October 19, 2010 Press Release for Camp Hope Hospice of South Georgia, Inc. held its Second Annual Children’s grief camp, “Camp Hope”, on Saturday October 9th. The camp was held on Blythe Island in Brunswick, GA. Camp Hope was attended by eleven children and was supported by qualified counselors, volunteers, and hospice staff. While attending Camp Hope, children who have lost loved ones are given the opportunity to share about their losses and express their emotions with others in a safe and comfortable environment. They learn that communicating grief is a helpful and natural response to find healing after losing a loved one. Although Camp Hope does provide for moments of serious reflection and contemplation it also provides many opportunities of exciting fun, recreation, and relaxation. Camp Hope began with an early morning registration at Hospice of South Georgia office and then traveled to the campsite for breakfast. The campers enjoyed a time of getting to know each other through fun icebreaker activities. Next they watched the movie “The Lion King”. Afterwards the campers were divided into age groups for sessions of group, recreation, and art therapy. Each session allowed the campers the opportunity to share their emotions and express their grief in unique ways. Camp Hope ended with the parents and guardians arriving to share a special time with the camp counselors and then unite once again with their children. It was a very poignant time as everyone walked together to the marsh and released balloons. Some had notes attached that the campers had made in memory of their deceased loved ones. Stanley Todd, Chairman of the Camp Hope Committee, expresses his sincere appreciation to the Hospice of South Georgia staff and to the many others who volunteered and worked diligently to make the event successful. It would have been impossible without the dedication and commitment of those who gave their time and talents. He also is thankful for the parents and guardians that sent their children and came to support the camp. A very special thank you goes out to the following sponsors: The United Way; Chic-fil-A restaurant; Ms. Pat Edwards; Mr. Danny Nobles, Mr. John Westberry and Howard-Jones-Nobles funeral home; Angie Copeland Photography, The Coca-Cola Company; Dr. Ronald Mosley, DMD, Vidalia; The Wayne County Transit Authority; Mr. Charles Mitchell of Frito-Lay Corporation; The Altamaha Baptist Association; Pepsi Cola; and Genesis Equipment Company. Hospice of South Georgia has already begun to make plans for next year’s Camp Hope.
