Проблема защиты окружающей среды уже давно не новая. Учёные, политики, активисты много говорят об ухудшении качества воздуха, изменении климата и других аспектах этой проблемы, но мало что меняется в мире.
Конечно, если мы все откажемся от своих автомобилей, пересядем на общественный транспорт и перестанем летать в отпуск на самолётах, качество воздуха улучшится, но реально ли это? Можно ли избавиться от типичного для человека желания думать о своём удобстве?
Правда ли, что жизнь в типичных российских городах приводит к загрязнению окружающей среды? Ведь жизнь в многоэтажных городских домах гораздо компактнее. Если бы все городские жители жили в индивидуальных домах, окружённых садами, расстояния были бы значительно больше и потребовалось бы гораздо больше бензина, чтобы добраться в нужное место. Было бы труднее обеспечить людей общественным транспортом, и все бы пользовались только машинами для любой поездки! Может быть, жизнь в «каменных джунглях», как иногда называют большие города, и есть самый надёжный способ улучшить окружающую среду?

Об этой проблеме стали больше говорить в конце двадцатого века, когда новые мобильные технологии нарушили границу между рабочим и личным временем. Раньше ведь не было мобильной связи, а компьютеры были такими большими, что вы не могли носить их с собой. Поэтому вы могли работать только там, где была необходимая техника, и вы могли забыть о работе, как только уходили домой.
Сейчас всё по-другому. Сегодня работа и личная жизнь так связаны между собой, что трудно понять, где заканчивается одно и начинается другое. Например, ваш босс может позвонить вам, когда вы находитесь в кино или сидите с друзьями в ресторане, и вам придётся решать рабочие проблемы вместо того, чтобы получать удовольствие от вечера.

Topic area: The developing world
Демографический рост в развивающихся странах – проблема не только для России
Одна из самых серьёзных проблем в мире – это демографический взрыв, который произошёл во второй половине двадцатого века. Учёные считают, что он был вызван такими факторами, как подъём экономики, отсутствие социального обеспечения стариков и низкий уровень образования в развивающихся странах.
Если в стране нет системы пенсионного обеспечения, то помогать старым родителям должны их сыновья (девочки часто выходят замуж и уходят в семью мужа). Одному сыну будет трудно обеспечить родителей, поэтому в семье должно быть минимум 2-3 сына, а значит, семье надо родить как можно больше детей! После Второй мировой войны медицинское обслуживание улучшилось, упала смертность, и численность населения стала быстро расти. Менее развитые страны сейчас дают 95% прироста населения мира.
Такое быстрое увеличение населения вызывает большие проблемы. Развивающиеся страны не всегда могут обеспечить своё население работой, едой, образованием и медициной. Это создаёт этнические проблемы и вызывает миграцию.
В результате, демографическая проблема становится не только российской, а глобальной, но как мы можем её решить?

Война с терроризмом и демократия
Двадцатый век принёс человечеству две самые страшные войны в истории, которые известны как Мировые. Почти всю вторую половину того века люди жили в страхе ядерного уничтожения из-за Холодной войны между СССР и Америкой. Казалось бы, после распада СССР победила демократия и наступил мир. Но в 2001 году, после террористического акта в США, возникла новая глобальная угроза – терроризм. В русском языке появился термин «война с терроризмом».
Террористы хотят напугать людей, поэтому они выбирают самые эффектные террористические акты, о которых будут говорить СМИ всего мира. Интересно, что шансов стать жертвой терроризма у нас гораздо меньше, чем попасть в автомобильную аварию, но информация о террористических актах вызывает у людей страх.
Может быть, надо запретить СМИ сообщать о терроризме, и людям будет спокойнее? Но как тогда быть с демократическими принципами свободы информации? Многие страны приняли законы, которые разрешают прослушивать телефонные разговоры людей, чтобы облегчить борьбу с терроризмом. Но не ограничивают ли эти законы свободу личности и демократию, против которых борются террористы?

За время существования человечества происходило много научно-технических революций. Из истории мы знаем каменный век, бронзовый век, железный век. Наше время чаще всего называют веком атома, кибернетики и компьютеров.
Одна из особенностей научного прогресса сегодня – это быстрое использование научных открытий в жизни людей. Например, после открытия фотографии прошло 112 лет, прежде чем появился фотоаппарат. Интернет стал использоваться через 15-20 лет после его изобретения, а смартфоны мгновенно стали частью повседневной жизни. Теперь мы можем достаточно точно спрогнозировать, какая техника появится в нашей жизни через 5-10-20 лет.
Совсем скоро мы увидим на улицах российских городов автомобили, которыми будет управлять компьютер. Наши интернет-покупки будут доставлять не по почте, а по воздуху роботы-дроны, а некоторые счастливчики будут рассказывать своим друзьям о замечательных каникулах, которые они провели... в космосе!
Звучит фантастически, но может быть нам надо задуматься о том, как это изменит нашу жизнь? Нет ли здесь опасностей, к которым надо быть готовыми?
