WelcomeIt’s been a busy few months here at Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay… but isn’t it always?! We have officially released the homes in Stage 8 of our development, meaning there are now even more opportunities for you to secure a slice of Caloundra Cay paradise – but move swiftly, as it’s a case of first in, best dressed. If you’re looking to fast track your move into over-50s resort-style living, did you know that we have a selection of two-storey homes ready and waiting for you to move in to? We believe that downsizing shouldn’t mean downgrading, which is why each of our two-storey home designs feature plenty of bedrooms, two separate indoor living areas, a lift, an alfresco outdoor living space and a two-car garage – not to mention a sprawling kitchen and dining area for entertaining. We have many people who say they only want a single-level home. But once they tour our two-storey Palmira, Antigua, Florencia and (now sold-out) Marquis designs, they quickly change their minds. It really is love at first sight! Check out our Antigua on Pages 4-5 and you’ll soon see why.

I’m so excited about the free premium golf cars that we are currently giving away to all of our new home buyers – and I know our new homeowners feel the same way! To learn more about this amazing offer, which ends on June 30, 2021, please head to Page 7.

I know that, for some of us, the decision to retire can be a difficult one – even when you know how great your life will be on the other side! In parting, I would like to leave you with a quote that I always come back to…“The best time to start thinking about your retirement is before the boss does.” – Author unknown.

We look forward to seeing you around our resort very soon!

GRANT’S PRO TIPS

“If you take a look at all the best golfers, one of the most common things you’ll notice is that they start their golf swings from a very balanced athletic position,” says Grant. Grant likes to look at the set-up position from the ground up. Looking from a front-on position, starting from the feet, you’ll notice the stance is roughly shoulder width apart and that both feet are slightly flared out. This allows your knees and hips to be positioned properly, which will help you move correctly throughout the swing. Next, you will notice there is slightly more pressure towards the front leg in the lower half – roughly 55 per cent for the left leg and 45 per cent for the right leg. This is to help balance out the top half of your body, which will be slightly angled away from the target. This also allows your hands to be placed on the club in the correct position. Now let’s

take a look from a ‘down the line’ view. Starting from the knee flex, we can see an unlocking or slight flex of the knees.

“One of the things I see a lot is either far too much flex or almost straight legs at address,” says Grant. Next, we should see a tilt forward from the pelvis with the upper body – from here, you can see how the arms can hang nice and relaxed. Grant sees a lot of players who have their arms far too straight, causing too much tension in the arms at address.

“One of the keys I look for is great balance, and I look at three points in the body to check this,” says Grant. “Imagine a straight line down from under your armpit, past the front of the knees and into the laces of your shoes. When I see this, I know that a player has great balance and is ready to go.”

As far as over-50s’ sports go, golf is great. There’s all that walking in the fresh air and sunshine to keep bodies active and healthy. There’s the social aspect to keep our mental wellbeing on track. The only downfall is that pesky little white ball…

Across the Palm Lake Group, our resorts offer residents many ways to play and perfect their golf game because we know how much golf means to many of them. Depending on which Palm Lake Resort you call home, you might enjoy an actual on-site resort course, a golf simulator room (with world-class technology taking participants to the best international courses from the comfort of their own resort), chip-and-putt greens or even mini golf for the whole family to enjoy. The greater Palm Lake Group also owns and operates Pelican Waters Golf Club – a Greg Norman-designed course that has been rated the best public-access course on the Sunshine Coast. In fact, this stellar course is hosting Golf Australia’s premier Queensland Open from March 11-14 (and on top of all that, did you know Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay residents can play Pelican Waters Golf Course for free? T&Cs apply).

While golf has proven to be a favourite pastime for many a Palm Lake Resort resident, perfecting your technique can be a long game. Lucky we can call on the expertise of world-class golf coach and head of coaching at Pelican Waters Golf Club, Grant Field. Grant has been “golf obsessed” since age 12, when he took up the sport as a bonding activity with his father. After deciding to train as a professional player at 17, Grant soon realised that his

passion lay in helping others improve their game, rather than improving his own.

“I found myself doing a lot of coaching and discovered that I loved helping people so, when I was around 20, I finished my coaching apprenticeship and focused on that full-time,” says Grant.

Since then, Grant has coached at a number of golf clubs on the Sunshine Coast, and even co-founded a golf academy at Twin Waters. He spent years coaching the Queensland junior team in a full-time role with Golf Queensland and, as if all of that hasn’t kept him busy enough, travels the world coaching professional players on their tours. That was, of course, until COVID hit. Now, Grant is enjoying his full-time role coaching members and guests (including Palm Lake Resort residents) at Pelican Waters Golf Club, and continues coaching the pros too.

“My passion is to help people better their technique and fall in love with the game even more, no matter their skill level,” says Grant. “There are so many great aspects to this sport – mental and physical health, the social benefits and community aspects – so I’m really passionate about improving the golf offering, especially for Palm Lake Resort residents.”

