Fruits and vegetables are the building blocks of a healthy diet. But many people do not eat the recommended number of serv-ings of produce. That's especially true among growing children, who can benefit greatly from the vitamins and nutrients fruitsand vegetables provide.According to the latest data from the NPD Group, a market
research firm, Americans eat a little more than half a cup of fruitand a cup of vegetables per day. This is less than half of what thegovernment recommends. The data is similar in Canada, whereresearchers at Concordia University found that Canadian adultsages 30 to 60, especially those from lower socioeconomic back-grounds, aren't consuming the daily recommended levels of fruitsand vegetables.Anyone who eats roughly 2,000 calories per day should strive
to consume between two to three cups of vegetables and two cupsof fruit per day. Produce helps to fight disease because it containshealthy antioxidants, fiber, minerals and vitamins. Eating fourcups per day may seem difficult, but there are many ways to in-corporate fruits and vegetables into everyday recipes.
• Substitute pureed fruit, like figs, pears and apples, for oil inrecipes for cakes and cookies. This will ensure the bakedgoods are moist but with a lot less fat.
• Add fresh berries or raisins to breakfast cereals and oatmeal.
• Add cauliflower or squash to boiled potatoes before mash-ing them to increase the nutritional punch and flavor ofmashed potatoes.
• Blend fruits and vegetables to create smoothies for breakfastor lunch on the go.
• Bake hearty muffins or breads with sweet potato or carrots inthe batter.
• Mix stewed tomatoes in with your broth soup base tomake a vegetable or chicken soup even more nutri-tious.
• Opt for vegetables piled high atop a slice of pizza in lieuof meats or extra cheese.
• Divide your dinner plate into quadrants, filling half ofthe plate with vegetables, one quarter with meat and theremainder with a whole grain.
• Replace lettuce on a sandwich or burger with afresh leaf of spinach. While you're dressing your
sandwich, add a slice of tomato, too.
• Substitute fresh vegetables and fruit slices for chips whenserving dips and salsas. Kale chips are growing in popularity.
• Give children a cup of sliced grapes with their lunches as arefreshing and healthy snack.
• Shred vegetables into a hearty "slaw" and top it with a vinai-grette or a typical mayonnaise-based dressing.
• Blend other vegetables into your pasta sauce.
• Use vegetables instead of pasta in traditional dishes. Layereggplant slices to make a lasagna. Or use a spiral slicer toslice zucchini or carrots when making homemade noodles.
• Fruit salad is often a refreshing snack or dessert. Having fruitalready diced in a large bowl makes it more convenient to eatand possibly more enticing to children.
• Make a vegetable roll-up, filling pizza dough with broccoli orspinach and shredded cheese.
• Mix together an avocado, 1/4 cup of cocoa powder and 1/4cup honey to create a healthy alternative to chocolate pud-ding.
• Use pureed vegetables to thicken cheese sauce for macaroniand cheese recipes.
• Shred vegetables and add them to beaten eggs for omeletsor scrambles.

Diet & fitness tip — Curb your sweet toothGot a late-night sugar craving that just won't quit? To satisfy your sweettooth without pushing yourself over the calorie edge, even in the latenight hours, think 'fruit first.' So resist that chocolate cake siren, and in-stead enjoy a sliced apple with a tablespoon of nut butter (like peanutor almond) or fresh fig halves spread with ricotta. Then sleep sweet, knowing you're still on the right, healthy track.

