms of where we are at and where we should be headed. Hence and perhaps indulgently I have decided to record some reflections on the past 40 years in terms of what it means for us in 2015. I am sure you will be pleased to learn that what will follow over the next weeks will not include essential information about Campbells Bay School in 2015, so reading these short articles is not compulsory. Looking back is a bit of an inexact art. It is very easy to get muddled and the lens can be a bit blurred from time to time. It was in this context I asked a couple of colleagues on the staff who have been around primary schools for about as long as I have to check on the accuracy of my recollections. Having said that, my recollections are a reflection on my experiences and others may well have differing views. It is a personal account. Some teach-ers circa 1974 might not have experienced PTA ‘bottle drives’. They may have had specialist teachers for music and art; something that we take for granted at CBS in 2015 but they formed no part of my experience. My enduring memory of my first day as a teacher at a school I was placed in by the local Education Board was that the school was closed. I arrived at 7.30 am and found the school to be locked. Things started to get moving about 15 minutes later when the caretaker arrived and it was then I knew I had to get a key to my classroom – no pesky security alarm system to wor-ry about in those days. I raise the issue of timing as I believe we work a lot longer hours today compared with 40 years ago. While time spent working is not an accurate measure of effectiveness, it is, at the very least, an indi-cation of mind set. As I write this at school with two weeks before our stu-dents return I look out at an overflowing car park and I hear the banter of teachers as they go about preparing for the new school year. I know that come the first day of school (for students) many members of staff will be at school well before 7.30 am.

Campbells Bay School Community Forest

Welcome to the forest for 2015. Our Community Forest, situated in the school grounds, has been established now for 15 years. Those associated with it for a long time are very pleased with its progress and growth. The for-est was a gift from the school to the wider community to celebrate the75th Jubilee of Campbells Bay School in 2000. Current students and staff play a vital role in the maintenance of the forest by having weeding sessions every term. This means the forest is in a state to be able to be enjoyed and growth can be assured. We welcome the input of the community on these work days. Advance notice will appear in the newsletter ‘Coming Up’ column about two weeks ahead so you can plan to join us. Please advise the class teacher you are coming - we would love to see you. Children will be reminded near the dates to bring suitable clothing and footwear for working – this will help to extend the life of school uniforms!! If your child wishes to bring gloves and a plastic bag to hold weeds (easier to transport than a bucket) that will be fine. Helpers can bring any equipment that will be of use to them!! The school thanks you in advance for your input and we are sure you will enjoy assisting your child improve the learning and athsetic environment of the school. Weetbix Trythlon 2015

CBS will be sending a team to the Weetbix Tryathlon on Sunday, 22 March. All information regarding the event can be found on the official Weetbix Traythlon. The registrations will work slightly differently this year. No registrations forms and payments will be taken through the school. You will need to register and pay online on the official Weetbix Trythlon website. You will be asked during the registration process if you would like to link to a school team. Click yes and select Campbells Bay School from the drop down box. You have the choice of entering as an individual where you do all 3 of events: the swim, the bike and the run OR you can enter as a team of 2. One does the swim, the other does the bike and both do the run. Please note that the swim is parallel to the shore in waist deep water and it is more of a wade through the water. There are water safety people in the water with the children. The North Shore event is slightly earlier this year and is filling up very quickly. To avoid disappointment, register as soon as you can. As soon as you’ve registered your child’s name will automatically be sent through to the school team. If you have already registered, you can still be linked to the school team. 042 Bus News We had a few ups and downs with the service last week. The morning bus has been and may well continue to operate a little behind schedule. This is caused by 'the late arrival of the bus from an incoming route.' The bus used for our morning school run comes from Orewa to Takapuna. Usually there is plenty of time for the bus to start the 042 route. However, because of on-gong road works at Greville Road (that means the bus is not able to use the bus lane), on occasion there will be some delays. This is out our hands and out of the hands of NZ Bus. Last week the afternoon 042 suffered a significant delay when the bus had to be replaced part way along the route. NZ Bus has apologised for the manner this was handled, namely, they did not inform the school what was happening so we could not adequately respond to parents who called wondering where the bus was - we didn't know either! NZ Bus has assured us this non communication will not happen again should there be a problem with the service. Notwithstanding the above, the 042 bus service usually provides a good way to get to and from school and if you live near the route we encourage you to give it a try.
