Problem:• The camp’s water source, a
groundwater spring, must have 4-log virus removal
• The spring is ¼ mile from the camp• The only electrical power comes from
generators located at the camp• Leasing land from US Forest Service
makes construction at spring complex
Approach:• Design Objectives:
1. a reliable, economical water filtration system
2. monitoring configuration3. housing appropriate for all
seasons.• Perform cost and reliability analysis
of two design alternatives:1. Solar Power (at spring)2. Generators (at camp)
Solution:• Place a new 5,000 gal tank at the camp with an
accompanying shed that houses the water treatment and monitoring apparatus.
• Install a water treatment system that includes a 3-micron pre-filter, 1-micron main filter, and a chlorine injection system.
• The housing is to be built on a concrete slab that was designed for the full tank weight and snow load. The shed housing was designed for a snow load of 200 psf.
• The water tank size was based on the daily camp water demands and the flow capacity of the filter.
• The proposed location was chosen for proximity to the main water line and the camp.
