A S M D O B R A S I LFounded 22 years ago, Ação Social pela Música do Brasil (Social
Action through Music of Brazil) is a non-profit, non-governmental
organization, whose mission is to promote cultural education and
social inclusion through the teaching of classical music and the practice
of musical instruments. It is dedicated exclusively to children and
teenagers living in low-income communities under conditions of
extreme social vulnerability. Throughout its existence, over 10,000
students have attended the Núcleos de Música – Music Learning
Centers – with positive results, drawing them away from drug trafficking
and domestic violence. Currently, the organization serves 2,730
students in twelve centers, five of which are located in the city of Rio de
Janeiro (such as the communities of Chapéu Mangueira, Dona Marta,
Complexo do Alemão, Vila Isabel and Rio das Pedras), making up a
complex of over 20 communities. Other centers throughout Brazil
include two in the city of Petrópolis, four in João Pessoa, in the state of
Paraiba and one in Ji-Paraná, in the state of Rondônia.
As a spin-off of the work in the Núcleos de Música, ASM do Brasil
created, in 2014, the Youth Symphony of Rio de Janeiro – OSJRJ
and several chamber music ensembles such as the Camerata Jovem do
Rio de Janeiro (Youth Camerata of Rio de Janeiro) and the Conjunto
de Violoncellos (Cello Ensemble). These ensembles showcase the
result achieved through the work of many years, as they single out and
nurture new talents among the young musicians and pave the way for
professional careers.

It is composed of 14 musicians ages 14 to 20, residents of low-income
communities in Rio de Janeiro known as favelas: Complexo do Alemão,
Morro dos Macacos, Pavão-Pavãozinho and Morro da Babilônia. All
of these young musicians were exposed to music for the first time 5
years ago at most, at the Center of Music of ASM of Brazil. In this
incredibly short period of time, they have come a long way and achieved
astounding proficiency on their instruments. They have performed on
renowned stages in Rio de Janeiro, such as the Cidade das Artes, Teatro
Municipal and Sala Cecília Meireles, to name the most important. In
some of these presentations, they played alongside acclaimed musicians,
notably Brazilian composer and guitarist Yamandu Costa and the
distinguished pianist Lang Lang. In recent years, they have participated
with great success in the Londrina International Music Festival in the
State of Paraná and the João Pessoa International Music Festival in the
State of Paraíba.
In 2017, the Camerata went on its first international tour which
took it to Germany and Holland. The young musicians took classes
with members of the Munich Symphony Orchestra for a week and
performed on stages such as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and
the Wallraf Richartz Museum in Cologne. This experience was crucial
to their progress and demonstrated that young people who live under
especially vulnerable social conditions are capable of making quality
classical music when exposed to serious and objective musical education.

FIORELLA SOLARESA native of Guatemala, musician and cultural producer Fiorella Solares came to Brazil at a very young age, acquired Brazilian citizenship and undertook a noteworthy career as a cellist in the Symphony Orchestra of the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro. Here she met and married renowned Brazilian conductor David Machado. Together, they founded the “Ação Social pela Música do Brasil”. After maestro David Machado’s untimely death in 1995, Fiorella gathered her strength and, with great determination, carried on the work initiated with her late husband. Today, she runs the organization with enormous dedication, thus transforming lives and helping to spread the knowledge of classical music to all audiences, including to those who would not otherwise have had access to it.
