YOUR GUIDE TO THE COMPLEX AND SOMEWHAT MINDBOGGLING WORLD OF VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Cambridge Technicals

Our Cambridge Technicals suite gives you the reassurance that you have the right qualifications to support your students’ lifelong learning journey.

Cambridge Technicals are vocational qualifications at Level 2 and Level 3 for students aged 16+. They’re designed with the workplace in mind and provide a high-quality alternative to A Levels, with a great range of subjects to choose from.

Vocational education is not just about results, it’s about educating people in the knowledge and skills required for employment and for the community as a whole. It’s also about developing the behaviours and attributes needed to progress and succeed in education and in work.

We have extended both the 2012 Level 2 and Level 3 suite of qualifications. The 2016 Level 3 suite is live and available to teach now and the Level 2 suite will be available for first teach September 2017 (*please note not all subjects have a 2016 specification). Extending the 2012 suites gives you real choice when it comes to selecting your post 16 provision; enabling you to provide qualifications that are fit for purpose, right for your students destination, and accessible for your students’ needs and allowing them to succeed within their post 16 studies.

The future of Cambridge Technicals in Art and Design

At the moment we’ve taken the decision not to re-develop the 2012 Cambridge Technicals in Art and Design suite (Level 2 and Level 3).

Therefore the qualifications will not receive Key Stage 5 Performance Table points from 2018 onwards.

However the 2012 Cambridge Technicals in Art and Design do:

• Receive funding – included within Key Stage 5 study programmes.

• Receive UCAS points – Level 3 is included on the old and the new UCAS tariff.

Delivery of the 2012 Cambridge Technicals in Art and Design suite from 2016 onwards:

So you can continue to provide the Cambridge Technicals in Art and Design we’ve extended the 2012 Level 2 and Level 3 specifications.

This means that you’ll be able to enter: • Level 2 students until 30 April 2020 – this will allow you to run a final cohort in September 2019 with them completing their qualification by August 2022.

• Level 3 students on a 2 year study programme in September 2020, with their last entry by 31 August 2021 and with them completing their qualification by 31 August 2024.

• Once entered for a particular level, the ability to move between sizes within that level (‘topping up’ and ‘moving down’) is available until the last certification date.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Term MeaningCambridge Technicals Available at Level 2 and Level 3 – these are OCR’s vocational qualifications for

post 16 students in full time study. Basically – our version of Pearson’s BTEC! Last Entry This is the last date you can make student entries. Last Certification This is the last date you can claim for student certifications – so the students

work must be complete, moderated and grades finalised. Review Date This is the date that we must decide if we are going to extend, replace or

withdraw. Section 96 This is the list of qualifications that are funded for 16-19 year olds. It’s sometimes

best searching by the QAN. http://www.education.gov.uk/section96/search/search.cfm

QAN Qualification Accreditation Number – a useful number to use when searching the Ofqual Register or Section 96.

Post 19 Funding Advanced Learner Loans are now available for students 19+.

From 1st August 2016, the age at which students can apply for a loan lowers to 19. Students will be able to apply for these 19+ loans from May 2016, although they’ll not be able to start the qualification until after 1st August 2016.

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan is available to anyone over the age of 24 wishing to study a qualification at Level 3 or 4.

Term MeaningMEI Meaningful Employer Involvement – a DfE technical guidance requirement for

qualifications categorised as Technical Certificate and Tech Level. Centres must provide MEI for their students on these types of qualifications. See our qualification centre handbook for further details of what you need to do.

Technical Certificate DfE category in the technical guidance for Level 2 vocational qualifications. These are Level 2 qualifications for students wishing to specialise in a specific industry or occupation. They’ll provide your students with the specialist knowledge and skills to progress onto an apprenticeship, employment or Tech Level.

Applied General DfE category in the technical guidance for Level 3 vocational qualifications.

These are Level 3 qualifications providing your students with transferable knowledge and skills so they can continue their education via a range of HE courses. They’re designed to fulfil the entry requirements for a range of HE courses, either by meeting the entry requirements in their own right or alongside other qualifications at the same level.

Tech Level DfE category in the technical guidance for Level 3 vocational qualifications.

These are Level 3 qualifications on a par with A Levels and recognised by employers. They’re for post 16 students wishing to specialise in a specific industry or occupation. They’ll provide your students with the specialist knowledge and skills to progress onto a related HE course, apprenticeship or employment.

UCAS points Points attached to Level 3 qualifications to help students gain entry into university.

Level 3 qualifications designed for progression to university will normally have UCAS points attached to them. This isn’t just Cambridge Technicals, but vocational qualifications from other exam boards such as Pearson’s BTEC, and A-Levels too.

However, this doesn’t mean every university will accept them, there are a lot of variables to consider; it’s not as simple as this university does and this one doesn’t.