Healthy Tip — Set "really small" goals.
The easier the goal, the more likely you are toachieve it. Once you achieve it, the more mo-tivated you will be to keep going. It will bemore motivating to achieve losing two pounds10 times than trying to lose 20 pounds, get-ting stuck and giving up.
Healthy Tip —Figure out what your body's really telling you.It is easy to confuse your body's signals forthirst and hunger. So if you're feeling hungry, you might actually just be thirsty. Drink a glassof water, distract yourself with something andsee if that 'hunger' doesn't go away.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 40 percent of the United States population is now consid-ered obese, while an additional 34 percent are considered over-weight. In Canada, 25 percent of the population is classified asobese and 41 percent are overweight. These figures illustrate apotentially grave future for Canadians and Americans alike, asthe consequences of being overweight or obese include diabetes, heart disease and even death.Obesity can have a very real and lasting impact on individuals
and future generations. Here are some health effects that can bethe result of carrying around too much weight.
CancerTheNational Cancer Institute says each year thousands of new
cases of cancer in men and women can be linked to obesity. Someresearchers feel that excess fat cells increase hormonal activity, which can lead to tumor growth.
High blood pressureOverweight or obese people have a greater chance of develop-
ing high blood pressure. Blood pressure is the force of bloodpushing against the walls of the arteries while the heart pumpsblood. High blood pressure can weaken the heart over time, caus-ing it to work less efficiently, and may lead to aneurysm, heartfailure or stroke.
InfertilityAs with cancer, the potential correlation between obesity and
infertility requires further study. But there is some evidence thatpoints to obesity as a contributing factor to infertility. Over-weight women tend to have a harder time getting pregnant, andsome researchers feel that is because fatty tissue may cause hor-monal changes that impact conception.
Type 2 diabetesWhen a person has type 2 diabetes, his or her body cannot use
insulin properly. Over time, the body cannot make enough in-sulin to regulate blood sugar level. About 80 to 90 percent of peo-ple who are obese also have type 2 diabetes, and it's believed thatbeing overweight places extra stress on the body's ability to main-tain proper glucose levels in the blood, creating a greater need forinsulin. This can create a vicious cycle, as insulin use itself canlead to weight gain.
OsteoarthritisOverweight individuals frequently develop pain in the joints of
their knees, hips and lower backs. The condition occurs as tissuethat protects the joints wears away. Extra weight also can wreakhavoc on the feet that are forced to bear those extra pounds.
Premature birthA study published in the Journal of the American Medical As-
sociation found that overweight women are at a greater risk ofhaving a preterm delivery. Too much fat can weaken uterine andcervical membranes.
Trouble sleepingObese and overweight people can have problems sleeping, says
the American Sleep Foundation. Obesity can be linked to sleepapnea, a condition in which a person gasps for air or momentar-ily stops breathing while asleep. This condition can result in fre-quent interruptions in sleep and an overall poor quality of sleep.
Obesity and overweight can contribute to many health prob-lems, some of which may come as a surprise to men and womenwho are carrying extra weight.

Healthy Tip — Convince yourself it really is easy. What we see with our eyes is filtered through ourbrains. That's why one person sees the glass halfempty and the other sees it half full. If we think ex-ercise will be hard, it will actually seem that way.Focus on the end result and keep reminding your-self that it isn't harder than you can handle. Yourchance of success will be much greater!
Healthy Tip — Revamp your workout.Purchase a session with a personal trainer. Boredom and cold weathertend to make people lazy. Work on something new to keep thingsfun! Swimming is a good choice since we're confined indoors duringthe winter months. Set a goal to compete in a triathlon. You'll giveyour body the benefit of working different muscle groups.
More evidence points to the importance of routine eye exams, not only to pinpoint potential conditions of the eye, but also toserve as windows to diseases that affect the entire body. Nowmore than ever it is essential to make and keep annual eye exams,as they can help to reveal the first signs of serious ailments.Doctors from around the world say dozens of diseases — fromcertain cancers to arthritis to high blood pressure — can showsymptoms in the eye. Under the watchful and knowing gaze of aneyecare professional, individuals can get early diagnosis and begintreatment promptly.According to Dr. Roy Chuck, chair of the Department of Oph-thalmology and Visual Sciences at Albert Einstein College ofMedicine and Montefiore Medical Center, there are many sys-temic diseases that can be seen in the eye. In addition to the con-ditions mentioned, jaundice can indicate liver disease whileretinal detachment and bleeding in new blood vessels may indi-cate hypertension. By looking at the color of the cornea, somedoctors can tell if a patient has elevated levels of cholesterol. Many people have had their eye doctors be the first healthcareprofessional to detect the presence of their diabetes. If an ophthalmologist suspects an underlying medical condi-
tion, he or she will likely refer men and women to their primarycare doctors for a more thorough examination.Going to the eye doctor can do more than ensure your visionis sharp. It's a life-saving decision for many people who havemajor health conditions diagnosed through the eyes.

