2016 Gala Auction
T he First Annual Camano Island Commu-nity Trunk Sale was a roaring success!
Nearly 70 vendors brought everything you could imagine to their rented parking spaces at the Camano Center parking lot: boat floats to baby clothes, microwaves to movies, antiques to art, tools to toys. Shoppers treasure hunted to their hearts content, resting between prowl-ings with a cup of coffee and a homemade cookie, dining on brats & hot dogs, or relaxing for a cool one in the beer garden.
Joan Phillips was elated. “This was such a good idea. I sold lots of stuff I didn’t need, made some money, and found some great stuff to buy. But the best part was how much fun I had meeting and talking with people, and just
enjoying the day. I can’t wait for the next one. When are you doing this again?” This was the resounding cry from vendors and shoppers alike. Stay tuned. We’re working on a date for the next one and we’ll keep you posted.
The Trunk Sale raised money for the Building Expansion Fund for the 2nd Chance Thrift Shop. $2273 was raised from vendor rental fees, do-nations, and proceeds from the sale of food and refreshments. The event was put on by a com-mitted team of volunteers, along with the staff members from 2nd Chance Thrift Shop and The Camano Center.
Many, many thanks to all the vendors, shoppers and to our amazing 2nd Chance Thrift Shop vol-unteers who worked so hard to help make this event a huge success: Allie Beebe, Sheryl Pel-
land, Jan Treml, Bob and LaRees Hess, Marilyn Crandall, Linda Beuhring, Teresa Verd, and Lorena Young.

W hen I think of August, I think
of our car show, jazz summer dinner concert and of course, Gala Auc-tion tickets. This is the 25th Anniversary of the Collector Car Show and Outdoor Market. I be-lieve it is the oldest car
show in our community. When I first moved to Camano Island over 24 years ago, I remember attending the show at the old blue building where the cars were on the grass field and the front parking lot was covered with tables of car parts for sale. 25 years later, the car show is still a fun family event. Great BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches from Walt and Marilyn Grosjean will be available as well as the popular beer
garden. Come join us on Saturday, August 13th, from 10 to 3 for the best little car show on Camano Island. \
Wednesday, August 17 is our Jazz Summer Dinner Concert featuring a BBQ dinner with the all the fixings cooked by our good friend Randy Heagle with Adin Collver. Come enjoy the sweet voice of Adriana Giordano with mu-sic by Entre Mundo Quarteto.
August is also the month when our Gala Auc-tion tickets go on sale. This year’s Gala Auc-tion on Saturday, September 24 marks our 10th Anniversary. Our fun theme this year is Ha-vana Nights. Tickets are $75 and included an amazing seated dinner with appetizers by our Hospitality and Catering Director, Adin Coll-ver, plus beverages. Our Camano treasure, Jack Archibald will be back as our Master of Ceremonies as well as Ian Lindsay our fabu-
lous auctioneer. Tickets sold out last year, so be sure to get your tickets early for this not to be missed event.
The 2nd Chance Thrift Shop Expansion Fund is doing really well. We are hoping to announce another matching donation this month. Thank you to all of you who have supported this en-deavor. This new building is critical in order to provide a more secure funding source for the Camano Center. We really appreciate every-one stepping up and showing your support for the work that we do here at the Center.
Enjoy this beautiful month.

S ummer’s finally here, and we’re going to make the most of what’s left of it! August
trips feature three of your favorites according to member’s suggestions: Museums (S.A.M.), Day Cruises (“Chuckanut Cracked Crab Din-ner Cruise”), and Fairs/Festivals (Evergreen State Fair). And before we know it, Fall is just around the corner! With school starting in September, memories of childhood surface for most of us. MOHAI’s exhibit, “Toys of the ‘50s ‘60s and ‘70s” is the perfect way to relive some of the better ones. If you’d like to really take a trip back in time, join us for something far different, as we explore a medieval village a bit later in the month. Many of you will agree that it’s about time for another shopping trip, but this time it’s up to you to decide where. Be sure to call in your “vote” by Sep-tember 8th, and remember, on this one, major-ity rules!
October is going to bring with it a couple of long-awaited, oft-suggested trips. To help us really get into the spirit of the season, we’ll spend a day of family fun at two nearby ven-ues sure to be a treat for all ages. The day will start with a Kangaroo & Exotic Animal Tour at Outback Kangaroo Farm near Arlington. From there, we’ll go to Foster Produce, Corn Maze, and Pumpkin Patch for some yummy autumn food (or bring your own picnic lunch), and lots of autumnal activities. It may have been a long time coming, but we’re finally go-ing to schedule that “Corner of Bitter & Sweet” tour you’ve been waiting for. Neither has a date set yet, so keep an eye out for that (check our facebook page, the Camano Center website camanocenter.org, the bulletin board in the lobby, and the trip flyers available near the front door for updates.
A word to the wise: Please be sure that you have signed up BY THE POSTED DEAD-LINE for trips, especially those involving tick-ets that must be purchased ahead of time. We will no longer be accepting sign-ups after that date when tickets are involved, due to diffi-culty in getting additional tickets after pur-chasing a block of seats. Our recent trip to the AARP Mariner’s game in July is a good example of what can happen when folks sign up late – many seats were not together, and we were barely able to negotiate the last two, signed up well after the posted “Sign Up By” date.

