WHAT IS CAMP STANISLAUS?

A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Camp Stanislaus is a day and resident summer camp for boys and girls ages 8-15. Founded in 1928, Camp Stanislaus operates in conjunction with the Brothers of the Sacred Heart, a religious order of teaching Brothers who have operated St. Stanislaus College since 1854. The mission of the camp is to provide campers and counselors with a safe and enjoyable recreational and learning experience in the Catholic tradition under the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. Given its beautiful loca-tion on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Camp Stanislaus is able to provide many water activities including swimming, sailing, skiing, kneeboarding, tubing, wakeboarding, canoeing, and fishing. Other camp activities include indoor and outdoor sports, arts and crafts, archery, rec hall, and much more!

While our main goal is to provide a good time, we also aim to allow our campers to create new friend-ships, learn indpendence, improve social skills, encourage one another, and work hard to achieve their goals. Camp Stanislaus has become a tradition passed down from generation to generation and continues to welcome new faces each year!

I want to start out by extending a sincere thanks to all the campers, parents, staff, Brothers, and volunteers for making this summer a fun, rewarding, and memorable experience! Every one of you contribute to the unique experience of camp. It has been a blessing to witness campers become coun-selors-in-training (CIT’s) and eventually counselors. The people truly are what make camp great. I cannot describe how special it is to hear a father recounting his camp experiences to his son on open-ing day and to watch our veteran campers reunite with old friends each summer.

This year was a big one for us in more ways than one. There were more than 300 campers who at-tended camp this summer over the four weeks camp was in session. We were also able to bring back canoeing as a major activity and added a new offshore fishing boat. The additions do not stop at the end of the summer; for the first time, Camp Stanislaus has plans to offer a father and son camp and, over the course of the school year, the dorm will be completely renovated and ready for campers this coming summer. This will go along with the renovation of the first floor of the school building which opened this past fall. These additions will give camp even more resources to make a great experience.

I have to thank the campers for their positive attitudes and for always trying their best in all activities. We witnessed much improvement and shared many laughs and memorable moments throughout the summer. I know many of you came to camp not knowing a soul but left with friends for life. All in all, everything was a big success and we hope to be able to continue like this into the future.

Lastly, I need to say a special thanks to our wonderful staff! We could have the nicest equipment in the world, but the people who make this camp so great are our hardworking counselors and volun-teers. Each of you led with patience, enthusiasm, and compassion and served as positive Christian role models. You are the reason why our campers want to come back one day serving as counselors themselves.

I wish you all a fantastic year and we look forward to seeing every one of you next summer!

THE WAR OARThe “War Oar” was a new addition to camp this year, but its history dates back to the Civil War. The legend behind the oar tells of how the Brothers of the Sacred Heart were able to save their school and their ministry when the Union troops landed on the beaches of Bay Saint Lou-is in 1863. When the Brothers expressed their intention to remain a neutral party, the War Oar was gifted to them as a sign of the agree-ment of peace with the Union troops. Passed down from the Brothers, The War Oar has now become a symbol of camp spirit, creativity, and positive attitude and each day after lunch the War Oar was presented to the group which strongly demonstrated these characteristics.
