1 Seasonal Roundup

Don's presentation was supported with the weekly rainfall maps at the end of this report as

well as the sowing dates table and the Site Visits table.

Sowing dates of 2013 NVT trials in the north of NSW

The autumn rainfall break did not arrive until mid May, delaying seeding by several weeks.

The exception to this was the band of rain that went through the north of NSW, just below

the Qld border. This allowed many of the faba bean trials and some early wheat trials to get

sown.

Other trials were sown dry on the promise of rain. However, most of the trial sites began

sown at or just after the rains on May 14. Of course, once it started raining, it continued and

wet paddocks delayed some sites from being sown.

2 Commercial varieties in NVT

The varieties received by Graincorp for the

Newcastle port zone has been provided to allow

review of the important varieties to remain in

NVT trials.

Following discussions, the recommendations

were to:

retain Ellison wheat

retain Urambie barley

The number of entries in the NVT trials in

northern NSW do not exceed contracted

numbers so there is no undue pressure to

remove varieties.

The "newly" released varieties that have reached

five years from release and are questioned as to their retention in NVT trials are not included

in northern trials. eg Axe, Barham, Espada, Mace.

3 The new cluster analysis

The new Factor Analytic analysis method (informerly referred to as cluster analysis) is

closer to being developed and will be implemented for the 2013 long term, across site

analyses.

Based upon developments to date, there has been an App produced that will allow the

results of the analysis to be interrogated and refined to specific locations of interest.

The folllowing screen views of the App show what sort of results can be obtained. The views

can be based upon state, region, location or groups of locations. However, there are no

borders when groups of trials are selected (Dynamic region).

4 an NVT review

GRDC requested an informal review of the NVT Advisory Committees to provide feedback

for the next round of NVT starting in the 2015 season.

A series of statements were posed and responses were recorded and voted upon by the

attendees. The responses are recorded and "relative importance" indicated by the voles

provided. A "sticker" indicated its importance and a number on the sticker indicated whether

it was being achieved (5) or not being achieved (1).

There was some discussion around the future involvement of DPI NSW in the NVT program but nothing could be resolved as any decision would come from senior management in due course. Appendix 1. Weekly rainfall in 2013.
