WELCOME TO CALVARY “The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God!”
Thank you for worshipping with us today. You are always welcome at Calvary!
The Fifth Sunday After Pentecost - July 09, 2017 God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.
The mystery of God’s ways is sometimes hidden from the wise and intelligent. Jesus associates with the lowly and outcast. Like Paul, we struggle with our own selfish desires and seek God’s mercy and forgiveness.
We gather to be refreshed by Christ’s invitation: “Come to me, all you that are weary.” Gathered around word, water, and meal, we find rest for our souls.
Commemorations for this week…
Benedict of Nursia, Abbot of Monte Cassino, died around 540
Tuesday, July 11, 2017
Benedict is known as the father of the Western monastic movement. Educated in Rome, he went to live as a hermit,
and eventually gathered a community of monks around him. He wrote a rule for living in monasteries that is used by
Benedictines and adapted by others.
Nathan Söderblom, Bishop of Uppsala, died 1931
Wednesday, July 12, 2017
A winner of the Nobel Prize for peace for his efforts to unite peoples after the First World War, Söderblom also
called attention to the revival of early church worship principles, and helped to lay the groundwork for the World
Council of Churches. The Sanctuary is a place of reverence and worship to honor our Lord. Please...do not bring beverages or food into the Sanctuary, however you may have these items in the other areas of the church. 2017 Flower and Bulletin Sponsor Lists are on the bulletin board in the 1st floor hallway. Please sign up today before your “special” dates are no longer available! There is still time to register for Camp and the Church will pick up one half of the cost It is such a great experience for the kids and very generous of the Church to help with the cost. Don’t miss out on this amazing experience! Contact Don Dusich for details. Social ministry will be collecting school supplies for New Hope until August 6. New Hope is in the greatest need of new backpacks, but also are accepting any school items. Please place your contribution in the box in the Narthex.

Greeting, Announcements & Sharing of Joys & Concerns … Pastor
Prelude … “It Is Well With My Soul” … Arr. By Cindy Berry
*Confession and Forgiveness… Pastor and Congregation Let us confess our sins in the presence of God. Most merciful God,
Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in
steadfast love. Amen.
Trusting God’s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one
another. Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being.
Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses,
and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us
near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God’s
love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy
of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God
☩ forgives you all your sins. Amen.

Special Music … “Festival Prelude On Thaxted” (for trumpet & organ) … by Holst-from The Planets,,, Richard Tilley, Trumpet
First Reading … Lay Reader with Congregational Response
Zechariah 9:9-12
A reading from Zechariah.
The coming messianic king will inaugurate an era of disarmament and prosperity.
Because of God’s covenant with Israel, they are designated as “prisoners of hope.”
9Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes
to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a
donkey.
10He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war-horse from Jerusalem; and the battle
bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from
sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free
from the waterless pit.
12Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you
double.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Psalm … Lay Reader with Congregational Responses … Psalm 89:1-4, 15-18

Second Reading … Lay Reader with Congregational Response Romans 7:15-25a
A reading from Romans.
Life enslaved under sin is a catch-22 existence in which we know good but do not do it and do things
we know to be bad. Through Jesus Christ, God has set us free from such a futile existence.
12Do not let sin exercise dominion in your mortal bodies, to make you obey their passions. 13No longer
present your members to sin as instruments of wickedness, but present yourselves to God as those who
have been brought from death to life, and present your members to God as instruments of righteousness. 14For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
15What then? Should we sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! 16Do you
not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom
you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks
be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of
teaching to which you were entrusted, 18and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves
of righteousness. 19I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you
once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present
your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.
20When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21So what advantage did you
then get from the things of which you now are ashamed? The end of those things is death. 22But now that
you have been freed from sin and enslaved to God, the advantage you get is sanctification. The end is
eternal life. 23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
*Gospel Acclamation … “Alleluia. Lord to whom shall we go? … ELW Page 151
*The Gospel … Pastor with Congregational Response Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30
The holy gospel according to St. Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus chides people who find fault with both his ministry and that of John the Baptist. He thanks God
that wisdom and intelligence are not needed to receive what God has to offer.
[Jesus spoke to the crowd saying:] 16“To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in
the marketplaces and calling to one another, 17‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we
wailed, and you did not mourn.’18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a
demon’; 19the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a
friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
25At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden
these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; 26yes, Father, for such
was your gracious will. 27All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the
Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son choos-
es to reveal him.
10
28“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29Take
my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for
your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Children’s Message… Pastor After the Children’s Message, if someone has signed up lead the program,
Children are invited to participate in “Children's Church”. Children will return to their families in time to commune with them.