WEEKLY ACTIVITIES

From working in production for the Queensland Ballet to co-directing the cinema program for his fellow residents, Doug Weis has found a way to continue his lifelong passion for theatre since moving to Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay.

THE SHOW GOES ON

Doug Weis has loved the theatre for as long as he can remember. While his “official” job for much of his life was with the Queensland Government, he spent countless hours, in the audience, backstage and in the sound booth, captivated by the sights and sounds of live performance.

“I’ve always had an interest in theatre and the movies, so it was only a matter of time before I pursued that sort of thing more seriously – first for leisure, and then eventually for work,” says Doug.

And his early days volunteering at a theatre in Brisbane did more for Doug than simply satisfy his interest – it was there that he met his (now) wife, Noela, a ballet dancer. “I was working for the Queensland Government full-time, and spending my spare time helping out at the theatre,” says Doug. “When I met Noela and she decided to set up her own ballet school, that’s when I became even more entrenched in production.”

Doug taught himself everything he knows during his 50-odd years on the job, both in production and his later

work in the audio/visual side of things. Despite no formal training, he landed a job with the Queensland Ballet, which he held for 15 years until retiring.

“Even after I retired, I kept going back because I loved it so much,” Doug says. “We moved in here almost as soon as I finished up with the Queensland Ballet, so I feel like I’ve picked up where I left off in a sense.”

Since moving to Palm Lake Resort, Doug has been instrumental in the forming of the Caloundra Cay Movie Collective – a group of five residents who are tasked with coordinating the resort’s movie program each week.

“We work independently from one another, each selecting our own movies, and our varied tastes mean that we cover a lot of ground between us,” says Doug. “Where one member prefers to show musical performances and concerts, another enjoys putting on blockbusters.” And every so often, when a resident approaches one of the members of the Movie Collective with a film suggestion, the group runs a ‘Residents’ Choice’ night at the cinema.

8 9

“Overall, the feedback is really good because the residents appreciate the work that goes into it,” says Doug. “Choosing a movie is a very personal thing, but we still have our regulars who come every Wednesday and Sunday night no matter what we put on.” On special days like Christmas or ANZAC Day, Doug puts together a program that commemorates the occasion – there might be Carols by Candlelight showing on Christmas Eve, or a dawn service for Anzac Day.

“We’ve got a very good set up here, with a beautiful cinema and proper equipment, so I like to use the space for as many things as we can,” says Doug. “The facilities here were the main reason Noela and I first fell in love with Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay, after all.”

Before moving in almost two years ago, Doug says that he and Noela were eager to find out what “these over-50s lifestyle resorts were all about”. Living in Brisbane at the time, they took a tour of Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay and – even before construction had begun on the amenities – they knew it would be a great fit.

“The bowling club drew our attention immediately, and it was actually when we came to the opening for the bowling club that I found out about the 65-seat movie theatre,” says Doug. “That’s when I realised that this was the place for me.”

AROUND THE GROUNDSWow! Our Dinner Dance Delight event was a memorable party filled with great food, great fun (on the dance floor!) and great friends.

With Easter and a number of long weekends fast approaching, our Social Committee has put together an exciting schedule of events for all of our residents to enjoy. We have a number of pool parties, a St Patrick’s Day celebration, a few dinner dances and even trivia and karaoke nights to look forward to. It’s shaping up to be a very fun few weeks indeed!

On the last Friday night of each month, the bowling committee puts on a ‘scroungers and BBQ’ night, which sees them cooking up a storm and enjoying great food and even better company – followed up with a game of lawn bowls, of course! Our amazing bar committee and their volunteer bar staff are always on hand during our event to ensure your glass is always full of your favourite cold one.

One of our residents, Doug – who is part of our Movie Collective and was featured on Page 8 of this edition – has put together a very special programme for Anzac Day. Last year, his tribute to the Anzacs was so moving I don’t think there was a dry eye in the movie cinema. It is thanks to the efforts of residents like Doug who make Palm

FROM THE CARETAKERSLake Resort Caloundra Cay such a wonderful community to be part of.

Take a walk around the resort and you’ll find that our beautiful surrounds are pretty wonderful, too – next time you stroll through our wetland area, have a close look in the water to see how our fingerlings (baby fish) have grown. We hope to have our first ‘tag and release’ fishing tournament by Easter next year!

As of February 28, 2021, we have 146 homes occupied with 263 residents. Our current statistics are 46 per cent males and 54 per cent females, with 82 per cent double and 18 per cent single households. It is always so interesting to know who our Palm Lake Resort Caloundra Cay community is made up of!

Looking ahead, we hope you enjoy your Easter holidays whether they are spent enjoying the company of family, friends or simply feasting on some delicious food.