Did you know?If you have psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condi-tion marked by red, flaky patches on the body, youalso could be at risk for a certain type of arthritis.Psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiffness, swellingand pain in and around the joints, affects up to 30percent of people with psoriasis, says the NationalPsoriasis Foundation. While psoriatic arthritis candevelop at any time, it is most common in people be-tween the ages of 30 and 50. This type of arthritiscan develop slowly or come on quickly and be severe.Just like psoriasis itself, psoriatic arthritis tends to gothrough periods of flare-up and remission. Typically, the skin condition precedes the joint disease in 85percent of patients. Keep in mind that a severe caseof psoriasis will not necessarly translate into a severecase of arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis may be treated likeother forms of arthritis. Doctors may prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs, antirheumatic drugs, exercise, and complementary therapies. Those who have pso-riasis and have begun to experience joint pain andstiffness should talk to a doctor about potential ther-apies.

Healthy Tip — Think "cortisol”It's a hormone we release when we're stressed. An el-evated level can increase cravings for sweets andcarbs, which can then lead to overeating and constanthunger. An elevated level also can cause a larger per-centage of fat to be stored in the abdominal area. Then that causes more cortisol production, whichmeans even more abdominal fat.

Incorporate foods that helpfight cancer into your diet
The foods we eat contribute directly to our overall health. From toddlers just getting used to solid foods to adults planningtheir diets, the foods we eat heavily influence how healthy or un-healthy we become.
Some foods can even reduce our risk for certain diseases, in-cluding cancer. According to the American Institute for CancerResearch, numerous studies have demonstrated that individualminerals, vitamins and phytochemicals have certain anticancerproperties that can protect men, women and children from thispotentially deadly disease. The following are a handful of foodsthe AICR says can fight cancer and help men and women im-prove their overall health.
• Apples: Apples are a great source of vitamin C, with oneapple providing at least 10 percent of the recommended dailyamount of this valuable vitamin. Apples also are a greatsource of fiber, which can help men and women maintain ahealthy weight. That's important, as excess body fat increasesa person's risk for seven different types of cancer. A majorportion of apples' dietary fiber is pectin, a polysaccharide thatbacteria in the stomach uses to produce compounds that pro-tect colon cells.
• Cherries: Cherries are another great source of fiber and vi-tamin C, and sweet and tart cherries also contain potassium.Cherries get their dark color from anthocyanins, which areantioxidants that protect cells from damage. Studies haveshown that anthocyanins inhibit the growth of cancer cellsand even stimulate their self-destruction while having nonegative effects on healthy cells. Anthocyanins also have beenshown to reduce signs of inflammation in adults who con-sumed two to three servings of cherries or cherry juice perday.
• Grapefruit: One-half of a medium-sized pink, red or whitegrapefruit provides at least 50 percent of an adults' daily rec-ommended intake of vitamin C. Though research into thepotential anticancer properties of grapefruit with regard tohumans is ongoing, studies of animals and cells have shownthat grapefruit powder as well as limonin and naringenin, two phytochemicals found in grapefruit, decrease the growthand increase the self-destruction of breast, colon, lung, mouth, skin, and stomach cancers.
• Walnuts: Nuts are often cited when discussing foods withanticancer properties, but the AICR notes that walnuts, inparticular, are the most heavily researched. Despite that re-search, the AICR remains hesitant to draw any conclusionswith regard to walnuts and their potential link to lowering
cancer risk. However, several studies of mice found that con-suming walnuts decreased the growth of breast and colon tu-mors among mice who ate walnuts as opposed to those whodid not, while other studies in mice indicated that walnutsreduced the growth of prostate cancer. Studies into the im-pact of the Mediterranean diet, which includes walnuts, haveshown that such a diet can help people lose fat and lowertheir blood pressure and triglycerides. But the AICR stillnotes the need for more research into walnuts before theycan be considered foods that fight cancer.
Many factors, such as family history, that increase our risk fordeveloping cancer are beyond our control. But the foods wechoose to eat can play a significant role in reducing our risk of de-veloping various cancers. More information about the link be-tween diet and cancer is available at www.aicr.org.

Healthy Tip — Become your best self mentally and physically.Don't make it about a number on a scale. Look at what you are doing 'right' at home, suchas eating breakfast or eating whole grains. Then focus on what you need to work on. Forexample, do you need more fruits and vegetables? Focus on health habits rather than acertain number of calories. If you can change habits, weight loss will follow.