*The Prayers … Worship Assistant, Congregation Responses, Pastor
Called together in the Spirit’s embrace, let us pray for the mending of God’s world.
Humble God, lead your church in the way of service. Prosper the work of campus ministries
and Young Adults in Global Mission as they raise up leaders to serve the world.
Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer. Cultivating God, bless and encourage all who work the land to feed your people. Give them joy
in their vocation. Shower rain on crops and health on livestock. Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer. Holy One, you command peace to the nations. Give peaceful hearts and discerning minds to
world leaders and citizens alike, that all who suffer violence and hunger come to know
the fullness of life. Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer. Gracious God, you bid the weary come to you for rest. Renew energy for bone-tired people.
Support our brothers and sisters who are burdened by grief, loneliness, and illness
(especially). Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer. God of everything, you have compassion for all that you have made. Show our congregation
what mercy looks like in our own community, that we become faithful partners in your
ministry. Lord, in your mercy,
hear our prayer. God of life, we give you thanks and praise for all the people who have blessed our lives, for
saints among us whose steadfast faith has strengthened ours (especially).
11
Lord, in your mercy,

*Confession and Absolution … Pastor with Congregation
Leader: Let us confess to God and before one another our sins, and especially our willing-
ness to stay chained to our sins.
People: We confess to you, O God, and before one another that we have sinned. We
have done those things we ought not to have done, and we have left undone those things
we ought to have done. We know this and yet our behavior seldom changes, or when it
does not for very long. We are ashamed to admit our failures to anyone else, and often
we are ashamed to admit them even to ourselves. We decide that what we are doing is-
n’t really that bad. At least it is not as bad as others are doing. And we really do things
that are worthwhile, and that offsets the bad, right? But you know us, O God, and
know what we could become if we allowed your grace to wash over us and renew us. So
here we are. Wash us in your grace and renew us in mind and Spirit. Break our addic-
tion to our sin. Amen.
Leader: God knows our frame and how easily we become addicted to what we know is
harmful to us. Receive God’s love and grace, and be filled with God’s life-giving, life-
renewing Spirit.

16Do you not
know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you
obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? 17But thanks be
to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of
teaching to which you were entrusted, 18and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves
of righteousness. 19I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once
presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your
members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.
23For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

*The Gospel … Pastor with Congregational Response Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30
The holy gospel according to St. Matthew.
Glory to you, O Lord. Jesus chides people who find fault with both his ministry and that of John the Baptist. He thanks God
17
that wisdom and intelligence are not needed to receive what God has to offer.
27All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the
Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses
to reveal him.
28“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29Take
my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your
souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
The gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.

*The Apostles Creed… In Unison
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried; he descended to the dead. on the third day he rose again; he ascended into
heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the
forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

“One Thing Remains” … Riddle, Black, Johnson
Higher than the mountains that I face,
Stronger than the power of the grave,
Constant through the trial and the change,
One thing remains.
One thing remains.
Your love never fails, it never gives up.
It never runs out on me.
Your love never fails, it never gives up.
It never runs out on me.
Your love never fails, it never gives up.
It never runs out on me.
Your love,— your love.
On and on and on and on it goes.
It overwhelms and satisfies my soul,
And I never ever have to be afraid.
One thing remains.
One thing remains.
Your love never fails, it never gives up.
It never runs out on me.
Your love never fails, it never gives up.
It never runs out on me.
Your love never fails, it never gives up.
It never runs out on me.
Your love never fails, it never gives up.
It never runs out on me.
Your love never fails, it never gives up.
It never runs out on me.
Your love,— your love.
Your love never fails, it never gives up.
