PTO Says “Thanks” to Christmas season donors!

hanks! “The PTO would like to thank those that assisted us with our annual food and toy drive. We were blown away at the outpouring of Christmas gifts donated for the children of our community.

Because of your thoughtfulness, we were able to provide 12 children with an amazing Christmas filled with incredible gifts! We would also like to thank Ed Reagan for the use of the Lighthouse Church, and give a very special thank you to Lisa Mowdy who gave so much of her time to help us box up and prepare our Christmas dinners and gifts for the families of this community. What an amazing little town we live in! Thank you again!” ❦ – Camas County PTO

Wind slab in the Soldier foothills! Photo: Jeff Ralph

Complex conditions in the hills! Be avalanche wary! The Sawtooth Avalanche Center calls conditions today in the Soldier Mountains “Moderate”, but notes that riders and skiers can expect wind slabs in local areas such the slope in the photo above, taken looking west from Soldier Road. “Today, expect snowfall and wind to create additional thin, fresh slabs in exposed terrain. These should be small and more of a nuisance before sunset, but heavier than expected snowfall or stronger winds than forecasted could increase the hazard. Evaluate each slope you plan to ski or ride and expect conditions to change both over short distances and as the day goes on. If you’re out after dark, heavier snowfall will create thicker, more widespread slabs and an increasing chance of natural avalanches.” ❦

“Living in the Modern Rural West” book talk! Monday in the library! When the days are short, dig in with a book! One of the brighter features of this winter has been the Library’s book and discussion series on notable books about the New West! Monday at 6 p.m. brings us the third of the series, a discussion about Reservation Blues, a stunning novel by Sherman Alexie. ISU scholar Dan Hunt will be present to stimulate discussion and referee arguments! Reservation Blues, a story of a Native American rock and roll band magically furnished with bluesman Robert Johnson’s enchanted guitar, is a dazzler: funny, heartbreaking, and narratively liberated – a fresh New World masterpiece that reminds me why I liked 100 Years of Solitude! ❦

They’re raising funds by selling raffle tickets at home games (the prize is a signed copy of Dyrk Godby’s Master of the Breed), and are holding the Spaghetti Dinner in the cafeteria before next Thursday’s home game! Dine in style! And check the family rate! ❦
