SOCIETY INTRODUCTION

The Cambridge University Chinese Orchestra Society (CUCOS) was founded in 2007 with the hope of giving a new musical perspective to the community in the UK and sharing oriental music. The Society consists of a Chinese Instrument Department (CID) and a Western Instrument Department (WID). We perform at the West Road Concert Hall every year and have tours around the UK.

We are delighted to welcome all new joiners for another exciting year! We are passionate about Chinese music and perform Chinese

music in great venues with all Chinese/western instruments. We have two orchestras- CID (Chinese Instrument Division), and WID (Western Instrument Division). We look for ALL instrument players from any background that shares a passion/interest for Chinese music! (No age/university/school restrictions!)

If you would like to join us, especially for those who have experience in conducting, email:

Jingyi Liu (Deputy head of CID): [email protected] Lu (Deputy head of WID): [email protected]

We welcome musicians from various countries, that’s why you can see so many different ethnic faces in this yearbook.

This year we are moving forward and hope to present more qualified music pieces and concerts to everyone who loves music!

Your music wants you! Are you ready?

CONDUCTOR 2011-2012

Page 11: Cambridge University Chinese Orchestra Society Yearbook 2012

Q1: Why did you join CUCOS?Q&A PART 1

It is the only society in Cambridge that plays Chinese music.

As ordered by her Royal Highness. At pre-Cambridge orientation camp, I was sitting opposite Eva in ice-breaking self introduction session, stood up and said “...and I can play Erhu”.

Eva: “ You are now part of CUCOS. ” The end.

YIHAN MAO

THOMAS NG

Wanted to join a casual, friendly orchestra.

FLORA LO

I was very impressed by CUCOS concert this year.

It must be brilliant to get involved in such society full of talented musicians sharing the same interest.

Q2: What did you think CUCOS is?... And what it actually is?

CUCOS is not just a society of music, but more importantly also a place of happiness.

-- Dan Zhao

It consists of a group of interesting, enthusiastic and talented musicians.

-- Di Ma

CUCOS=Cool United Collection of Students!

-- Flora Lo

The greatest society in the universe. But it actually is a band of monkeys.

-- Chief Monkey

Q3: Best memory?

All the rehearsals, whether smooth or difficult. They were the times I was enjoying

music.

-- Dan Zhao

Choon Boon telling me to shoot Lu Shan with my violin bow as punishment for his

mistake. (Shame I did’t actually do it...)

-- Flora Lo

The first time that we actually played in tune; watch Wenliang Li lying on an

apparent too-small couch. John Chen’s idea

on the tree shelter: “Trees are covered because they are too ugly.”

-- Shufan Jiang

Playing the timpani outside the concert hall at 11pm after our concert.

-- Chief Monkey

Q4: What you learnt?

Learned to enjoy the time spent with other musicians, how to work as a big team, and

different types of music instruments.

-- Yihan Mao

Cheap Sainsbury cider is cheap for a reason. Finding a pub after concert is harder than it

sounds.

-- Thomas Ng

How to beat box with flute. How important it is to have an attractive conductor in the

orchestra.

-- Shufan Jiang

Dream is always hard to be transformed into reality, but when difficulties rush towards

you, keep calm and hold on to it.

-- Wenliang Li

Western music is the enemy of man.

-- Chief Monkey

Q&A Part 2

Page 13: Cambridge University Chinese Orchestra Society Yearbook 2012

Q5: Say a few words to musicians next year.Q&A PART 3

Share our dream, share our passion!

Chinese music can be honey, it’s lovely as cakes with double cream. Meet some most extraordinary people and create beauty together.

DANNY ONSIONG

SHUFAN JIANG

So long and thank you for all the fish.

THOMAS NG

I am watching you.

CHIEF MONKEY

Do not hesitate when you pick up your instrument, just play it!

Do not hang back when you face an orchestra, the baton is right in your hand!

No audition is required. You are the conductor and the musician we want!