ing and drinking (VSED), and Death with Dignity.
Take part in a practical, hand-on class prepar-ing your end-of-life documents. Leave with a completed advance directive.
You will be guided through the process of documenting your wishes about the kind of medical care you do or do not want at the end of life.
You will have the opportunity to work with the
End of Life Washington Advance Directive, which combines a living will and durable power of attorney for health care into one document.
There is no cost for the seminar, documents or notarization.
Karen Griffith and Judy McCay are sisters and volunteers with end of Life Washington. They train volunteers to sit vigil at the beside of dy-ing patients.
Karen currently serves on the board of the Hospice Foundation for Jefferson Healthcare in Port Townsend. As she gets older, Karen , Karen says the more real and less theoretical end-of-life choices have become. She has a passion to educate people on what those choices are and has helped many clients walk that final journey.
When her husband was in hospice and ex-
pressed his wish to take advantage of the Death with Dignity Act, Judy became acquainted with End of Life WA. Judy strongly believes every adult should be prepared for future medi-cal situations by having completed an advance directive and have an understanding of their options when faced with the end of their life.

A s loudly as the hammock calls in summer, we still need to tend our lawn and gardens. Follow these tips to cut back on your time
spent watering.
Let your lawn go dormant. To keep it healthy and ensure that it resumes growing in the fall, water deeply just once a month in the summer (early morning or evening) when we don’t have rain.
Encourage plant roots to grow as deeply as they can. Water deeply and infrequently where you have deep soils. For shallow soils, water slowly in short sessions repeated over the day to prevent runoff. (An hour after watering, gently dig in to see if you watered deeply enough; lawns 4-6”deep, annuals and veggies 1-2” deep, trees/shrubs/perennials 6-12” deep.)
Use mulch on your planting beds; straw around garden veggies, coarse wood-chip mulch in flower and shrub beds.
Repair leaky hoses, pipes, or irrigation systems.
Adjust your sprinklers to eliminate the fine mists that evaporate or blow away.
And for next year, consider adding a few rain barrels or a rainwater cis-tern to capture and use roof water – which also saves you money if you pay for your water. Call the Snohomish Conservation District at 425-335-5634 to find out if you are eligible for financial assistance for a cis-tern.
Learn more tips to conserve water outdoors in the booklet “Natural Yard Care”, available on our conservation district education website at http://www.betterground.org/natural-yard-care/.

T hank You to Mitch Michl, Associate Pastor at Camano
Chapel and the multitude of chapel volunteers that came out on June 26 to the Camano Cen-ter. This large group weeded the grounds, repainted the striping in the parking lot, trimmed weeds
around the parking area, and did some touch up painting. Thank you so much for your volunteer time to the Camano Center. What a difference it made!!!

The Camano Center is hosting our third Jazz Dinner Concert, August 17th at 5:30 p.m. The evening will start with opening entertainment by pianist Ron Manz followed by Chris Tuohy with a BBQ dinner being served at 6:00 pm. Adriana Giordano & EntreMundos Quar-teto will begin at 7:00 pm.
EntreMundos Quarteto is an elec-trifying Seattle-based band who bring to the stage an uplifting and kinetic mix of deep Brazilian roots flavored with world rhythms—a deft blending of funk, jazz and soul melding with the classic sounds of samba and bossa nova. EntreMundos means “between worlds,” and the group’s mélange of seductive sounds embodies their name, stirring a personal and un-common blend into a sound with universal appeal.
With the elegant and lilting vocals of Adriana Giordano, the superbly
versatile Eric Verlinde on piano, and the locked-in rhythm section of Jeff Busch on drums and per-cussion and Dean Schmidt on bass, EntreMundos Quarteto deliver the goods: Seductive, sparkling and substantial, light as a feather but with a deep, earthy groove, and guaranteed to move the hips and lift the soul!
EntreMundos Quarteto has per-formed at the Columbia City Thea-ter, The Triple Door and The Royal Room in Seattle, Chateau Ste. Michelle in Woodinville and the BAAY Theater in Bellingham.
Tickets are available now at the Camano Center at 606 Arrowhead Road or call 360-387-0222 to pur-chase tickets over the phone. Event seating is limited so call early to get your tickets. Tables can be re-served for a party of eight.