Life after 50Recommended immunizationsfor those age 50+
Routine immunizations can keep people safe and healthy.Certain vaccinations can prevent diseases from producingsymptoms, while others can lessen the duration of an illnessor make conditions less severe.
Vaccination schedules become a way of life for parents toyoung children. But vaccinations aren’t just for kids, andadults should keep tabs on their immunization histories toensure they’re up-to-date with vaccinations for their partic-ular age group and lifestyle.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warnsthat the elderly are more likely to die of a vaccine-pre-ventable disease than other age groups. The immune systembegins to decline as we age, so the body can benefit from thedisease-fighting boost provided by vaccinations. Individualsat any age should discuss immunizations with their doctors, but it’s a particularly important conversation for those age50 and older.
Vaccine schedules and recommendations may vary de-pending on where a person lives, but the following immu-nization recommendations are offered courtesy of the CDC.
• Influenza: An annual flu shot can help prevent the nearly36,000 deaths that occur due to flu each year in theUnited States. The flu vaccine is designed to combat thecurrent strain of flu, so it is recommended anytime be-tween September to March, which is the prime flu sea-son. People age 50 and older should opt for the injectionrather than the nasal form of the vaccine.
• Tdap: This vaccine protects against tetanus, diphtheriaand pertussis and is especially necessary for people whohave close contact with young infants. Pertussis, orwhooping cough, can be passed on to youngsters andmake them very ill. If you’ve never received a Tdap vac-cine, the CDC suggests getting it at least once. Individ-ual tetanus boosters should be received every 10 years.
• Pneumococcal: Pneumococcal disease is an infectioncaused by the pneumococcus bacteria. It can cause pneu-monia, blood infection, ear infections, and even bacter-ial meningitis. This vaccine is given to adults age 65 andolder or to younger adults at their physicians’ discretion.
• Hepatitis A: Individuals with medical, occupational orlifestyle conditions, such as healthcare workers or peo-ple with chronic liver disease, may need a two-dose se-ries of the hepatitis A vaccine.
Adults who are avid travelers to various parts of the worldthat may bring them in contact with animals or people whodo not receive the same course of immunizations may needadditional vaccines. Speak with a doctor about which immu-nizations are recommended before travel.
Dietary changes necessary after 50As people age, their dietary needs begin to change. Foods that
were once staples of your diet as a youth may be restricted onceyou hit a certain age, while other foods you may have alwaysavoided may now be necessary to fuel and support a healthy body.
Eating healthy foods and exercising may not be enough to sus-tain health, as hormonal changes and other health effects as aperson reaches age 50 can have a profound impact on his or hernutritional requirements. The following are a few things menand women over 50 may want to consider as they look to eat ahealthy diet for years to come.
Vitamin DBoth men and women age 50 and up have a reduced ability to
produce vitamin D through exposure to the sun. Extra vitamin Dwill be needed from foods and supplements.
Friendly fatsPeople over age 50 should increase their intake of unsaturated
fats and reduce consumption of saturated fats. Nutrient-rich un-saturated fats can guard against heart conditions, protect againststroke, keep skin supple, and even help men and women maintaingood neurological health. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found innuts, olives, seeds, and fatty fishes.
Increase proteinAccording to Christine Gerbstadt, MD, RD, a spokesperson
for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, as they age, men andwomen need more protein in their diets to maintain their mus-cle mass. Look for lean sources of protein from fish and poultry.Beans are also a low-fat source of protein that can help fulfill dailyprotein requirements.
More fiberEating more fiber can help with digestive and intestinal prob-
lems, such as constipation. Constipation can occur when fiber in-take is not enough, coupled with a more sedentary lifestyle. Thebest way to get fiber is through diet. Leave the skins on fruit andvegetables and choose whole fruits over juices. Always increasefiber slowly to determine your tolerance.
Fewer caloriesThe National Institute on Aging says women over the age of 50
need between 1,600 and 2,000 calories, depending on how phys-ically active they are. Men need between 2,000 and 2,400 caloriesper day.
More waterAs a person ages, his or her body may not signal it is thirsty as
well as it once did, so it's possible that you may not recognize whenyou are thirsty or dehydrated. The Mayo Clinic recommendsaround nine to 10 cups of beverages per day to remain hydrated.
