4 Reading about healthy living 9 marks

Read this carefully. Answer the questions below.

Eating too much food makes you fat and this is very badfor your heart. There are two things to do – eat healthilyand take lots of exercise.

Eat food with plenty of proteins and vitamins. Fish andmeat have a lot of protein in them. Fruit and vegetableshave lots of vitamins. You need to eat some fat but don’teat too much because it’s not good for your heart. Alsodrink lots of water or fruit juice. Don’t drink too manycans of cola as it’s bad for your teeth!

Do some anaerobic exercise every day. Youcould go swimming or running, or even dosome fast walking. The important thing is tokeep moving until you breathe quickly andyour heart beats fast. The heart is a bigmuscle, so when it works hard it getsstronger. This improves your bloodcirculation and gets more oxygen to allparts of your body.

Finally, if you want to be fit, don’t startsmoking. Smoking is bad for your lungs, foryour heart and for your circulation.

1 .Write three things that you need in a healthy diet.

  • 13Speaking task Theme A

    AASpeaking taskInstructions to the teacher

    Using the Speaking task

Work with two or three students. They should sit close enough to discuss things but farenough apart to read the stimulus sheet independently.

Give each student a copy of the stimulus sheet.Explain that the list gives some thingsthat can make life good. Ask them to read the list and to choose the three things thatthey think are the most important. After a minute or two, tell them to take it in turns todiscuss what they have chosen and why. Ask one student to start.

If one or more of the students can’t keep the exercise going, join in to encourage eachstudent to produce some spoken English. For example,‘Why are good friends importantto you,Maria?’

When the students have all had a chance to say what they have chosen and to offer someexplanation, move to the second stage of the interview. Ask them, in turn,‘What thingsmight stop you having a good life?’After they have made one or two suggestions each, draw the task to a close.

    Marking the Speaking task

During the interview, make two independent judgements about the speaking ability ofeach student. The first is about communication: can the student describe objects andactivities in a way that a very sympathetic native speaker would understand? The secondis about the quality of the language used:does the student use appropriate vocabulary andgrammar when describing situations?

For each judgement, a score of 0–5 is awarded giving a total score of 0–10.Banddescriptors are provided below to clarify the marking system.

    Communication

4 or 5 Can state choices clearly. Can give supporting

    explanations.No teacher help is required.Grammar

may not be correct, e.g.‘Many friends is good for help

    me.’May paraphrase for unknown words.

2 or 3 Can state choices clearly.May need prompting/help to

    explain why.

1 Indicates choices but unable to communicate

reasoning.Statements may be limited, e.g.‘Lots of

    money is good.’Generally needs help.

0 Cannot say what he/she thinks without significant

    prompting/help.

    Language content

4 or 5 Descriptions are generally expressed using acceptable

    grammar/structures, e.g.‘Sport keeps you fit.Eating

fruit is good for the body.’

2 or 3 Vocabulary is adequate for the task.Explanations need

some effort on the part of the listener.

1 Uses basic vocabulary successfully for simple statements

only.Significant evidence of missing vocabulary and

    grammar.

0 Vocabulary clearly inadequate for the task.
