Dear Ondessonk Friends, Thanks to your steady support, 2016 was a year of renewed sustainability and stewardship as we celebrated 57 summers of service to our campers. We are eternally grateful for the opportunity to serve kids and families as we strive to meet our mission to provide exceptional outdoor and spiritual adventures empowering kids of all ages.

Though the year included many high points, we will someday look back and consider it among the most important in our organization’s history for one major reason. In April of 2016, we retired the debt incurred by building a new dining hall in 2003. At one time many years ago, making our monthly payments felt overwhelming. Some months it seemed nearly impossible. This achievement required rounded support from many Ondessonk Friends, but we are especially thankful for the encouraging guidance of our Board of Directors and Finance Committee, whose members during the last decade collectively set the tone for us to be disciplined and scrupulous in fulfilling our debt obligation. The 2,922 summer campers we served last year (nearly 10 percent more than served in 2015) saw immediate results, as debt-retirement paved the way for enhanced investment in program and facility improvements. Though probably more noticed by parents than campers, being debt free allows us to devote resources to sometimes neglected operating needs like road paving – the first phase of which we tackled in June of 2016.

Thank you for your help and active involvement in making Camp Ondessonk successful in 2016. We encourage you to remain involved, for our campers need you now and in the future.

2016 in Review...

We Our Volunteers!Many hands make light work, and in 2016 our wonderful volunteers donated over 11,400 hours of their time to the children of Camp Ondessonk. At an average wage of $18.40/hour*, Ondessonk volunteers saved Camp an estimated $210,000 in labor costs in 2016, allowing us to use this money to serve our campers and guests with the industry’s best programs. We truly couldn’t run Camp Ondessonk without our volunteers!

Ondessonk drew campers from 28 states in 2016, with the vast majority hailing from the states of Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, and Kentucky. We had campers from as far away as Alaska, and even Mexico! It’s exciting to see third- and fourth-generations of camers enjoying the same Camp O experiences as their parents and grandparents. Shared experiences build strong families!

Momentum captured during the last several years blossomed further in 2016. We are pleased to report a significant 2016 year-end budget surplus, largely fueled by a 10% increase in summer camp enrollment. Revenue generated from year-round programming like horseback riding, outdoor education programming (school groups), and weekend camping, among other areas, combined with solid overall fundraising results also solidified our financial position. Of special note, in 2016 we received the second installment of a generous bequest made by a former camper. Though the donor did not restrict the gift to any specific area of the operation, we set aside the money to help fund a future construction project like the new shower house planned for the west side of camp.Camp’s financial standing was greatly enhanced by the

retirement of our dining hall debt in April. As mentioned in the introductory letter of this report, the absence of debt-service has strengthened the organization immensely. Cash once devoted to dining hall payments is now available for program and facility improvements. For example, in June of 2016 a paving crew resurfaced two miles of the camp road as well as the St. Noel driveway and parking lot. The work was but the first phase of a multi-year effort that will span four years.Thank you for your support in strengthening Camp

Camp Ondessonk’s Finances

Camp Ondessonk strives to meet the highest health and safety standards. We are proud to be accredited by the American Camp Association. This accreditation means that Ondessonk thoroughly reviews operational practices, seeks the wisdom of other camp professionals, and continually makes improvements to comply with approximately 300 written standards. Only one-fourth of the camps in the United States have earned this mark of distinction. In addition, our on-site health center is managed by a team of medical professionals, and Ondessonk’s Equestrian Program is accredited by the Certified Horsemanship Association.
